Background: The severity of endoscopic recurrence during the first year after intestinal resection for Crohn's disease is predictive of clinical recurrence. The aim of our study was to assess the impact of the implementation of an ileocolonoscopy during the first year after surgery on surgical recurrence.

Methods: All patients who underwent a first intestinal resection for Crohn's disease between 1992 and 2018 at the University Hospital of Liège were retrospectively included.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how intestinal fibrosis in Crohn's disease (CD) is linked to epithelial cells, focusing on the role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and specific proteins, particularly AGR2.
  • - Researchers analyzed the proteome of intestinal surface epithelium from areas of fibrosis and confirmed findings through immunohistochemistry in various CD and control samples.
  • - Results indicate that ER stress in epithelial cells leads to increased AGR2 secretion, which promotes the differentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, contributing to the development of strictures in CD.

Background: Despite recent advances in colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosis and population screening programs, the identification of patients with preneoplastic lesions or with early CRC stages remains challenging and is important for reducing CRC incidence and increasing patient's survival.

Methods: We analysed 76 colorectal tissue samples originated from early CRC stages, normal or inflamed mucosa by -. The characterisation of three selected biomarker candidates was performed by immunohistochemistry on an independent set of precancerous and cancerous lesions harbouring increasing CRC stages.
