Purpose: This study examined the relationship between patient-perceived vocal effort (VE) using a 100-mm visual analog scale (VE-VAS) and the OMNI Vocal Effort Scale (OMNI-VES) when measures were obtained after a vocal activity. A second purpose was to evaluate how VE related to other voice assessment measures.

Method: Fifty-three speakers with adductor laryngeal dystonia (ADLD) provided speech recordings.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of two videolaryngostroboscopic rating tools in distinguishing between normal speakers and those with varying degrees of dysphonia (voice disorders).
  • Sixteen VLS exams from both normophonic and dysphonic speakers were evaluated by clinicians, focusing on several vocal fold parameters using two different rating methods.
  • Results showed meaningful differences in VLS ratings between controls and those with moderate-severe dysphonia, while the ability to differentiate between mildly dysphonic and normal speakers was less clear, especially with one of the rating tools.

Purpose: Variability in auditory-perceptual ratings of voice limits their utility, with the poorest reliability often noted for vocal strain. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an experimental method, called visual sort and rate (VSR), promoted stronger rater reliability than visual analog scale (VAS), for ratings of strain in two clinical populations: adductor laryngeal dystonia (ADLD) and vocal hyperfunction (VH).

Method: Connected speech samples from speakers with ADLD and VH as well as age- and sex-matched controls were selected from a database.
