Purpose: The Cancer Genome Atlas Research Network identified Epstein-Barr-Virus (EBV)-positive gastric cancer as a distinct molecular subtype. The prevalence is 8-9% and the histological examination shows pronounced lymphocytic infiltration, elevated levels of IFN-γ and consequently overexpression of PD-L1. The role of plasma EBV DNA load as a prognostic factor in patients with this cancer subtype is still to be defined.

Only patients with mismatch repair (MMR) deficient CRC showing microsatellite instability and hyper-mutated tumors can obtain clinical benefits from current immune checkpoint blockades; on the other hand, immune- or target-based therapeutic strategies are very limited for subjects with mismatch repair proficient CRC (CRC). Here, we report a comprehensive typing of immune infiltrating cells in CRC.

Methods: This is an ancillary study which included 47 patients of the GASTRODOC trial. The dedicated pathologists of each Institute were invited to revise all the lymph nodes included in the surgical specimens in order to classify the regression according to the grading system proposed by Tsekrekos et al.
We discuss two cases of congenital airway malformations seen in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The aim is to report extremely rare events characterized by immediate respiratory distress after delivery and the impossibility to ventilate and intubate the airway. The first case is a male twin born at 34 weeks by emergency caesarean section.

These non-IBD colitides include infectious colitis, microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, eosinophilic colitis, autoimmune enterocolitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticulosis, drug-induced colitis, radiation colitis and diversion colitis. The diagnosis of these different disease entities relies on the histopathological examination of endoscopic biopsies of the gastrointestinal tract.

Patients with primary hyperparathyroidism have high concentrations of serum calcium or high concentrations of parathyroid hormone, or incorrect parathyroid hormone levels for serum calcium values. Primary hyperparathyroidism is due to the presence of an adenoma/single-gland disease in 80-85%.

Some characteristics of nodal metastases can increase the risk of recurrence. We attempted to quantify the impact on survival of nodal factors included in the American Thyroid Association (ATA) risk stratification system in N1b patients with DTC.

We report the case of a 28-year-old woman who experienced general weakness, hyperemesis gravidarum and hypercalcemia at 11 weeks of gestation. Corresponding to hypercalcemia, we found inappropriately elevated parathyroid hormone levels.

The aim of our review is to offer an alternative simpler histologic and endoscopic approach to these lesions for a more correct relationship between endoscopists and pathologists.

This cross-sectional study was performed among 43 women treated for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) between January 2014 and January 2017 at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Spedali Civili's Hospital, Brescia, Italy. Pap smear and cervical samples for HPV tests were collected during the follow-up visit.

Methods: We enrolled 41 patients treated with curative gastrectomy for pT2-4aN0 gastric carcinoma between 1992 and 2010, who developed recurrence (Group 1). We retrospectively selected this group from the prospectively collected database of 4 centers belonging to the Italian Research Group for Gastric Cancer, and compared them with 437 pT2-4aN0 patients without recurrence (Group 2).
A 46-year-old man with papillary thyroid cancer post total thyroidectomy was referred for post radioiodine (I) whole-body scan. Whole-body images revealed intense I uptake in the bed thyroid and a focal abnormal uptake in the testicular area. Subsequent SPECT/CT demonstrated that the focal uptake corresponded to the left epididymis, and the pathology report revealed a spermatocele with no immunohistochemical features for thyroid tissue.

A colonoscopy, a magnetic resonance imaging scan, a positron emission tomography scan, and a computed tomography scan completed the preoperative workup: a neoplastic lesion 4.3×3 cm in size was diagnosed at segments IV and V, associated with a neoplastic involvement of the splenic flexure without signs of colonic occlusion.

Methods: Patients younger than 50 years old undergoing colorectal resection for cancer in the period 1994-2007 were identified (Group A, 49 cases), and compared to a group of randomly selected patients more than 50 (Group B, 85 cases). In 31 group A patients, immunohistochemical expression analysis of MLH1, MSH2 and MSH6 was performed; personal and familial history of patients with defective MMR proteins expression was further investigated, searching for synchronous and metachronous tumors in probands and their families.
Multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) is a rare autosomal recessively inherited disorder of fatty acid metabolism due to ETFA, ETFB or ETFDH mutations. Riboflavin treatment ameliorates symptoms and metabolic profile in ETFDH-related MADD patients. We report on a 20-year-old boy with an 8-year history of progressive difficulty in walking, running and climbing stairs.

Mitochondrial diseases (MD) are disorders caused by an impairment of the mitochondrial respiratory chain function. They are usually progressive, isolated or multi-system diseases and have variable times of onset. Because mitochondria have their own DNA (mtDNA), MD can be caused by mutations in both mtDNA and nuclear DNA (nDNA).

Methods: Retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected Western series of IPMN.
Results: Forty cases of IPMN were analysed (1992-2007).
A 65-year-old man with a colonic adenocarcinoma and a single small liver nodule underwent surgery. The nodule showed the histological features of a bile duct adenoma. Large eosinophilic, periodic acid-Schiff-positive diastase-resistant intracytoplasmic globules conferred a signet-ring appearance to the cells.

CL-4 was consistently negative in normal and reactive mesothelium, as well as in all 82 mesotheliomas. In contrast, strong reactivity was found in 57/58 serosal metastasis, and in 245/278 primary carcinomas, with uppermost expression (150/153) in those most frequently involved in the differential with mesothelioma (lung, breast, gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, ovary, primary serous papillary carcinoma of peritoneum).

Methods: Telomerase gene expression was investigated by means of hTERT/RT-PCR on total RNA from peripheral blood, tumour and non-tumour pancreatic samples of 2 patients with IPMT.
Results: Histological diagnosis was mild-grade dysplasia in the first case and invasive carcinoma in the second.
Background/aim: The efficacy of adjuvant treatment in node-negative colorectal carcinoma is unproven. The purpose of this study was to analyze the prognostic value of routinely detectable clinicopathological variables in order to identify subgroups of node-negative colorectal cancer patients at a high risk of a recurrence.
Methods: Seventy-three patients who did not receive radio- or chemotherapy were selected among 112 node-negative colorectal cancer patients who underwent curative resection.
