Parasitic communities of Hoplosternum littorale (Hancock, 1828) as indicators of environmental impact.

The parasites are indicative of several biological aspects of their hosts, including their diet, migration, recruitment and phylogeny, but they can also be direct indicators of the environmental quality. Hoplosternum littorale is a fish that has a high commercial value in some South American countries. The fishes were collected from January to July 2012, in two locations of the Peixe River in the municipality of Anhembi, State of São Paulo, Brazil, which had different environmental and limnological characteristics (river mouth and Lagoa Cabeça de Boi).

Triiodothyronine (T3) induces HIF1A and TGFA expression in MCF7 cells by activating PI3K.

High expression levels of hypoxia inducing factor 1 alpha are related to mammary carcinogenesis. In previous studies, we demonstrated that expression of transforming growth factor alpha increases upon treatment with triiodothyronine, but this expression does not occur in cellular models that do not express the estrogen receptor, or when cells are co-treated with the anti-estrogen, tamoxifen. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the hormone triiodothyronine on the expression of the genes HIF1A and TGFA in the breast cancer cell line MCF7.

Late treatment of a mandibular gunshot wound.

Mandibular gunshot injuries are esthetically and functionally devastating, causing comminuted fractures and adjacent tissue destruction depending on the weapon gauge, projectile shape, impact kinetic energy, and density of the injured structures. If the mandibular fracture is not adequate or promptly treated, the broken fragments will fail to heal. In case of a treatment delay, progressive bone loss and fracture contracture will require a customized approach, which includes open reduction, removal of fibrous tissue between the bony stumps, and fixation of the fracture with a reconstruction plate and autogenous graft.

Obesity does not lead to imbalance between myocardial phospholamban phosphorylation and dephosphorylation.

Background: The activation of the beta-adrenergic system promotes G protein stimulation that, via cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), alters the structure of protein kinase A (PKA) and leads to phospholamban (PLB) phosphorylation. This protein participates in the system that controls intracellular calcium in muscle cells, and it is the primary regulator of sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium pump activity. In obesity, the beta-adrenergic system is activated by the influence of increased leptin, therefore, resulting in higher myocardial phospholamban phosphorylation via cAMP-PKA.

Arteriographic findings in diabetic and non-diabetic with critical limb ischemia.

Objective: To compare angiographic findings of diabetic and non-diabetic patients with critical limb ischemia.

Methods: We included 161 patients with infrainguinal critical limb ischemia (CLI). We evaluated the clinical and arteriographic (number and presence of opacification of leg arteries) of the two groups of patients.

Use and knowledge of Cactaceae in Northeastern Brazil.

Background: This study aimed to record the use, and knowledge that residents from São Francisco community (Paraiba, Brazil) have regarding the Cactaceae.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 118 informants; 50 men and 68 women. The cacti cited in this study were organised into use categories and use values were calculated.

Involvement of L-type calcium channel and SERCA2a in myocardial dysfunction induced by obesity.

Obesity has been shown to impair myocardial performance. Nevertheless, the mechanisms underlying the participation of calcium (Ca(2+) ) handling on cardiac dysfunction in obesity models remain unknown. L-type Ca(2+) channels and sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca(2+) -ATPase (SERCA2a), may contribute to the cardiac dysfunction induced by obesity.

Cavernous sinus thrombosis in a patient with facial myiasis.

Cavernous sinus thrombosis is a severe encephalic complication of the cervicofacial infections that can lead to death if not treated in adequate time. Among the several etiologies related to the development of this infection, myiasis has not been reported, enforcing the importance of the report of a case of thrombosis of the cavernous sinus developed from a facial myiasis.

Comparison of the temporal hemifield and nasal hemifield sensitivity in patients with early-onset convergent strabismus.

Objective: To analyze the hypothesis that a reduction in sensitivity of the nasal visual hemifield would lead to an increase in the nasotemporal asymmetry of the visual field in patients under two years of age with early-onset convergent strabismus in comparison with normal patients.

Methods: Both eyes of 66 patients - 33 esotropes and 33 normals - were studied. Patients' age ranged from 7 to 30 years.

Pleomorphic multicentric adenoma in the submandibular gland.

Neoplasms of salivary glands represent a small group among the diseases involving the head and neck complex. In this group, the pleomorphic adenoma is the most frequent neoplasm, yet involves the submandibular gland in only 12.3% of cases.

Imaging modality correlations of an odontogenic keratocyst in the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome: a family case report.

Multiple maxillary and mandibular cysts are principle features of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS; Gorlin-Goltz syndrome). We present a family case report of NBCCS with odontogenic keratocyst where the findings on plain films, CT, clinical, and histopathologic examinations are compared and analyzed. The systemic manifestations included frontal bossing, odontogenic keratocyst, ectopic calcification in 1 patient, and bifid rib in 1 patient.

Surgical treatment of endocrine exophthalmos by removal of orbital fat: clinical experience.

Purpose: To report a series of 73 patients with endocrine exophthalmos treated by removal of orbital fat using the transpalpebral approach during the period 1989 to 1999.

Methods: The operation was performed according to the technique described by Olivari. Aesthetic analysis was done preoperatively and postoperatively (more than 6 months after surgery).
