Introduction: Pharmacological and other treatments for binge eating disorder (BED) predate its inclusion as the third main eating disorder in the 2013 DSM-5. Currently, second in line to psychological therapy are psychotropics such as antidepressants, anticonvulsants and stimulants.
Areas Covered: This review summarizes the evidence and emerging evidence on the pharmacotherapies for BED and their potential for wider use.
We have synthesized and characterized a novel series of ruthenium complexes with formulas [RuCl(N-S)(dppm)]PF (Ru1), [Ru(N-S)(dppm)]PF (Ru2), [Ru(N-S)(dppe)]PF (Ru3), [Ru(N-S)(dppen)]PF (Ru4), [Ru(N-S)(bpy)]PF (Ru5). In these formulas, N-S or S represents H2mq (2-mercapto-4(3)-quinazoline); dppe (1,2'-bis(diphenylphosphine)ethane), dppm (1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphine)methane), or dppen (1,2'-bis(diphenylphosphine)ethene); and bpy refers to 2,2'-bipyridine. We have also compared the cytotoxicity of cisplatin with these ruthenium complexes to murine melanoma cells (B16-F10), human melanoma cells (A-375), and the non-tumoral human keratinocyte cell line (HaCat).

Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 42 eyes of participants (22 Controls and 20 POAG patients) that underwent optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) to assess VD in the peripapillary region in three examination sets: primary gaze position (1), 25-degree adduction (2) and 25-degree adduction with OPD compression (3). Individual relationships between IOP levels and changes in the superficial complex VD were evaluated after image processing and exclusion of large retinal vessels.
Background: NEK10, a serine/threonine/tyrosine kinase belonging to the NEK (NIMA-related kinases) family, has been associated with diverse cellular processes. However, no specific target pathways have been identified. Our previous work knocking down NEK10 in HeLa cells suggested a functional association with mitochondria, as we observed altered mitochondrial morphology, mitochondrial oxygen consumption, mtDNA integrity, and reactive oxygen species levels.

Oxidative Phosphorylation (OXPHOS) defects can cause severe encephalopathies and no effective treatment exists for these disorders. To assess the ability of gene replacement to prevent disease progression, we subjected two different CNS-deficient mouse models (Ndufs3/complex I or Cox10/complex IV conditional knockouts) to gene therapy. We used retro-orbitally injected AAV-PHP.

Methods: We included 5189 reliable 24-2 and 10-2 VF pairs from 2236 patients, and 28,409 reliable pairs of macular OCT scans and 24-2 VF from 19,527 eyes of 11,560 patients. We developed a transformer-based deep learning model using 52 total deviation values and nine VF test features to predict 68 10-2 total deviation values.
Objectives: To investigate the associations among symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with binge eating spectrum conditions - BESC - [binge eating disorder (BED), bulimia nervosa (BN), and recurrent binge eating (RBE)], and psychiatric and somatic comorbidity and healthcare utilization in a representative sample of a Brazilian city.
Methods: A household survey with 2,297 adults and residents in Rio de Janeiro was conducted. The Adult Self-Rating Scale Screener was used to assess ADHD symptoms.
Antimicrobial resistance has become a global threat to human health, which is coupled with the lack of novel drugs. Metallocompounds have emerged as promising diverse scaffolds for the development of new antibiotics. Herein, we prepared some metal compounds mainly focusing on -[Ru(bpy)(dppz)(SO)(NO)](PF) (PR02, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, dppz = dipyrido[3,2-:2',3'-]phenazine), in which phenazinic and nitric oxide ligands along with sulfite conferred some key properties.

Thus, in this work, we combined Pd(II)/phosphine systems with the natural product curcumin as a ligand, obtaining a series of complexes, [Pd(cur)(PPh)]PF (A1), [Pd(cur)(dppe)]PF (A2), [Pd(cur)(dppp)]PF (A3), [Pd(cur)(dppb)]PF (A4) and [Pd(cur)(dppf)]PF (A5), where dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane, dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane, and dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (P-P), which were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivity analysis, and mass, NMR (H, C, P{H}), UV-vis, and IR spectroscopies, and four of them (A1, A2, A4, and A5) by X-ray crystallography. The cell viability of the complexes A1-A5, cisplatin, and the free ligand curcumin against MDA-MB-231 (human triple-negative breast tumor cells), SK-BR-3 (human breast tumor cells), A549 (human lung tumor cells), MRC-5 (non-tumor human lung cells), A2780 (human ovarian carcinoma cells), and A2780cis (cisplatin-resistant human ovarian carcinoma cells), was evaluated by the MTT colorimetric assay.

With the discovery of specific gene editing enzymes, designed to target pathogenic mitochondrial DNA mutations (often heteroplasmic), the selective removal or modification of mutant variants has become a reality. Because mitochondria cannot efficiently import RNAs, CRISPR has not been the first choice for editing mitochondrial genes.

Aristolochia plants are emblematic from an ethnopharmacological viewpoint and are know to possess numerous biological properties, including antiseptic. However, the medicinal potential of these species is debatable because of their representative chemical constituents, aristolochic acids (AAs) and aristolactams (ALs), which are associated, for instance, with nephropathy and cancer. These contrasting issues have stimulated the development of approaches intended to detoxification of aristoloquiaceous biomasses, among which is included the bioconversion method using larvae of the specialist phytophagous insect Battus polydamas, previously shown to be viable for chemical diversification and to reduce toxicity.

Methods: Thirteen patients with good visual acuity (0.2 logMAR or better) (seven patients with primary open-angle glaucoma 65 ± 13 years) and six controls (51 ± 6 years) yielded a comprehensive ophthalmological examination, including Humphrey Visual Field tests (SITA-Standard 24-2), and performed a monocular, exploratory digital visual search task that quantifies the duration for finding the number "4" on a random array of digits distributed on the screen.
Both POLG and MGME1 are needed for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) maintenance in animal cells. POLG, the primary replicative polymerase of the mitochondria, has an exonuclease activity (3'→5') that corrects for the misincorporation of bases. MGME1 serves as an exonuclease (5'→3'), producing ligatable DNA ends.
