Background: The association of overall cardiovascular health (CVH) with changes in DNA methylation (DNAm) has not been well characterized.
Methods: We calculated the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 (LE8) score to reflect CVH in five cohorts with diverse ancestry backgrounds. Epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) for LE8 score were conducted, followed by bioinformatic analyses.

Individuals with AUD experience high morbidity and increased mortality. Nurses practicing in acute care are ideally positioned to deliver quality interventions to patients with AUD, including screening and brief intervention; formal training and assessment of baseline knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions are necessary.

While education programs exist to teach these skills, there are limited patient assessments to evaluate their efficacy. We aimed to develop and evaluate cirrhosis knowledge assessments for patients with compensated and decompensated cirrhosis.

In this review, the physiological relevance of IOP is detailed, alongside its potential pathological consequences. The review further delves into innovative engineering solutions for IOP monitoring, highlighting the latest advancements in wearable and implantable sensors and their potential in enhancing glaucoma management.

Methods: We used an iterative process that was guided by the Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR) patient engagement framework in describing patient engagement activities to partner with a team of 16 patients and caregivers (Patient Advisory Team (PAT)). This process included five phases: a) Prioritize and gather content, b) design and build the website and videos, c) gather and integrate feedback, d) improve user accessibility, and e) assess usability and knowledge uptake for users.
Background: Standardized order sets are a means of increasing adherence to clinical practice guidelines and improving the quality of patient care. Implementation of novel quality improvement initiatives like order sets can be challenging. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we conducted a formative evaluation to understand healthcare providers' perspectives on implementing clinical changes and the individual, collective and organizational contextual factors that might impact implementation at eight hospital sites in Alberta, Canada.

Pharmacotherapy includes β-adrenergic receptor agonists such as mirabegron; however, mirabegron contains a label warning for cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6 inhibition, making coadministration with CYP2D6 substrates require monitoring and dose adjustment to avoid unintended increases in substrate concentration.
Objective: To understand the codispensing patterns of mirabegron among patients using ten predefined CYP2D6 substrates with and before mirabegron dispensing.
Over the past decade, the field of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy has exhibited rapid growth. Due to their regenerative, reparatory, and immunomodulatory capacities, MSCs have been widely investigated as therapeutic agents in the cell-based treatment of chronic ophthalmic pathologies. However, the applicability of MSC-based therapy is limited by suboptimal biocompatibility, penetration, and delivery to the target ocular tissues.

While many advances have been made to learn these representations, it is still unclear how to quantify disentanglement. While several metrics exist, little is known on their implicit assumptions, what they truly measure, and their limits.

Study aims were to assess (i) driving competency through the use of an in-office computerized battery and on-road driving assessment (DriveABLE) and (ii) the association between minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE), in-office paper-pencil tools, and additional measures (e.g.

Aims: The aim of this study was to systematically identify and summarize the validity of International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes for identifying patients with cirrhosis in administrative data.
Traditionally, outpatient visits for those with chronic liver disease (CLD) have been delivered in-person with the patient traveling to a centralized location to see the health care provider. The use of virtual care in health care delivery has been gaining popularity across a variety of patient populations, especially within the COVID-19 context. Performed before COVID-19, the aim of the present study was to explore the perspectives of patients with CLD toward the use of virtual care with their liver specialists.

Using data from the multidisciplinary outpatient Cirrhosis Care Clinic (CCC) at the University of Alberta Hospital, we aimed to evaluate acute care utilization and survival outcomes of patients followed by the CCC compared with those receiving standard care (SC).
Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of 212 patients with cirrhosis admitted to University of Alberta Hospital between 2014 and 2015.
Background: Liver cirrhosis is a leading cause of morbidity, premature mortality and acute care utilization in patients with digestive disease. In the province of Alberta, hospital readmission rates for patients with cirrhosis are estimated at 44% at 90 days. For hospitalized patients, multiple care gaps exist, the most notable stemming from i) the lack of a structured approach to best practice care for cirrhosis complications, ii) the lack of a structured approach to broader health needs and iii) suboptimal preparation for transition of care into the community.

Notably, unlike the GCD, the PD can be self-initiated independent of a health practitioner. Two years after the campaign, we aimed to assess knowledge and recall of participation in ACP among cirrhosis patients.

Methods: This prospective randomized crossover trial allocated 76 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, normotensive glaucoma, or ocular hypertension in a 1:1 ratio to start with either generic Sandoz travoprost or Travatan Z.

Aim: To investigate patient experiences and perceptions of advance care planning (ACP) process in cirrhosis.
Methods: Purposive sampling was used to identify and recruit participants (N = 17) from discrete patient groups: compensated with no prior decompensation, decompensated and not yet listed for transplant, transplant wait listed, medical contraindications for transplant, and low socioeconomic status. Review and discussion of local ACP videos, documents, and experiences with ACP occurred in two individual interviews and four focus groups.
Cirrhosis patients have reduced peak aerobic power (peak VO) that is associated with reduced survival. Supervised exercise training increases exercise tolerance. The effect of home-based exercise training (HET) in cirrhosis is unknown.

In cirrhosis, uptake and adoption of these practices have been limited with physicians citing many perceived barriers and limitations. Recognizing the many tangible benefits of ACP and GCD processes in patients with life-limiting chronic diseases, the onus is on health practitioners to initiate and direct these conversations with their patients and surrogates.

Background And Aims: Current guidelines recommend antibiotic prophylaxis in all patients presenting with cirrhosis and acute variceal hemorrhage (AVH). We aimed to evaluate the characteristics and clinical impact of "early" infections (developing within 14 days) of AVH in a real-world setting.
Methods: We analyzed retrospective data from a cohort of 371 adult patients with cirrhosis and AVH all of whom had received antibiotic prophylaxis (74% men; mean age 56 years), admitted to tertiary care hospitals in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Barcelona, Spain.
Purpose: To report a case of diffuse intraocular lens (IOL) opacification in a patient who started complaining of blurred vision in his left eye over the course of three years after having phacoemulsification surgery combined with capsular bag fixation of a C-flex 570C IOL. The IOL had been repositioned in the ciliary sulcus following its subluxation.
Method: An IOL exchange was performed, and the explanted IOL was sent for histopathological analysis.
