Insertion sequences (IS) represent mobile genetic elements that have been shown to be associated with bacterial evolution and adaptation due to their effects on genome plasticity. In , the causative agent of whooping cough, the numerous IS elements induce genomic rearrangements and contribute to the diversity of the global population. Previously, we have shown that the majority of IS-specific endogenous promoters induce the synthesis of alternative transcripts and thereby affect the transcriptional landscape of .

The current study investigates and compares the biological effects of ultrathin conformal coatings of zirconium dioxide (ZrO) and vanadium pentoxide (VO) on osteoblastic MG-63 cells grown on TiO nanotube layers (TNTs). Coatings were achieved by the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. TNTs with average tube diameters of 15, 30, and 100 nm were fabricated on Ti substrates (via electrochemical anodization) and were used as primary substrates for the study.

This work aims to describe the effect of the surface modification of TiO nanotube (TNT) layers on Ti-6Al-4V (TiAlV) alloy by ultrathin TiO coatings prepared via Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) on the growth of MG-63 osteoblastic cells. The TNT layers with two distinctly different inner diameters, namely ∼15 nm and ∼50 nm, were prepared via anodic oxidation of the TiAlV alloy. Flat, i.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study using SH-SY5Y neuronal cells found that exposure to higher concentrations of CdCl (above 50 μM) resulted in both GSH levels increasing and eventually depleting, particularly at 100 μM, causing elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS).
  • * Mitochondrial impairment occurred even at lower CdCl concentrations (50 μM) after 24 hours, indicating that significant damage can arise before GSH depletion happens in these neuronal cells.

An in-depth investigation was conducted on a promising composite material (BiVO/TiO), focusing on its potential toxicity, photoinduced catalytic properties, as well as its antibiofilm and antimicrobial functionalities. The preparation process involved the synthesis of 2D TiO using the lyophilization method, which was subsequently functionalized with sphere-like BiVO through wet impregnation. Finally, we developed BiVO/TiO S-scheme heterojunctions which can greatly promote the separation of electron-hole pairs to achieve high photocatalytic performance.

This work aims to investigate the chemical and/or structural modification of Ti and Ti-6Al-4V (TiAlV) alloy surfaces to possess even more favorable properties toward cell growth. These modifications were achieved by (i) growing TiO nanotube layers on these substrates by anodization, (ii) surface coating by ultrathin TiO atomic layer deposition (ALD), or (iii) by the combination of both. In particular, an ultrathin TiO coating, achieved by 1 cycle of TiO ALD, was intended to shade the impurities of F- and V-based species in tested materials while preserving the original structure and morphology.

Article Synopsis
  • Neutron dark-field imaging is a technique used to analyze material properties by mapping small-angle scattering, but traditional methods only look at one scattering direction at a time.
  • A new approach using a single absorption grating allows for simultaneous investigation of multiple scattering directions, enhancing the method’s capabilities.
  • This new technique successfully reveals detailed information about material structures, such as fiber orientations in carbon compounds and the alignment of domains in stainless steel after deformation, showing promise for better analysis of complex materials.

Although layer-based additive manufacturing methods such as laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB) offer an immense geometrical freedom in design, they are typically subject to a build-up of internal stress ( thermal stress) during manufacturing. As a consequence, significant residual stress (RS) is retained in the final part as a footprint of these internal stresses. Furthermore, localized melting and solidification inherently induce columnar-type grain growth accompanied by crystallographic texture.

17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 10 (17β-HSD10) is a multifunctional mitochondrial enzyme and putative drug target for the treatment of various pathologies including Alzheimer's disease or some types of hormone-dependent cancer. In this study, a series of new benzothiazolylurea-based inhibitors were developed based on the structure-activity relationship (SAR) study of previously published compounds and predictions of their physico-chemical properties. This led to the identification of several submicromolar inhibitors (IC ∼0.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex disease with an unknown etiology. Available treatments, limited to cholinesterase inhibitors and -methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonists, provide symptomatic relief only. As single-target therapies have not proven effective, rational specific-targeted combination into a single molecule represents a more promising approach for treating AD, and is expected to yield greater benefits in alleviating symptoms and slowing disease progression.

Apart from oxygenic photosynthesis, the extent of manganese utilization in bacteria varies from species to species and also appears to depend on external conditions. This observation is in striking contrast to iron, which is similar to manganese but essential for the vast majority of bacteria. To adequately explain the role of manganese in pathogens, we first present in this review that the accumulation of molecular oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere was a key event that linked manganese utilization to iron utilization and put pressure on the use of manganese in general.

, the causative agent of whooping cough, is an extracellular, strictly human pathogen. However, it has been shown that cells can escape phagocytic killing and survive in macrophages upon internalization. Our time-resolved RNA-seq data suggest that efficiently adapts to the intramacrophage environment and responds to host bactericidal activities.

In this study, the diversity of genes was assessed in a C-enriched metagenome upon stable isotope probing (SIP) of microbial populations in legacy PCB-contaminated soil with C-biphenyl (BP). In total, 13 sequence variants (SVs) were identified in the final amplicon dataset. Of these, one SV comprised 59% of all sequences, and when it was translated into a protein sequence, it exhibited 87, 77.

The ability of bacterial pathogens to acquire essential micronutrients is critical for their survival in the host environment. Manganese plays a complex role in the virulence of a variety of pathogens due to its function as an antioxidant and enzymatic cofactor. Therefore, host cells deprive pathogens of manganese to prevent or attenuate infection.

At present, nuclear condensation and fragmentation have been estimated also using Hoechst probes in fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry. However, none of the methods used the Hoechst probes for quantitative spectrofluorometric assessment. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to develop a spectrofluorometric assay for detection of nuclear condensation and fragmentation in the intact cells.

Oxime cholinesterase reactivators (oximes) are used to counteract organophosphate intoxication. Charged oximes are administered via intramuscular or intravenous injection when the majority of dose is unmetabolized and is excreted as urine. In this study, the effects of selected double charged oximes were determined in the HK-2 cell line as a model for renal toxicity screening.

Ti sheets with a native oxide layer, Ti sheets with a crystalline thermal oxide layer, and two kinds of TNT layers (prepared via electrochemical anodization) with a defined inner diameter of 12 and 15 nm were used as substrates. A part of the Ti sheets and the TNT layers was additionally coated by thin TiO coatings using atomic layer deposition (ALD).
