Prevalence of Absence of Palmaris Longus Tendon in a Population Sample from a Multiethnic Brazilian City.

 The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of absence of palmaris longus tendon in a population sample from a multiethnic Brazilian city.  A cross-sectional observational study was carried out between October 2017 and April 2018. We included male and female volunteers aged 18 years or older.

Physical training improves physical activity levels but is associated with amplification of sedentary behavior in older women.

Physical activity level (PAL) and sedentary behavior (SB) are independent predictors of mortality. It is unclear how these predictors interact with each other and health variables. Investigate the bidirectional relationship between PAL and SB, and their impact and health variables of women aged 60 to 70 years.

An Intraindividual Comparison of Open versus Paine Retinaculotome Release for Bilateral Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

The main purpose of this research was to do an intraindividual comparison of outcomes between the open ulnar incision (OUI) and the Paine retinaculotome with palmar incision (PRWPI) techniques in patients with bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The patients underwent OUI surgery on one hand and PRWPI surgery on the contralateral hand. The patients were evaluated with the Boston carpal tunnel questionnaire, visual analogue scale for pain, palmar grip strength, and fingertip, key, and tripod pinch strengths.

Earthworms in various agricultural and forest ecosystems in São Carlos-SP, Brazil.

Integrated agricultural systems have been greatly expanding in Brazil and currently cover over 30 million hectares. Although these land use systems help soil and environmental quality, little is known of their impacts on earthworm communities. In the present study we evaluated earthworm abundance, biomass and species richness in various integrated and conventional agricultural production systems (pasture, crops), as well as native forest and Eucalyptus plantations.

Use of aerobic treadmill exercises on nerve regeneration after sciatic nerve injury in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Purpose: Various postoperative protocols have been proposed to improve outcomes and accelerate nerve regeneration. Recently, the use of physical exercise in a post-surgical neurorraphy procedure has shown good results when started early. We experimentally investigated the hypothesis that post-operative exercise speeds up results and improves clinical and morphologic parameters.

COVID-19 AND UPPER LIMB ANOMALIES IN NEWBORNS: A REASON FOR CONCERN?

The risks for the SARS-CoV-2 virus interfering with implantation, growth, and fetal development are not yet known. Many drugs with potential teratogenic risk are being used for treatment.

Translation and Cultural Adaptation to Brazilian Portuguese of the Children's Physical Activity Questionnaire (C-PAQ).

 To perform the translation and cultural adaptation to Brazilian Portuguese of the Children's Physical Activity Questionnaire  The process involved the stages of translation, synthesis, back-translation, and revision by the translation group. A prefinal version of the questionnaire was then created, and, subsequently, the final version.  Due to the lifestyle of the population, eight activities described in the questionnaire were changed to adapt it to Brazilian culture: six sports activities and two leisure activities.

Translation and cross-cultural adaptation of "Trapeziometacarpal Arthrosis Symptoms and Disability-TASD" into Brazilian Portuguese.

Background: Osteoarthritis is the most common form of hand arthritis and arthritis of the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb is a potentially limiting disease. There is no homogeneity in the evaluation of outcomes for the rhizarthrosis treatment. In an attempt to standardize the evaluation of results, some subjective questionnaires, non-specific, were used to evaluate rhizarthrosis.

SCLEROTHERAPY WITH 75% HYPERTONIC GLUCOSE TO TREAT DORSAL SYNOVIAL CYSTS OF THE WRIST.

Objective: To evaluate the cure rate for dorsal synovial cysts of the wrist with aspiration and percutaneous sclerotherapy using 75% hypertonic glucose.

Methods: We enrolled 45 patients older than 18 years with untreated dorsal synovial cysts of the wrist. They underwent percutaneous aspiration and sclerotherapy with 75% hypertonic glucose 75%.

Perspectives and Consensus among International Orthopaedic Surgeons during Initial and Mid-lockdown Phases of Coronavirus Disease.

With a lot of uncertainty, unclear, and frequently changing management protocols, COVID-19 has significantly impacted the orthopaedic surgical practice during this pandemic crisis. Surgeons around the world needed closed introspection, contemplation, and prospective consensual recommendations for safe surgical practice and prevention of viral contamination. One hundred orthopaedic surgeons from 50 countries were sent a Google online form with a questionnaire explicating protocols for admission, surgeries, discharge, follow-up, relevant information affecting their surgical practices, difficulties faced, and many more important issues that happened during and after the lockdown.

Changing Concepts for the Diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Powerlifting Athletes with Disabilities.

