The extravascular implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (EV-ICD, Aurora, Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA) has recently been validated as a new device for preventing arrhythmic death with the aim of reducing vascular and mechanical complications of transvenous ICDs and overcoming the limitations of subcutaneous ICDs. A dedicated learning program is required and, in addition to the electrophysiologist, the implantation procedure must be performed with the assistance of an anesthesiologist for general anesthesia induction and, especially in the early stages of training, a cardiothoracic surgeon for assistance during access to the retrosternal space where the lead should be placed. The objective of this case series is to describe the experience at our high-volume hospital where we treated the first 10 patients with the Aurora EV-ICD device over a period of 8 months.

Glucuronoyl esterases (GEs) are serine-type hydrolase enzymes belonging to carbohydrate esterase family 15 (CE15), and they play a central role in the reduction of recalcitrance in plant cell walls by cleaving ester linkages between glucuronoxylan and lignin in lignocellulose. Recent studies have suggested that bacterial CE15 enzymes are more heterogeneous in terms of sequence, structure, and substrate preferences than their fungal counterparts. However, the sequence space of bacterial GEs has still not been fully explored, and further studies on diverse enzymes could provide novel insights into new catalysts of biotechnological interest.

Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is a heart disease characterized by a fibrotic replacement of myocardial tissue and a consequent predisposition to ventricular arrhythmic events, especially in the young. Post-mortem studies and the subsequent diffusion of cardiac MRI have shown that left ventricular involvement in arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy is common and often develops early. Liver steatosis is an increasing health issue with few therapeutic options, partly because of a paucity of experimental models. In humanized liver rodent models, abnormal lipid accumulation in transplanted human hepatocytes occurs spontaneously. Here, we demonstrate that this abnormality is associated with compromised interleukin-6 (IL-6)-glycoprotein 130 (GP130) signaling in human hepatocytes because of incompatibility between host rodent IL-6 and human IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) on donor hepatocytes.
