Purpose: The objective of this study is to review the accuracy of an augmented reality navigational guidance system designed to facilitate improved visualization, guidance, and accuracy during percutaneous needle-based procedures including biopsies and ablations.
Approach: Using the HoloLens 2, the system registers and projects 3D CT-based models of segmented anatomy along with live ultrasound, fused with electromagnetically tracked instruments including ultrasound probes and needles, giving the operator comprehensive stereoscopic visualization for intraoperative planning and navigation during procedures.Tracked needles were guided to targets implanted in a cadaveric model using the system.
Background: Remediation involves formalized support for surgical trainees with significant underperformance to return to expected standards. There is a need to understand current evidence of remediation for surgical trainees to inform practice and justify investment of resources.
Methods: Following the principles of a systematic review, we conducted a narrative analysis to make recommendations for remediation of underperforming surgical trainees.
Objective: Surgical trainees with significant underperformance require formal support to return to an expected standard, termed remediation. The aim of this scoping review was to define remediation interventions, approaches, and contexts.
Design: Following scoping review protocols, we set out to identify the evidence-base for remediation of surgical trainees, outline key concepts and uncover areas to stimulate further research.
A label-free electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) aptasensor for rapid detection (<35 min) of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) was fabricated by immobilizing a RNA aptamer capture probe (ACP), selective to IFN-γ, on a gold interdigitated electrode array (Au IDE). This study reports the first case of the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into Schwann cell (SC)-like phenotypes through the application of electrical stimuli from a graphene-based electrode. Micro unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) need to house propulsion mechanisms that are small in size but sufficiently powerful to deliver on-demand acceleration for tight radius turns, burst-driven docking maneuvers, and low-speed course corrections. We aimed to determine the prevalence of clinically relevant fatigue (CRF) and its associations in outpatients with various cancer diagnoses.
Patients And Methods: A survey of outpatients with colorectal, breast, gynaecological, genitourinary, sarcoma, melanoma and miscellaneous tumours at a regional cancer centre.
Objective: Inflammatory cells can both suppress and stimulate tumour growth and their influence on clinical outcome in cancer patients has been studied in various cancer types. Here we have investigated their influence on outcome in primary epithelial ovarian cancer.
Study Design: Serum white blood cell numbers according to subtype were recorded prior to treatment in 136 patients with primary epithelial ovarian cancer.
To: (1) estimate the prevalence of clinically significant emotional distress in patients attending a cancer outpatient department and (2) determine the associations between distress and demographic and clinical variables, we conducted a survey of outpatients attending selected clinics of a regional cancer centre in Edinburgh, UK. Patients completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) on touch-screen computers and the scores were linked to clinical variables on the hospital database. Nearly one quarter of the cancer outpatients 674 out of 3071 (22%; 95% confidence interval (CI) 20-23%) met our criterion for clinically significant emotional distress (total HADS score 15 or more).

Background: Studies on cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2A6 suggest that genotype affects the rate of nicotine metabolism and, consequently, cigarette consumption. However, known alleles of CYP2A6 associated with fast or slow metabolism are relatively uncommon, and there remains considerable variation in metabolic activity among those with presumed wild-type CYP2A6 alleles, suggesting that other genetic or environmental factors also influence the rate of nicotine metabolism.
Methods: We investigated determinants of the rate of nicotine metabolism and effects on smoking behavior in a United Kingdom cohort who participated in a placebo-controlled trial of smoking cessation via nicotine replacement therapy.
Objective: To examine the impact of a brief patient decision aid (pDA) on men's knowledge, attitudes and intention to have a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test. To explore the important predictors of intention to be tested in men who received the brief pDA.
Methods: A brief pDA designed to facilitate informed decision-making for men considering PSA testing was developed for the NHS Prostate Cancer Risk Management Programme.
A retrospective analysis of children with first relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), treated on the UKALL R2 protocol at four different hospitals, between June 1995 and December 2002 was performed. Of the 150 children 139 (93%) achieved a second complete remission. The overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS) for the whole group was 56% and 47% respectively.
