Evaluation of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in an Italian setting: report from the trench.

The spread of carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) has recently become a matter of concern in public health, mainly due to the wide distribution of carbapenemase genes. Italy is a country considered endemic for the spread of blaKPC Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP). The aim of this study was to depict the epidemiological trend of CRE in one Italian hospital over a long period (3 years surveillance, from May 2011 to April 2014).

Galactomannan detection in Geotrichum capitatum invasive infections: report of 2 new cases and review of diagnostic options.

We report 2 cases of Geotrichum capitatum infection in leukemia patients for which Aspergillus galactomannan (GM) assay was positive. The diagnostic options of G. capitatum infections in hematologic patients were reviewed.

African sleeping sickness in tourists returning from Tanzania: the first 2 Italian cases from a small outbreak among European travelers.

A recent cluster of cases of African trypanosomiasis in humans (HAT) has been reported in tourists (most of whom were European) returning from Tanzania; we describe the first 2 patients (both of whom were Italian travelers) with HAT, who have been treated successfully. Because neither vaccine nor drug prophylaxis is currently recommended and/or available for persons traveling to areas of endemicity, physicians should be alerted about this uncommon but potentially life-threatening disease.
