Oral health behavior associated with cardiometabolic outcomes: A nationally representative cross-sectional study in Portugal.

Developing strong and simultaneously tough polymeric materials with excellent thermal stability and mechanical performance even under extreme temperatures is truly a challenge. In a disruptive progress, continuous polymeric yarns are developed with a combination of high tensile strength of (1145 ± 44) MPa and ultrahigh toughness of (350 ± 24) J g and high thermomechanical properties from -196 to 200 °C. The comprehensive thermomechanical performance of this yarn surpasses that of previously developed polymeric materials and dragline spider silks.

Structure-Metabolism Relationships of Benzimidazole Derivatives with anti-Trypanosoma cruzi Activity for Chagas Disease.

This study introduces further insights from the hit-to-lead optimization process involving a series of benzimidazole derivatives acting as inhibitors of the cruzain enzyme, which targets Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative parasite of Chagas disease. Here, we present the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of 30 new compounds as a third generation of benzimidazole analogues with trypanocidal activity, aiming to enhance our understanding of their pharmacokinetic profiles and establish a structure-metabolism relationships within the series. The design of these new analogues was guided by the analysis of previous pharmacokinetic results, considering identified metabolic sites and biotransformation studies.

Vascular contraction of umbilical arteries of pregnant women with preeclampsia.

Objective: Potassium channels have an important role in the vascular adaptation during pregnancy and a reduction in the expression of adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium channels (Katp) has been linked to preeclampsia. Activation of Katp induces vasodilation; however, no previous study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of the inhibition of these channels in the contractility of preeclamptic arteries. Glibenclamide is an oral antihyperglycemic agent that inhibits Katp and has been widely used in vascular studies.

Mayaro virus (MAYV) is an emerging arthropod-borne virus endemic in Latin America and the causative agent of arthritogenic febrile disease. Mayaro fever is poorly understood; thus, we established an in vivo model of infection in susceptible type-I interferon receptor-deficient mice (IFNAR-/-) to characterize the disease. MAYV inoculations in the hind paws of IFNAR-/- mice result in visible paw inflammation, evolve into a disseminated infection and involve the activation of immune responses and inflammation.

Longitudinal association between grip strength and the risk of heart diseases among European middle-aged and older adults.

Background: Few multi-country European studies have investigated the association between grip strength and heart diseases incidence. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyse the longitudinal relationship between grip strength and the diagnosis of heart diseases in European middle-aged and older adults.

Method: A prospective cohort study was conducted using data from the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (2004-2017).

COVID-19 mRNA vaccine effectiveness (second and first booster dose) against hospitalisation and death during Omicron BA.5 circulation: cohort study based on electronic health records, Portugal, May to July 2022.

We measured vaccine effectiveness (VE) against COVID-19-related severe outcomes in elderly people in Portugal between May and July 2022. In ≥ 80 year-olds, the second booster dose VE was 81% (95% CI: 75-85) and 82% (95% CI: 77-85), respectively, against COVID-19-related hospitalisation and death. The first booster dose VE was 63% (95% CI: 55-70) in ≥ 80 year-olds and 74% (95% CI: 66-80) in 60-79 year-olds against hospitalisation, and 63% (95% CI: 57-69) and 65% (95% CI: 54-74) against death.

Local problem solving in the Portuguese health examination survey: a mixed method study.

Background: Participation rates in health surveys, recognized as an important quality dimension, have been declining over the years, which may affect representativeness and confidence in results. The Portuguese national health examination survey INSEF (2015) achieved a participation rate of 43.9%, which is in line with participation rates from other similar health examination surveys.

Characterization, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity of polymer blends based on chitosan and fish collagen.

This study aims to produce, characterize, and assess the antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity of polymer blends based on chitosan (CT) and fish collagen (COL) produced by different precipitation methods. Polymer blends were obtained in alkaline (NaOH), saline (NaCl), and alkaline/saline (NaOH/NaCl) solutions with different CT:COL concentration ratios (20:80, 50:50, and 80:20). The polymer blends were characterized by various physicochemical methods and subsequently evaluated in terms of their in vitro antimicrobial and cytotoxicity activity.

Possible influences of vitamin D levels on sleep quality, depression, anxiety and physiological stress in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a case control study.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin D deficiency on sleep quality, depression, anxiety, and physiological stress in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We screened for COPD patients with normal (NorVD) (n=24) and insufficient (InsVD) (n=7) vitamin D levels. The Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), the Beck anxiety inventory (BAI), the Beck depression inventory (BDI) and the Baevsky's stress index were used for the sleep and psychometric evaluation.

Effect of at-home bleaching gels with different thickeners on the physical properties of a composite resin without bisphenol A.

Objective: To investigate, in vitro, the influence of at-home bleaching with 16% carbamide peroxide (CP) gels containing different thickeners on the color, gloss, roughness, and microhardness of a composite resin with bisphenol A (BPA) and without bisphenol A (BPA-free).

Material And Methods: Cylindrical samples (7 × 2 mm) of a composite resin with BPA (Filtek Z350 XT®; 3M/ESPE) and composite resin BPA-free (Vittra APS®; FGM) were subdivided into six subgroups (n = 12), according to the bleaching gel used: no bleaching (control), commercial gel with 16% CP and carbopol, experimental gel with 16% CP and carbopol, experimental gel with 16% CP and natrosol, experimental gel with carbopol and experimental gel with natrosol. At the end of the experimental phase, the specimens were analyzed for color (ΔE* and ΔE ), surface roughness (Ra), gloss (GU), and surface microhardness (SMH).

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis: An atypical initial presentation.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a necrotizing vasculitis of small and medium vessels with involvement of the upper and lower respiratory tract and necrotizing pauci-immune glomerulonephritis [1]. This vasculitis has a higher incidence in men in the sixth decade of life and more than 80% of patients have positive anti-neutrophil cytoplasm (ANCA) antibodies [1,2]. We present the case of a 23-year-old man with two weeks of evolution with polyarthralgia, asthenia, and cough with hemoptoic sputum.

Correlation of sleep quality and cardiac autonomic modulation in hemodialysis patients.

Objectives: Sleep disorders in patients on hemodialysis are frequent, but few studies correlate these disorders with autonomic dysfunction in these patients. This study aimed to verify whether clinical and laboratory variables and heart rate variability are associated with worse sleep quality verified by the Pittsburg subjective scale in patients on hemodialysis.

Cardiac channelopathies are a heterogeneous group of inherited cardiac diseases that are associated with mutations in the genes that encode the expression of cardiac ion channels. In view of this, it can be mentioned that the main hereditary arrhythmias in children and adolescents, caused by dysfunction of the ion channels, are Brugada Syndrome (BrS) and Long QT Syndrome (LQTS). However, few studies address the physiological effects of these conditions on children and adolescents.

Carvacrol reduces blood pressure, arterial responsiveness and increases expression of MAS receptors in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Aim: To analyze the effect of the use of carvacrol in the cardiovascular system of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR).

Methods: Methods: Twenty animals were allocated in four groups, one group control Wistar receiving only sorbitol, used as vehicle of administration of the carvacrol (Wistar-Vehicle), one control group SHR, also receive only sorbitol (SHR-Vehicle), a third, treated with losartan (SHR-Losartan/50 mg/kg), and the fourth, treated with carvacrol (SHR - Carvacrol/20 mg/kg). Sorbitol, losartan and carvacrol were administered by oral gavage daily for 30-day.
