Technological advancement in the treatment of cancer together with early detection and diagnosis have considerably improved the survival of breast cancer patients. On the other hand, the potential of patients developing side effects from cancer treatment are not negligible. Purpose: Small animal irradiators are equipped with x-ray beams and cone collimators with millimeter dimensions to be used in preclinical research. The use of small fields in the kV energy range may require the application of energy-dependent, field size-dependent, or depth-dependent correction factors to the dosimetric data acquired for treatment planning system (TPS) commissioning purposes to obtain accurate dose values. Considering that these corrections are also detector dependent, the suitability of a synthetic single-crystal diamond detector for small-field relative dosimetry in a preclinical irradiator (220-kVp) was evaluated to avoid the necessity of applying correction factors during TPS commissioning.

Currently, guidelines for small-field kV photon dosimetry of small animal irradiators have not been published, and most of the publications are based on radiochromic film dosimetry. Purpose: To determine the effects of different polychemotherapy drugs on cortical bone structure, the femur diaphysis of rats were treated with two different chemotherapy drugs, AC (doxorubicin + cyclophosphamide) and TC (docetaxel + cyclophosphamide), and evaluated by 3D morphological analysis using synchrotron radiation microtomography.

Purpose: The goal of this study was to evaluate the safety and quality management program for stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatment processes at three radiotherapy centers in Brazil by using three industrial engineering tools (1) process mapping, (2) failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), and (3) fault tree analysis.

Methods: The recommendations of Task Group 100 of American Association of Physicists in Medicine were followed to apply the three tools described above to create a process tree for SRS procedure for each radiotherapy center and then FMEA was performed. Failure modes were identified for all process steps and values of risk priority number (RPN) were calculated from O, S, and D (RPN = O × S × D) values assigned by a professional team responsible for patient care.

FT-Raman spectroscopy has been explored as a quick screening method to evaluate the presence of lactose and identify milk powder samples adulterated with maltodextrin (2.5-50% w/w). A better understanding of biological interactions that occur after exposure to photon radiation is needed in order to optimize therapeutic regimens and facilitate development and strategies that decrease radiation-induced side effects in humans. In this work, ribs of Wistar rat submitted to radiotherapy simulation were imaged using synchrotron radiation computed microtomography at Elettra Synchrotron Laboratory in Trieste, Italy. Histomorphometric parameters were calculated directly from the 3D microtomographic images and showed significant differences between irradiated and non-irradiated groups.
