Article Synopsis
  • Adiponectin and leptin are key hormones that impact the brain's function, particularly during the critical postpartum period for mothers and their infants, affecting maternal mood and infant development.
  • * The study aims to investigate how levels of adiponectin and leptin in mothers’ blood and breast milk relate to infant neurodevelopment at 6 and 12 months old and maternal mental health during the first year postpartum.
  • * A prospective cohort study is underway, having recruited 68 out of 95 mother-infant pairs as of September 2023, focusing on various factors like maternal depression, infant growth, and nutritional habits to improve healthcare strategies for mothers and infants.*

Background: Zoledronic acid (ZA) improved outcomes in breast cancer. In pre-clinical studies, ZA increased tumour regression in combination chemotherapy and anti-human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) target therapy. The Zo-NAnTax study, a clinical trial combining ZA with neoadjuvant therapy for HER2-positive tumours met the primary endpoint, showing a higher pathological complete response (pCR) rate than predicted in patients receiving surgery.

The intrinsic subtype of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is based on genomic evaluation. In this study, we report the survival and pathological complete response (pCR) rates of TNBC patients subtyped by IHC and treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). A retrospective cohort of 187 TNBC patients who received NACT between 2008 and 2017 was used, and IHC subtyping was performed on biopsy specimens before chemotherapy.

Background: It remains unclear whether the current arbitrary screening recommendations of trastuzumab-related cardiotoxicity provides an adequate balance between preventing heart damage and curtailing a curative treatment.

Aim: To determine the incidence rate and consequences of trastuzumab-induced cardiotoxicity as adjuvant treatment in a real-world scenario.

Methods: We present a retrospective analysis of cardiac function measured by echocardiogram at baseline and every 3 mo during trastuzumab treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The text compares the sampling plans of the Brazilian National Health Surveys conducted in 2013 and 2019, focusing on how the changes impacted the coefficient of variation (CV) and the design effect (Deff) of various health indicators.
  • It highlights that for most indicators in the 2019 survey, both the CV and Deff values decreased, indicating improved estimates, except for certain indicators like health insurance coverage which had high Deff values.
  • The text concludes that while expanding the sample size presents challenges, new probabilistic sampling strategies are necessary to minimize costs and reduce clustering effects in national health surveys.

: One of the most frequently mutated oncogenes in cancer belongs to the Ras family of proto-oncogenes, which encode distinct key signaling events. RAS gain-of-function mutations are present in ~30% of all human cancers, with KRAS being the most frequently mutated isoform showing alterations in different cancer types including lung cancer. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of KRAS mutations, and concomitant mutations, in advanced non-small cell lung adenocarcinoma patients.

Background: Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is characterized rapid tumor growth, and increased metastatic potential compared to other breast cancer subtypes. However, pathological complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) can predict patients with a better prognosis. Clinical predictors of pCR such as tumor size (TS) are controversial.

Objectives: Mammalian cells differently express 4 RAS isoforms: H-RAS, N-RAS, K-RAS4A and K-RAS4B, which are important in promoting oncogenic processes when mutated. In lung cancer, the K-RAS isoform is the most frequently altered RAS protein, being also a difficult therapeutic target. Interestingly, there are two K-RAS splice variants (K-RAS4A and K-RAS4B) and little is known about the role of K-RAS4A.

This paper analyzes the medical care given at Brazilian urgent and emergency healthcare services to people injured by firearms in 2014. A cross-sectional study was carried out on care given to patients with firearms injuries in 24 capital cities of Brazilian states and in the Brazilian Federal District, included in the VIVA Survey. Simple and relative frequencies of the variables related to the patients and to the event were calculated, and a logistic model for complex samples was applied adopting care for firearms injuries patients as outcome.

This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the cases of falls in urgent and emergency care services of 24 Brazilian capitals and the Federal District participating in the 2014 VIVA Survey. We sought to describe the epidemiological profile of victims, characterizing the event and the severity of injuries it caused and to perform an association study. We calculated the simple and relative frequencies of variables and performed multivariate logistic regression analysis for complex sample data in order to verify associations between falls and selected variables.

Introduction:: Brazil has the sixth largest bicycles fleet in the world and bicycle is the most used individual transport vehicle in the country. Few studies address the issue of cyclists' accidents and factors that contribute to or prevent this event.

Methodology:: VIVA is a cross-sectional survey and is part of the Violence and Accidents Surveillance System, Brazilian Ministry of Health.

Purpose: To carry out a study of association between socioeconomic and demographic factors and homicides in general population, in the state of Bahia, in 2009.

Methods: This is an ecological study. The data were collected from the database of the Information System about Mortality of the Ministry of Health, from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics and the Institute of Applied Economic Research.
