Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the correlation between rheumatic fever (RF) history and benzathine penicillin (BP) treatment with extensive macular atrophy with pseudodrusen (EMAP) in Brazilian patients through a retrospective, observational case-control approach.
  • - Out of 77 patients (66.2% women, average age 58.6), a significant majority had a history of RF (90.9%) and BP treatment (94.8% starting at an average age of 7.3 years with an 11.8-year duration).
  • - Results showed that longer BP treatment duration was linked to a decrease in atrophic area, while older age at RF diagnosis influenced the likelihood of subretinal dr

The current report describes an outbreak of vesicular disease affecting dairy cows in midwestern Brazil in which a coinfection with 2 poxviruses-Vaccinia virus (VACV) and a parapoxvirus-was demonstrated. Milking cows presented vesicles, painful reddish or whitish papules, and scabby proliferative lesions in the teats and udder, in a clinical course of approximately 10-21 days. Histologically, multifocal areas of moderate to severe acanthosis, spongiosis, hypergranulosis, and parakeratotic or orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis with adjacent focally extensive ulcers were observed in the epidermis.

Three-dimensional computerized tomography angiography is a fast diagnosis method and low invasive that passed to be used recently in the cases of intracranial aneurysms. This method presents a 100% specificity and can reach 95% of sensibility in the evaluation of the aneurysms in the circle of Willis, substituting the digital angiography but not in all of the cases. We report our experience in evaluation of the three-dimensional angiotomography exams in a period of 2 years between June of 1997 and June of 1999, were accomplished for detection of intracranial aneurysms in 136 patients, being 118 just with three-dimensional angiotomography and in 18 cases they were accomplished besides three-dimensional angiotomography also the conventional digital angiography.