 To examine the prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome in powerlifting athletes with disabilities.  The present study evaluated the presence and intensity of pain (numerical scale), nocturnal paresthesia (self-report), and nerve compression (Tinel and Phalen signs) in wheelchair- and non-wheelchair-bound powerlifting athletes with disabilities. The clinical diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome was confirmed by the presence of two or more signs/symptoms.

Failure factors for carpal tunnel syndrome surgical treatment: When and how to perform a revision carpal tunnel decompression surgery.

Despite being a procedure widely used all over the world with high rates of symptom remission, surgical treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome may present unsatisfactory outcomes. Such outcomes may be manifested clinically by non-remission of symptoms, remission of symptoms with recurrence a time after surgery or appearance of different symptoms after surgery. Different factors are related to this unsuccessful surgical treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Translation and Cross-cultural Adaptation of the "Thumb Disability Exam - TDX" questionnaire into Brazilian Portuguese.

 To perform the translation, cultural adaptation and validation of the Thumb Disability Exam (TDX) questionnaire into Brazilian Portuguese.  The questionnaire was translated, with reverse translation. The translations were evaluated and synthesized by a committee, resulting in the THUMB DISABILITY EXAM - BRASIL (TDX-BR).

Prevalence of Absence of Function of the Flexor Digitorum Superficialis Muscle Tendons in the Fourth and Fifth Fingers of the Hand in the Brazilian Population.

 To evaluate the prevalence of absence of flexor digitorum superficialis muscle tendons function of the fourth and fifth fingers of the hand in the Brazilian population  Prospective study performed at the orthopedics and traumatology department of a university hospital. The study was conducted from October 2017 to April 2018. The sample consisted of volunteers with no history of upper limb trauma, surgery or any other condition.

Assessment of the Effects of Swimming as a Postoperative Rehabilitation on Nerve Regeneration of Wistar Rats Submitted to Grafting of Autologous Nerves after Injury to the Sciatic Nerve.

 To evaluate the effects of swimming on nerve regeneration after sciatic nerve injury in Wistar rats.  A total of 30 Wistar rats was divided into 3 groups: Sham + Nat group animals that were not submitted to graft surgery and were submitted to swimming (  = 10); Graft group: animals submitted to autologous sciatic nerve graft (  = 10); and Graft + Nat group: animals submitted to autologous sciatic nerve graft surgery and to swimming (  = 10). The results were analyzed on the software (GraphPad Software, San Diego, CA, USA).

The prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome in adapted Sports athletes based on clinical diagnostic.

Background: Electrical studies are often used to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We noticed differences in results when we considered the clinical tests.

Objectives: What's the prevalence of CTS in adapted sports athletes based on clinical diagnostic? Is there any relationship between the presence of symptoms and the use of wheelchairs, the type of sport practiced, dominance and how long the sport had been practiced?

Hypothesis: The prevalence of CTS in adapted sports athletes is close to that of the general population.

Circular saw misuse is related to upper limb injuries: a cross-sectional study.

Objectives: Machinery injuries account for a substantial share of traumatic upper limb injuries (TULIs) affecting young active individuals. This study is based on the hypothesis that there is an important relationship between the improper use of power saws and TULIs. The aim of the study is to assess the prevalence and epidemiology of TULIs caused by power saws and determine the risks related to power saw use.

The Role of the Hand Surgeon in Microsurgery in Brazil.

 This study evaluates the conditions for microvascular procedures found by hand surgeons in Brazilian clinical practices.  A prospective, observational, and analytical primary clinical research conducted during the 37 Brazilian Congress of Hand Surgery, from March 30 to April 1 , 2017, in Belo Horizonte, in which physicians answered 12 closed, objective, multiple-choice questions regarding their geographic region, type of institution (public or private), microsurgical training, time of experience, technical conditions, the availability of a standby team for emergencies and compensation.  The study analyzed 143 hand surgeons; among them, 65.

Intra-individual evaluation of results between open and endoscopic release in bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome.

Objective: The authors performed an intra-individual comparison of surgical results between the open and endoscopic surgical techniques in patients with bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome. Each hand was submitted to surgery using one of these techniques.

Methods: Fifteen patients (30 hands) were evaluated by the Boston Questionnaire, visual analogue pain scale, palmar grip strength, and for tip, key, and tripod pinch strengths.

APPLICABILITY OF RANDOMIZED TRIALS IN HAND SURGERY: SURVEY STUDY.

Objective: To assess the applicability of randomized clinical trials and whether certain factors (surgeon experience/journal impact factor) influence their applicability.

Methods: In this survey study we used the Pubmed/Medline database to select 32 consecutive randomized clinical trials published between 2013 and 2015, involving hand surgery (high/low impact). These studies were independently assessed by 20 hand surgeons (with more or less than 10 years of practice) who answered 4 questions regarding their applicability.
