Article Synopsis
  • - Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) play a crucial role in innate immunity and have various functions, making them promising alternatives to traditional antibiotics, especially as antibiotic resistance rises.
  • - The study discovered a new peptide, AXOTL-13, using transcriptome data, confirmed its antibacterial properties through PCR and synthesis, and found it effectively inhibits bacterial growth without harming red blood cells.
  • - This research is groundbreaking in identifying and evaluating the antimicrobial activity of peptides, specifically AXOTL-13, and it lays the groundwork for future studies in the field.

Kidney transplantation (KT) is associated with a substantial risk of postoperative complications (POC) for which performant predictors are lacking. Data showed that a perioperative gain of weight (ΔWeight) was associated with higher risk of POC, but it remains unexplored in KT. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the association between ΔWeight and POC after KT.

Purpose: There is insufficient evidence on the management of refractory status epilepticus (RSE) and super-RSE (SRSE). Ketamine is a N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonist in the treatment of these entities. Our objectives were to study the effectiveness and safety of ketamine in the treatment of adult patients with RSE and SRSE, to determine the factors that can influence the response to ketamine, and to explore its use in patients without mechanical ventilation.

The purpose of this chapter is to evaluate DNA damage during axolotl tail regeneration using an alkaline comet assay. Our method details the isolation of cells from regenerating and non-regenerating tissues and the isolation of peripheral blood for single-cell gel electrophoresis. Also, we detail each of the steps for the development of the comet assay technique which includes mounting the isolated cells on an agarose matrix, alkaline electrophoresis, and DNA damage detection.

Introduction: Peristomal complications are frequently neglected by surgeons. Our aim was to assess peristomal complications occurring within 30 days after surgery and identify predictive risk factors.

Methods: All patients who underwent stoma creation from January 2014 to June 2016 in our institution were included unless patients who died, had their stoma reversed or were lost to follow-up.

Congenital malformations of the inferior vena cava (IVC) are rare and underreported. They can be a risk factor for deep venous thrombosis (DVT) as a result of inadequate venous drainage of the lower extremities through collateral circulation. The significant number of cases reported in the literature highlights their importance, warranting investigating their existence in younger individuals with idiopathic DVT of the lower extremities and pelvic veins.

Background: Neurobehçet disease (NBD) is a rare complication of Behçet disease (BD) but with important burdens of morbidity and mortality. Little is known about this complication because there are no validated diagnostic criteria, and all the studies have small number of patients. The prevalence reported normally ranges between 5% and 15% and it is more frequent amongst men between 20 and 40 years old.

Several mathematical models of rabbit ventricular action potential (AP) have been proposed to investigate mechanisms of arrhythmias and excitation-contraction coupling. Our study aims at systematically characterizing how ionic current properties modulate the main cellular biomarkers of arrhythmic risk using two widely-used rabbit ventricular models, and comparing simulation results using the two models with experimental data available for rabbit. A sensitivity analysis of AP properties, Ca²⁺ and Na⁺ dynamics, and their rate dependence to variations (±15% and ±30%) in the main transmembrane current conductances and kinetics was performed using the Shannon et al.

Experimental studies of pro-arrhythmic mechanisms are scarcely performed in humans due to the limited availability of human cardiomyocytes. Subsequently, extrapolation of animal experimental research to humans is widely extended. Our aim is to systematically compare the ionic mechanisms of the main cellular biomarkers of arrhythmic risk between human and rabbit using computer simulations.
