Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent mental health condition affecting millions worldwide, leading to disability and reduced quality of life. MDD poses a global health priority due to its early onset and association with other disabling conditions. Available treatments for MDD exhibit varying effectiveness, and a substantial portion of individuals remain resistant to treatment.

Riboceine Rescues Auranofin-Induced Craniofacial Defects in Zebrafish.

Craniofacial abnormalities are a common group of congenital developmental disorders that can require intensive oral surgery as part of their treatment. Neural crest cells (NCCs) contribute to the facial structures; however, they are extremely sensitive to high levels of oxidative stress, which result in craniofacial abnormalities under perturbed developmental environments. The oxidative stress-inducing compound auranofin (AFN) disrupts craniofacial development in wildtype zebrafish embryos.

Development of a Canine Care and Welfare Knowledge Scale: Implications for Welfare and Preventing Dogfighting.

The objective of this study was to develop a Canine Care and Welfare Knowledge (CCWK) Scale for use in educational intervention development and evaluation and validate the instrument. The study population was 504 children, aged 11 to 19 years old, from Detroit, MI. In this cross-sectional study, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used for scale development.

A Detailed Immunohistochemical Analysis of a Large Series of Cervical and Vaginal Gastric-type Adenocarcinomas.

Adenocarcinomas exhibiting gastric differentiation represent a recently described and uncommon subtype of non-human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cervical adenocarcinoma. They comprise a spectrum from a well-differentiated variant (adenoma malignum/mucinous variant of minimal deviation adenocarcinoma) to a more poorly differentiated overtly malignant form, generally referred to as gastric-type adenocarcinoma. Rarely, such tumors have also been described as primary vaginal neoplasms.

Embryonic oxidative stress results in reproductive impairment for adult zebrafish.

Exposure to environmental stressors during embryo development can have long-term effects on the adult organism. This study used the thioredoxin reductase inhibitor auranofin to investigate the consequences of oxidative stress during zebrafish development. Auranofin at low doses triggered upregulation of the antioxidant genes gstp1 and prdx1.

Juvenile granulosa cell tumor arising in ovarian adenosarcoma: an unusual form of sarcomatous overgrowth.

We report 2 ovarian neoplasms in women aged 58 and 69 years composed of an admixture of adenosarcoma and a predominant stromal component morphologically and immunohistochemically in keeping with juvenile granulosa cell tumor. As far as we are aware, this association has not been reported previously. We speculate that, in both cases, the juvenile granulosa cell tumor component arose from the adenosarcoma as an unusual form of sarcomatous overgrowth of sex cord elements.

Bacterial and fungal microflora on the external genitalia of male donkeys (Equus asinus).

This study was undertaken to investigate the bacterial and fungal microflora on the external genitalia of a population of healthy male donkeys in the state of Michigan, USA. The aim was to identify and determine the frequency of occurrence of these microorganisms using seven different isolation media and standard microbiological procedures. The sites (urethral fossa [fossa glandis], dorsal diverticulum of the urethral sinus, distal urethra, and penile surface) in the distal reproductive tract were cultured and each isolated microorganism identified.

Prevalence and persistence of Taylorella asinigenitalis in male donkeys.

This study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of Taylorella asinigenitalis in a subset of the donkey population of Michigan and in other equids on farms on which the organism was identified. Other aims were to further characterize the carrier state in terms of persistence and preferred sites of colonization of T. asinigenitalis in the male donkey as well as determine the genotype of any isolates of the organism.

Persistence of serum antibodies to Sarcocystis neurona in horses moved from North America to India.

Background: The study reported here was undertaken to assess the presence of antibodies to Sarcocystis neurona in the serum of horses of North American origin that had been relocated for 1 year or more to India (ie, outside of the known endemic areas for S. neurona).

Hypothesis: The presence or absence of such antibodies should provide information concerning the persistence of such antibodies, or support the presence of chronic infection, or both.

Association of sex of fetus, sire, month of conception, or year of foaling with duration of gestation in standardbred mares.

Objective: To determine whether sex of fetus, sire, month of conception, or year of foaling was associated with duration of gestation in mares.

Design: Epidemiologic retrospective cohort study.

Animals: 500 foalings for 296 Standardbred mares.

Evaluation of transabdominal ultrasound-guided amniocentesis in the late gestational mare.

Serial transabdominal amniocentesis was performed on eight mares in late gestation. Ultrasonography was used to identify the two placental fluid sacs and the foetus. A biopsy guide attached to the transducer allowed visualisation of the needle path during insertion.

Characterization of Gardnerella vaginalis and G. vaginalis-like organisms from the reproductive tract of the mare.

Gardnerella vaginalis has been isolated from women with bacterial vaginosis, from the genital tracts of asymptomatic women, and from several other infected body sites in humans. However, until recently, it has not been isolated from any other animal species. Between June 1988 and October 1989, 31 isolates identified as G.

Double cervices in two llamas.

Double cervices were diagnosed in 2 female llamas that were infertile. The condition is uncommon in other species. The condition results from the failure of fusion of the müllerian ducts during embryonic development.

Isolation of Gardnerella vaginalis from the reproductive tract of four mares.

A gram-variable pleomorphic bacillus was isolated from the reproductive tracts of 4 mares during routine prebreeding soundness examinations. Using a commercial bacterial identification system, these organisms were identified as Streptococcus acidominimus. However, colonial and Gram-staining characteristics did not support this identification.

Recurrent torsion of the spermatic cord and scrotal testis in a stallion.

A stallion was twice referred for evaluation of scrotal swelling and signs of pain. The first admission followed a 3-year period of recurrent signs of left-sided scrotal pain and swelling. After the removal of the left testis because of testicular torsion, the stallion was returned to service.

Commentary on the replacement of neurons in the central nervous system.

A theory is proposed by which the replacement of neurons in the central nervous system might take place. The theory is based on our present knowledge of neuroanatomy.

Aztreonam for injection (lyophilized): development of an automated solution batching process utilizing volumetric powder feeders.

As part of a commitment to fully automate the manufacture of a lyophilized dosage form of Azactam (Aztreonam for Injection), an automated solution batching procedure was developed. The lyophilization process requires solution batching of Aztreonam and L-arginine, the two constituents of the product. To avoid preblending of aztreonam and L-arginine prior to dissolution, a batching process was developed which makes use of two separate volumetric powder feeders.

INTRACEREBRAL HEMORRHAGE IN A BOTTLENOSED DOLPHIN ( Tursiops truncatus ).

A neurologic condition closely resembling a common human disease, hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage, is described in a captive dolphin. Motor deficits and the possibiltiy that behavioral changes resulted in the animal's being attacked and driven off by its herdmates, are discussed in terms of damage resulting from the hemorrhagic lesion.

Subacute necrotizing encephalopathy (Leigh's disease): two unusual cases.

Two unusual cases of subacute necrotizing encephalopathy are described. In one, a marked hirsutism led to a suspicion of adrenal tumor or other endocrinopathy. In the other case, there was an agenesis of the corpus callosum, the second instance in which a malformation of the corpus callosum was associated with this condition.
