Background: In the analysis of survival data using the Cox proportional hazard model, it is assumed that the magnitude of mortality risk for a predictor variable remains proportional over time. The time-dependent linear model and the piece-wise proportional hazard model (two or four intervals) take into account the variation of the risk over the entire follow-up period.

Method: The three existing models were applied to a series of 266 patients with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), diagnosed between 1980 and 1992 and recorded by the Registry of Hematopoietic Neoplasms in Côte d'Or, France.

The case of a 11-year-old boy under anticoagulant therapy for a familial antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (SAAPF), who underwent surgery for a cerebrovascular malformation responsible for an intracerebral haematoma, is reported. Antivitamins K (AVK) were changed for unfractioned heparin (HNF), three days before. Heparin was discontinued two hours prior to surgery to obtain a normal peroperative coagulation.

Background: Post-traumatic thrombotic events are exceptional in the caval system. We report a case of inferior vena cava thrombosis in a traffic accident victim.

Case Report: A 53-year-old male victim of a traffic accident suffered multiple trauma including blunt trauma of the abdomen.

A collaborative study was carried out of the descriptive epidemiology of the lymphomas from seven countries across Europe in the period 1985-1992. Careful attention was paid to sources of information and the data quality in close collaboration with expert histopathologists. The data were classified as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and Hodgkin's disease (HD).

The EUROCLUS study assembled incidence data for 13,551 cases of childhood leukaemia (CL) diagnosed between 1980 and 1989 in 17 countries (or regions of countries). These were referenced by location at diagnosis to small census areas of which there were 25,723 in the study area. Population counts, surface area and, hence, population density were available for all these small areas.

Residential magnetic field (MF) measurements were performed for the first time in a representative sample of French dwellings. Exposure levels were assessed by two methods: indoor and outdoor measurements. Linear and logistic regression models were used to determine factors associated with the time-weighted average (TWA) home MF.

Langerhans cells histiocytosis (LCH) is a proliferative disorder of Langerhans cells. The lesions are normally characterized by infiltration of eosinophils, neutrophils, lymphocytes, plasma cells, and Langerhans cells. The specific cells of LCH contain Birbeck granules, express the phenotype of Langerhans cells but with markers fixed at an early stage of activation, and are functionally defective in antigen-presenting ability.

Controversies exist regarding the true incidence and significance of the histological association between melanocytic naevi and melanomas. The current study was undertaken to determine the incidence of melanocytic naevi histologically associated with melanomas, to compare the clinicopathological profiles of melanomas associated with a naevus (MN+) and melanomas not associated with a naevus (MN-), and to verify the interobserver reliability of classifying the naevus remnants as congenital or acquired. We evaluated 131 patients with invasive melanoma < or = 4 mm in thickness with a Clark's level < V.

We have assessed the potential clinical benefit of a new echo-Doppler device (Dynemo 3000) which provides a continuous measure of aortic blood flow (ABF) using an aortic flowmeter and a paediatric oesophageal probe, during repair of craniosynostosis in infants under general anaesthesia. The data recorded included: ABFi (i = indexed to body surface area), stroke volume (SVi), systemic vascular resistance (TSVRi), pre-ejection period (PEP), left ventricular ejection time (LVET), mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR) and central venous pressure (CVP). Data were collected: before (T1) and 3 min after skin incision (T2), at the time of maximal haemorrhage (T3) and at the end of the procedure (T4).

Background: Histopathologic association between melanocytic nevus and melanoma has been reported in approximately 10% to more than 50% of melanoma cases. Whether melanomas in contiguity with a nevus have a different natural history and pathogenesis from melanomas without a nevus is still to be determined.

Objective: The present study was undertaken to clarify whether melanocytic nevus-associated melanomas (MN[+]) have a different risk factor profile from cases without histopathologic evidence of melanocytic nevus association (MN[-]).

THE SURVIVAL CHAIN: The delay to restoration of spontaneous circulation is the key to prognosis of cardiac arrest occurring outside the hospital. Among the many etiologies of cardiac arrest, sudden onset ventricular fibrillation is the number one cause of sudden death in adults. Better prognosis depends on effective organisation founded on the concept of a "survival chain".

Data on 73,070 patients for seven major haematological malignancies diagnosed in Europe between 1985 and 1989 from 39 population-based cancer registries in 17 countries are included in the EUROCARE database. Relative survival was analysed by country and age between 1985 and 1989 and time trends were analysed from 1978-1989 for 13 countries which collaborated in EUROCARE for this entire period. The European weighted age-standardised 5-year relative survival rate was 72% for patients with Hodgkin's disease (HD, ranging from 45 to 76% in 13 countries), 63% for chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL, range 51-79%, 14 countries), 46% for patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL, range 25-63%, 17 countries), 31% for patients with chronic myelocytic leukaemia (CML, range 8-40%, 13 countries), 28% for patients with multiple myeloma (MM, range 18-36%, 14 countries), 25% for patients with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL, range 19-33%, 7 countries) and 10% for patients with acute myeloblastic leukaemia (AML, range 4-15%, 11 countries).

Background: Melanoma thickness measured according to the Breslow method is used to determine surgical margin and in patient selection for sentinel node biopsy. Previous studies did not confirm the reliability of melanoma palpability for clinical prediction of tumor thickness. Recently we reported the usefulness of epiluminescence microscopy (dermatoscopy) for in vivo detection of the phases of melanoma progression, as well as tumor depth.

The aim of this study was to analyse the reliability and the inter-observer agreement of dermoscopy in the diagnosis of melanocytic skin lesions. Nine dermatologists, with a different training experience and who routinely used dermoscopy in different hospitals in Italy, evaluated clinical and dermoscopy photographs of 15 melanocytic lesions (four invasive melanomas, four histologically common naevi, and seven naevi with histological atypia). A further series of dermoscopic photographs of 40 melanocytic lesions was evaluated to quantify inter-observer concordance in recognizing dermoscopic criteria.
