Understanding the movements and mortality of individuals across different life stages is crucial for the effective conservation of wild populations. We used data from 32 Egyptian vultures () tagged with GPS transmitters as nestlings in three Iberian breeding areas to study their dependence period, migration routes, movements in Africa, and mortality at each stage. Our results show no significant differences in the timing of nest departure or the duration of the dependence period between individuals of different sexes or breeding nuclei.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the relationship between the number of primary care consultations and the time taken from initial presentation to cancer diagnosis in emergency cases compared to nonemergency cases.
  • It found a strong correlation in emergency patients where a higher number of consultations often resulted in longer diagnostic intervals, particularly for certain cancer types like pancreatic and lung cancers.
  • The results indicate a need for system-level interventions to minimize delays in diagnosis for cancer patients who have had multiple consultations prior to emergency referral.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare infection rates and risk factors in kidney transplant recipients who underwent robotic-assisted kidney transplantation (RAKT) versus traditional open surgery from January 2016 to December 2019.
  • The research included 94 RAKT patients and 84 open surgery controls, finding that 35% of recipients experienced infections, with asymptomatic bacteriuria being the most common.
  • Results indicated that open surgery had a higher infection rate (43% vs. 27%, p=0.04), while factors like needing post-transplant urologic procedures, high BMI, and acute allograft rejection increased infection risk, whereas RAKT and the JJ catheter were protective.

COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) has emerged as a frequent complication in the intensive care unit (ICU). However, little is known about this life-threatening fungal superinfection in solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs), including whether targeted anti-mold prophylaxis might be justified in this immunosuppressed population. We performed a multicentric observational retrospective study of all consecutive ICU-admitted COVID-19 SOTRs between August 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021.

Citrus fruits are characterized by a complex mixture of volatiles making up their characteristic aromas, being the d-limonene the most abundant one. However, its role on citrus fruit and juice odor is controversial. Transgenic oranges engineered for alterations in the presence or concentration of few related chemical groups enable asking precise questions about their contribution to overall odor, either positive or negative, as perceived by the human nose.

The effect of the 2 common consumption temperatures, refrigeration temperature (10°C) and room temperature (22°C), on the viscoelasticity, mechanical properties, and perceived texture of commercial cream cheeses was studied. Two samples with different fat contents, regular and low fat, from each of 4 selected commercial brands were analyzed. The selection criteria were based on identification of brands with different percentages of fat content reduction between the regular- and low-fat samples (35, 50, 84, and 98.

The device-specific needlestick injury (NSI) rate provides a means of comparing rates of injury between work sites and institutions over time. We performed a retrospective study of intravenous and percutaneous injection NSI at a large military teaching hospital using electronic purchase records and occupational NSI exposure forms to define action levels for process improvements. A rate of 2.
