The onset of depressive symptoms during pregnancy or the first year postpartum, termed perinatal depression, occurs in approximately 15 percent of women. Perinatal depression can have a significant negative impact on health outcomes for the mother and her infant including maternal emotional distress and parenting difficulties and infant behavioral and developmental problems. Nurses caring for patients in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are in a key position to affect positive change in the lives of families affected by perinatal depression.

Every day parents make choices about the source of water their families consume. There are many contributing factors which could affect decisions about water consumption including taste, smell, color, safety, cost, and convenience. Nurses at the bedside have widely varied educational backgrounds. Most bedside nurses have insufficient knowledge in the area of ethical decision-making to feel confident in their ability to participate in ethical decision-making along with the health care team. Continuing education programs for staff nurses should focus on ethical decision-making to empower bedside nurses to participate.
