Methods: We reported a case of a 61-year-old man with a mycotic pseudoaneurysm of carotid bifurcation.
In newborn humans, and up to approximately 2 y of age, calvarial bone defects can naturally regenerate. This remarkable regeneration potential is also found in newborn mice and is absent in adult mice. Since previous studies showed that the mouse calvarial sutures are reservoirs of calvarial skeletal stem cells (cSSCs), which are the cells responsible for calvarial bone regeneration, here we hypothesized that the regenerative potential of the newborn mouse calvaria is due to a significant amount of cSSCs present in the newborn expanding sutures.

This study gives an effective temporal dimension of the diagnostic delay that occurred during the pandemic, compared with data from the literature.
Methods: A retrospective analysis of the diagnostic path of a patient affected by oral cancer during COVID-19 pandemic was performed.
Objective: The prognostic significance of the resection margins is still subject of conflicting opinions. The purpose of this paper is to report the results of a study on the margins in carcinoma of the oral cavity, oro-hypopharynx and larynx.
Methods: A multicentre prospective study was carried out between 2015 and 2018 with the participation of 10 Italian reference hospitals.
The repeated evolution of tetrodotoxin (TTX) resistance provides a model for testing hypotheses about the mechanisms of convergent evolution. This poison is broadly employed as a potent antipredator defence, blocking voltage-gated sodium channels (Na ) in muscles and nerves, paralysing and sometimes killing predators. Resistance in taxa bearing this neurotoxin and a few predators appears to come from convergent replacements in specific Na residues that interact with TTX.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFUnlabelled: The aims of the study were: 1) to evaluate the effect on biofilm formation of barrier membranes and titanium surfaces coated with graphene-oxide (GO); 2) to analyze the connection between the superficial topography of the tested materials and the amount of bacterial accumulation on them and 3) to analyze the biocompatibility of GO functionalized discs using the zebrafish model.
Methods: Single species bacterial biofilms (Streptococcus oralis, Veilonella parvula, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyomonas gingivalis) were grown on GO-free membranes, membranes coated with 2 and 10 μg/ml of GO, GO-free and GO-coated titanium discs. The biofilms were analyzed by determining the CFU count and by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and the materials' topography by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).
Objective: To date, no useful prognostic biomarker exists for patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC), a tumour with uncertain biological behaviour and subsequent unpredictable clinical course. We aim to investigate the prognostic significance of two recurrent somatic mutations (-124 C>T and -146 C>T) within the promoter of telomerase reverse transcriptase () gene and the impact of TERT single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs2853669 in patients surgically treated for OCSCC.
Methods: The genetic frequencies of rs2853669, -124 C>T and -146 C>T as well as the telomere length were investigated in 144 tumours and 57 normal adjacent mucosal (AM) specimens from OCSCC patients.
Background: The effects of swimming training associated with insulin treatment on the cortical bone health in young rats with severe type 1 diabetes remain unclear, although there is evidence of such effects on the cancellous bone. This study examined the effects of swimming training combined with insulin therapy on the femoral midshaft structural and mechanical properties in growing rats with type 1 diabetes.
Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into six groups ( = 10): control sedentary, control exercise, diabetic sedentary, diabetic exercise, diabetic sedentary plus insulin and diabetic exercise plus insulin.

Patients And Methods: We performed a cohort study with a composite primary outcome assigned at the end of a 1-year follow-up. The outcome was assigned in the presence of all the following: 1) absence of intraoral or skin extrusion of REPLICA; 2) decrease or cessation of oral pain; 3) stability or increase in mouth opening; 4) resumption of oral feeding without the need of nasogastric tube; 5) absence of fracture at multidetector computer tomography (MDCT); 6) absence of displacement (MDCT); 7) absence of screw loosening (MDCT).
Introduction: Cerebral ischemia causes muscle atrophy and motor incoordination in animals, impairing motor performance.
Objective: Thus, the objective of the present study was to analyze the motor performance and histomorphometry of the biceps brachii, soleus, and anterior tibialis muscles of rats submitted to a treadmill training program after induction of cerebral ischemia by the transient occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCAO).

Physical exercise is a known preventive and therapeutic alternative for several cerebrovascular diseases. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the motor performance and histomorphometry of the biceps brachii, soleus, and tibialis anterior muscles of rats submitted to a treadmill training program prior to the induction of cerebral ischemia via occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (OMCA). A total of 24 Wistar rats were distributed into four groups: Sham-Sed: sedentary control animals (n=6), who underwent sham surgery (in which OMCA did not occur); Sham+Ex: control animals exercised before the sham surgery (n=6); I-Sed: sedentary animals with cerebral ischemia (n=6); and I+Ex: animals exercised before the induction of ischemia (n=6).

Methods: A total of 60 male Wistar rats (age: 40 days) were divided equally into the following six groups: control sedentary, control exercise, diabetic sedentary, diabetic exercise, diabetic sedentary plus insulin and diabetic exercise plus insulin. Diabetes was induced with a unique intraperitoneal injection (60 mg/kg body weight) of streptozotocin.
(1) Background: The aim of this study was to optimize, through a cheap and facile protocol, the covalent functionalization of graphene oxide (GO)-decorated cortical membrane (Lamina) in order to promote the adhesion, the growth and the osteogenic differentiation of DPSCs (Dental Pulp Stem Cells); (2) Methods: GO-coated Laminas were fully characterized by Scannsion Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) analyses. In vitro analyses of viability, membrane integrity and calcium phosphate deposition were performed; (3) Results: The GO-decorated Laminas demonstrated an increase in the roughness of Laminas, a reduction in toxicity and did not affect membrane integrity of DPSCs; and (4) Conclusions: The GO covalent functionalization of Laminas was effective and relatively easy to obtain. The homogeneous GO coating obtained favored the proliferation rate of DPSCs and the deposition of calcium phosphate.

A secondary end-point was to conduct a preliminary clinical and pathological investigation into the possible role of β-arrestin-1 in the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), identified by testing for E-cadherin, Zeb1, and Zeb2 expression, in the setting of LSCC.
Methods: The expression of β-arrestin-1, E-cadherin, zeb1, and zeb2 was ascertained in 20 consecutive LSCCs.
Background: When advanced, oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) may involve adjacent non-epithelial structures, and the prognosis is worse for bone invasion. Human relaxin-2 is a peptide hormone that has recently been associated with cancer. It can induce human osteoclast differentiation and activation, suggesting a role in tumor-driven osteolysis.
