Cancer cells undergo remarkable metabolic changes to meet their high energetic and biosynthetic demands. The Warburg effect is the most well-characterized metabolic alteration, driving cancer cells to catabolize glucose through aerobic glycolysis to promote proliferation. Another prominent metabolic hallmark of cancer cells is their increased reliance on glutamine to replenish tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle intermediates essential for ATP production, aspartate and fatty acid synthesis, and maintaining redox homeostasis.

  • Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a critical role in diseases like neurodegeneration, especially during events like oxygen-glucose deprivation followed by reoxygenation.
  • In a study on HT22 cells, melatonin was found to protect mitochondria from damage and oxidative stress caused by this OGD/R condition, maintaining important enzymatic functions.
  • Melatonin not only lowered inflammatory markers related to mitochondrial damage but also enhanced the release of fibroblast growth factor-21, suggesting its potential as a protective agent in ischemic brain injury.

Background: Mitochondrial alterations play a crucial role in the development and progression of cancer. Dysfunctional mitochondria contribute to the acquisition of key hallmarks of cancer, including sustained proliferative signaling, evasion of growth suppressors, and resistance to cell death. Consequently, targeting mitochondrial dysfunction has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) services help heart disease patients improve their health and reduce future risks, but mental health issues like depression and anxiety are common among these patients, which traditional treatments often don’t adequately address.
  • The PATHWAY trial showed that adding group Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) to CR significantly benefits anxiety and depression, leading to plans for implementing MCT in NHS through specialized CR sites and evaluating its effects.
  • The study will gather data on adoption rates, patient characteristics, and mental health outcomes, while also identifying challenges and resources needed for successful integration of MCT into standard CR practices.

Introduction: Burns and other injuries requiring plastic and/or reconstructive surgery (BPRS) are lifechanging, often unexpected, and increase the risk of psychiatric morbidity. There are no published studies we are aware of that explores the applicability of psychological models to BPRS patients. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is the benchmark treatment in mental health but may be less effective in physical health settings.

Background: Psychological difficulties are prevalent in patients undergoing Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR). Recent guidelines recommend that practitioners inquire and address patients' psychological concerns during CR. Therefore, Study One aimed to explore practitioners' understanding of patients' psychological needs, their confidence in supporting those needs, and their views on whether current CR meets patients' needs.

ɣ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a four‑carbon amino acid acting as the main inhibitory transmitter in the invertebrate and vertebrate nervous systems. The metabolism of GABA is well compartmentalized in the cell and the uptake of cytosolic GABA into the mitochondrial matrix is required for its degradation. A previous study carried out in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster indicated that the mitochondrial aspartate/glutamate carrier (AGC) is responsible for mitochondrial GABA accumulation.

Background: As hypothesized in the Self-Regulatory Executive Function (S-REF) model, metacognitive beliefs are associated with anxiety and depression in adults. An important question is the extent to which such effects are present in children and adolescents, with the implication that the model may also apply to young people. The aim of this meta-analysis was to synthesize results on the nature and magnitude of associations between metacognitive beliefs and anxiety and depression in children and adolescents.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) naturally occurs as a biopolymer in the human body, primarily in connective tissues like joints and skin. Functioning as a vital element of synovial fluid, it lubricates joints, facilitating fluid movement and diminishing bone friction to protect articular well-being. Its distinctive attributes encompass notable viscosity and water retention capacities, ensuring flexibility and absorbing shock during motion.

Since its discovery, a major debate about mitochondrial uncoupling protein 3 (UCP3) has been whether its metabolic actions result primarily from mitochondrial inner membrane proton transport, a process that decreases respiratory efficiency and ATP synthesis. However, UCP3 expression and activity are induced by conditions that would seem at odds with inefficient 'uncoupled' respiration, including fasting and exercise. Here, we demonstrate that the bacterially expressed human UCP3, reconstituted into liposomes, catalyses a strict exchange of aspartate, malate, sulphate and phosphate.

Introduction: Anxiety and depression in coronary heart disease (CHD) are associated with poorer health outcomes, greater healthcare use and reduced quality of life. Post-traumatic stress symptoms may be a particular concern as they are associated with increased mortality at follow-up. We examined prevalence of PTSD in patients with elevated anxiety/depression scores referred for cardiac rehabilitation (CR) across seven NHS sites in North-West England.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan widely distributed in the human body, especially in body fluids and the extracellular matrix of tissues. It plays a crucial role not only in maintaining tissue hydration but also in cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, and the inflammatory response. HA has demonstrated its efficacy as a powerful bioactive molecule not only for skin antiaging but also in atherosclerosis, cancer, and other pathological conditions.
