Distinguishing between primary (PID) and secondary (SID) immunodeficiencies, particularly in relation to hematological B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders (B-CLPD), poses a major clinical challenge. We aimed to analyze and define the clinical and laboratory variables in SID patients associated with B-CLPD, identifying overlaps with late-onset PIDs, which could potentially improve diagnostic precision and prognostic assessment. We studied 37 clinical/laboratory variables in 151 SID patients with B-CLPD.

The main constituents of saffron are the apocarotenoids crocins and crocetin, present in the stigmas. Numerous healthy properties, especially those related to the effects on the central nervous system, have been attributed to these compounds but the metabolites responsible for these effects are still unknown. Previous evidences in animal models suggest a role for the gut microbiota in the pharmacokinetics and the neuroprotective effects of these compounds.

Phlorotannins are phenolic compounds exclusive from brown macroalgae endowed with promising bioactive properties. However, considering that diet is their main route of entrance to our system, gastrointestinal digestion might affect such bioactive properties. Here, phlorotannin extracts obtained from Laminaria digitata were submitted to simulated gastrointestinal digestion to evaluate its impact on their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

In Europe, sports food supplements (SSFs) are subject to specific laws and regulations. Up to 70% of athletes are highly influenced by the information on the label or the advertisement of the SSF, which often does not correspond to the scientific evidence, such as health claims. The aim is to analyze such claims relating to sports drinks (SDs) in commercial messages.

Article Synopsis
  • - CAPS is an autoinflammatory condition caused by specific genetic variants (NLRP3) that lead to excessive production of the inflammatory protein IL-1β, resulting in spontaneous inflammatory episodes even without external triggers.
  • - The study reveals that these NLRP3 variants create an always-active inflammasome that causes cell death (pyroptosis) and releases damaging substances like IL-18, while also showing that this process can be controlled by a selective inhibitor (MCC950) and is influenced by cellular signaling pathways (NF-κB).
  • - CAPS variants not only trigger inflammation but also impact metabolic pathways in immune cells, which helps modulate the immune response to balance defense against infections and prevent excessive inflammation linked to IL

Patients with antibody deficiency disorders, such as primary immunodeficiency (PID) or secondary immunodeficiency (SID) to B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder (B-CLPD), are two groups vulnerable to developing the severe or chronic form of coronavirus disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). The data on adaptive immune responses against SARS-CoV-2 are well described in healthy donors, but still limited in patients with antibody deficiency of a different cause. Herein, we analyzed spike-specific IFN-γ and anti-spike IgG antibody responses at 3 to 6 months after exposure to SARS-CoV-2 derived from vaccination and/or infection in two cohorts of immunodeficient patients (PID vs.

Horizontal transfer of transposable elements (TEs) is an important mechanism contributing to genetic diversity and innovation. Bats (order Chiroptera) have repeatedly been shown to experience horizontal transfer of TEs at what appears to be a high rate compared with other mammals. We investigated the occurrence of horizontally transferred (HT) DNA transposons involving bats.

In general, food processing and its conditions affect nutrients, bioactive compounds, and sensory characteristics of food products. This research aims to use a non-targeted metabolomics approach based on UPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS to determine how fruit processing can affect the metabolic profile of fruits and, through a comprehensive metabolic analysis, identify possible markers to assess their degree of processing. The present study uses a real case from the food industry to evaluate markers of the processing of strawberry and apple purees industrially elaborated with different processing techniques and conditions.

Gut microbes have been recognized to convert human bile acids by deconjugation, dehydroxylation, dehydrogenation, and epimerization of the cholesterol core, but the ability to re-conjugate them with amino acids as an additional conversion has been recently described. These new bile acids are known as microbially conjugated bile acids (MCBAs). The aim of this study was to evaluate the MCBAs diversity produced by the gut microbiota through a metabolomics approach.

Introduction: Data analysis during UPLC-MS non-targeted metabolomics introduces variation as different manufacturers use specific algorithms for data treatment and this makes untargeted metabolomics an application for the discovery of new biomarkers with low confidence in the reproducibility of the results under the use of different metabolomics platforms.

Objectives: This study compared the ability of two platforms (Agilent UPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS and Waters UPLC-IMS-QTOF-MS) to identify biomarkers in butterhead and romaine lettuce cultivars.

Methods: Two case studies by different metabolomics platforms: (1) Waters and Agilent datasets processed by the same data pre-processing software (Progenesis QI), and (2) Datasets processed by different data pre-processing software.

The metabolism of phenolic compounds is a key factor in the development of wound-induced enzymatic browning of fresh-cut lettuce. In the present study, the lettuce midribs discriminant metabolites, selected in a previous untargeted metabolomics study, were thoroughly identified. Our results showed that their basal contents correlated with browning developed after 5 days of storage.

Micavibrio aeruginosavorus is an obligate Gram-negative predatory bacterial species that feeds on other Gram-negative bacteria by attaching to the surface of its prey and feeding on the prey's cellular contents. In this study, Serratia marcescens with defined mutations in genes for extracellular cell structural components and secreted factors were used in predation experiments to identify structures that influence predation. No change was measured in the ability of the predator to prey on S.

Enzymatic browning is one of the main causes of quality loss in lettuce as a prepared and ready-to-eat cut salad. An untargeted metabolomics approach using UPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS was performed to explain the wound response of lettuce after cutting and to identify the metabolites responsible of browning. Two cultivars of Romaine lettuce with different browning susceptibilities were studied at short time intervals after cutting.

Organochlorine compounds (OC), namely pentachlorobenzene, hexachlorobenzene, hexachlorocyclohexanes, polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), and DDTs, have been studied in mosses distributed over three altitude gradients of the Andean mountains in Chile at 18 degrees S (3200-4500 m above sea level), 37 degrees S (345-1330 m), and 45 degrees S (10-700 m). The observed concentrations range among the lowestvalues ever reported in remote sites, but they are still higher than those found in previously studied Antarctic areas. The log transformed OC concentrations show a significant linear dependence from reciprocal of temperature independently of the origin of the compounds, e.

The contribution of distinct Ca(2+)-sensitive protein kinases to the regulation of the expression of the synaptosomal-associated protein SNAP-25 was examined in bovine chromaffin cells. Prolonged incubation with high K(+) (38 mM) or 1,1-dimethyl-4-phenyl-piperazinium (DMPP), a nicotinic receptor agonist, significantly increased SNAP-25 protein and mRNA expression, as assessed by immunoblotting and semi-quantitative RT-PCR analysis. Both stimuli preferentially enhanced mRNA coding for the SNAP-25a isoform.
