We explored the electrochemical behavior of antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) and perylene diimide (PDI)-sensitized ATO (ATO-PDI) for the (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) mediated conversion of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a value-added substrate for alternative polymer synthesis. We first showed that ATO displayed good electrocatalytic properties towards TEMPO, affording a quasi-reversible response with a heterogeneous rate constant on the order of 2×10 cm s. We then evaluated the performance of ATO under exhaustive electrolysis of HMF in basic aqueous electrolyte, reaching 80 % Faradaic Efficiency (FE) for FDCA production.

Introduction: Historically, Parkinson's Disease (PD) research has focused on the dysfunction of dopamine-producing cells in the substantia nigra pars compacta, which is linked to motor regulation in the basal ganglia. Therapies have mainly aimed at restoring dopamine (DA) levels, showing effectiveness but variable outcomes and side effects. Recent evidence indicates that PD complexity implicates disruptions in DA, noradrenaline (NA), and serotonin (5-HT) systems, which may underlie the variations in therapy effects.

The authors present a case report of a 68-year-old man evaluated at the emergency department for repeated syncope, asthenia, and general malaise, suggesting heart failure in a patient with several comorbidities. At presentation, the patient was afebrile, but he had reported a low-grade fever in the previous six months. At first glance, transthoracic echocardiography was not clear, while transesophageal echocardiography revealed an echo-free image at the level of the non-coronary sinus of the aortic root, suggestive of a pseudoaneurysm, communicating with the right atrium with continuous systo-diastolic flow, compatible with the aorto-cavitary fistula between the aortic root and the RA.

Article Synopsis
  • Low-voltage area (LVA) ablation, combined with pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), is being studied as a treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF), but previous clinical trials have shown mixed results.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of 1547 patients from 7 studies revealed that adding LVA ablation significantly reduced the chances of atrial arrhythmia recurrence after the first AF ablation procedure.
  • The study found no significant differences in procedure time, fluoroscopy time, or complication rates between those receiving LVA ablation and those who did not.

Autosomal recessive pathogenetic variants in the gene cause deficiency of deoxyguanosine kinase activity and mitochondrial deoxynucleotides pool imbalance, consequently, leading to quantitative and/or qualitative impairment of mitochondrial DNA synthesis. Typically, patients present early-onset liver failure with or without neurological involvement and a clinical course rapidly progressing to death. This is an international multicentre study aiming to provide a retrospective natural history of deoxyguanosine kinase deficient patients.

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) causes diarrhea in pigs at early age, leading to high mortality rates and significant economic losses in the swine industry. ETEC effect on gut microbiota and immune system is mostly studied in diarrheic model under controlled laboratory conditions, however its impact on asymptomatic carriers remains unknown. Thus, we investigated whether ETEC can modulate gut microbiota or regulate the transcription of immune markers in asymptomatic pigs in farm environment.

Supercapacitors offer notable properties as energy storage devices, providing high power density and fast charging and discharging while maintaining a long cycling lifetime. Although poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) has become a gold standard among organic electronics materials, researchers are still investigating ways to further improve its capacitive characteristics. In this work, we introduced Nafion as an alternative polymeric counterion to PSS to form highly capacitive PEDOT/Nafion; its advantageous supercapacitive properties were further improved by treatment with either dimethyl sulfoxide or ethylene glycol.

Mitochondria are cytoplasmic organelles having a fundamental role in the regulation of neural stem cell (NSC) fate during neural development and maintenance.During embryonic and adult neurogenesis, NSCs undergo a metabolic switch from glycolytic to oxidative phosphorylation with a rise in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content, changes in mitochondria shape and size, and a physiological augmentation of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species which together drive NSCs to proliferate and differentiate. Genetic and epigenetic modifications of proteins involved in cellular differentiation (Mechanistic Target of Rapamycin), proliferation (Wingless-type), and hypoxia (Mitogen-activated protein kinase)-and all connected by the common key regulatory factor Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1A-are deemed to be responsible for the metabolic shift and, consequently, NSC fate in physiological and pathological conditions.

Background: The management of acute postoperative pain after rotator cuff surgery can be challenging. To our knowledge, there are no data available in the literature correlating satisfactory pain control with improvement in terms of function. The purposes of the present study were to evaluate: 1) pain pattern after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair in patients operated with two different techniques (transosseous vs transosseous equivalent); 2) safety/efficacy of three different pharmacological pain control strategies; 3) possible relationship between a correct shoulder pain management protocol in the early post-operative period and patients' functional improvement.

Determining bacterial and fungal communities from low-biomass samples remains a challenge for high-throughput sequencing. Due to the low microbial load and host contamination, some sites, including the female upper reproductive tract and the lower respiratory tract, were even considered sterile until recent years. Despite efforts to improve sampling and DNA isolation protocols, some samples provide insufficient microbial DNA input for library preparation and sequencing.
