Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the role of PIEZO2, a mechanotransducer, in bladder function and its possible link to lower urinary tract dysfunction in men with bladder outlet obstruction caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
  • - Researchers analyzed bladder wall samples from men undergoing prostate surgery and found that PIEZO2 expression was lower in those with BPH, especially in patients experiencing urinary retention.
  • - The results suggest that reduced PIEZO2 expression may contribute to bladder dysfunction in BPH patients, indicating a need for further research into its therapeutic potential.

Objective: To investigate the positive association between the presence of simple renal cysts (SRCs) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).

Method: In a retrospective case-control study including subjects aged > 50 years, we evaluated the incidence of SRCs on computed tomography (CT) scan. We compared 91 consecutive patients with AAA referred from the Division of Vascular Surgery and 396 patients without AAA, randomly selected after being matched by age and gender from 3,186 consecutive patients who underwent abdominal CT.

Synthetic suburethral slings have become the most widely used technique for the surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence. Despite its high success rates, significant complications have been reported including bleeding, urethral or bladder injury, urethral or bladder mesh erosion, intestinal perforation, vaginal extrusion of mesh, urinary tract infection, pain, urinary urgency and bladder outlet obstruction. Recent warnings from important regulatory agencies worldwide concerning safety issues of the use of mesh for urogynecological reconstruction have had a strong impact on patients as well as surgeons and manufacturers.

Intrauterine device (IUD) is a common contraceptive method, due to its cost-effectiveness and low complication rates. Uterine perforation is a possible complication and IUD migration to the bladder is a rare and morbid condition. The present report describes an interesting case in which the urinary manifestations started 13 years after insertion, and the main clinical finding was exercise-induced hematuria.

Purpose: To assess the efficacy and safety of intraprostatic injection of two botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT-A) doses for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Materials And Methods: Men with symptomatic BPH who failed medical treatment were randomized to receive 100 U or 200 U of BoNT-A into the prostate. The International Prostatic Symptom Score (IPSS), maximum flow rate (Q(max)), post-void residual volume (PVR), PSA levels and prostate volume before injection and after 3 and 6 months were evaluated.
