Introduction: NeuroEndocrine Neoplasms (NENs) are rare and can originate from any epithelial organ. We describe a very rare case of retroperitoneal metastasis from a non-functioning neuroendocrine tumor of the ethmoid region and focus on the various issues related to NENs, from their nosological classification up to the most recent acquisitions in the diagnostic and therapeutic field.

Presentation Of Case: A woman presented with a mass in the right retroperitoneal area that infiltrated liver and kidney.

Forced degradation experiments of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) aid in the identification of critical quality attributes (CQAs) by studying the impact of post-translational modifications (PTMs), such as oxidation, deamidation, glycation, and isomerization, on biological functions. Structure-function characterization of mAbs can be used to identify the PTM CQAs and develop appropriate analytical and process controls. However, the interpretation of forced degradation results can be complicated because samples may contain mixtures of asymmetrically and symmetrically modified mAbs with one or two modified chains.

Introduction: SANT of the spleen is a benign lesion that does not recur after splenectomy with unknown etiology.

Presentation Of The Case: We report a case of sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation (SANT) of the spleen mimicking a splenic abscess in a patient with imaging studies that failed to differentiate this lesion from other splenic lesions.

Discussion: SANT of the spleen is a rare condition, with only less than 100 cases reported in the literature.

Background: The institutions with high volume of pancreatic surgery report morbidity rate from 30% to 50% and mortality less than 5% after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). At the present, the most significant cause of morbidity and mortality is pancreatic fistula (PF).

Aim: The purpose of the study is to identify the most important clinical factors which may predict PF development and eventually suggest alternative approaches to the pancreatic stump management.

The authors report a case of alone right adrenal metastasis from colon carcinoma discovered incidentally by CT scan imaging 4 years after colon resection in a 74-year-old man. The presence of metastasis in the adrenal glands represents the second most frequent cause of "adrenal incidentaloma", following cortical-adrenal adenomas. The most common primary tumors responsible for adrenal metastasis are carcinoma of the lung, breast and kidney.

The authors describe the technique to perform a mechanical biliodigestive anastomosis after pancreatoduodenectomy that could be able to reduce the time of surgical intervention and the major systemic postoperative complication especially in elderly patients. Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is considered to be the most effective procedure for the treatment of tumors of the pancreatic head and periampullary tumors. Postoperative morbidity remains high, reaching 40-50% in some series.

A case of adenocarcinoma arising in a 39-year-old patient after restorative proctocolectomy is reported. The patient underwent an ileal pouch-anal anastomosis with double-stapled technique for severe ulcerative colitis 18 years earlier, without evidence of associated neoplasm or dysplasia in operative specimen. After endoscopic diagnosis of adenocarcinoma, the patient was submitted to excision of the pouch and permanent ileostomy, followed by combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Crohn's disease is characterised by a high incidence of perianastomotic recurrence after ileocolic resection. The influence of the anastomotic configuration on the incidence of reoperation was evaluated in patients undergoing resection for Crohn's disease. In our Institution, from 1993 to 2007, 308 consecutive patients affected by ileocolic Crohn's disease were submitted to 343 ileocolic resections or right colectomies.

Alendronate is a known inhibitor of root resorption and the development of alendronate paste would enhance its utilization as intracanal medication. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the biocompatibility of experimental alendronate paste in subcutaneous tissue of rats, for utilization in teeth susceptible to root resorption. The study was conducted on 15 male rats, weighing approximately 180-200 grams.

Jejunal diverticulum is an uncommon, acquired condition, and the majority of patients are usually asymptomatic. Jejunal diverticula become clinically relevant when complications, such as diverticulitis, intestinal bleeding, obstruction, or perforation occur. A rare case of acute abdomen due to a perforated jejunal diverticulum is presented.

The authors describe a case of appendicular oxyuriasis and then go on to review the international literature on this condition. Nothing in the case report provides the surgeon with useful pointers which may help him distinguish between appendicular oxyuriasis and common appendicitis. This is in line with all the existing literature which yields no elements capable of suggesting an accurate preoperative diagnosis.

Lipomas are benign tumors that are common in other sites but rare in the stomach. They are usually submucosal and, when symptomatic, are most often accompanied by gastrointestinal bleeding from ulceration of gastric mucosa overlying the mass or by symptoms of obstruction. A 55-year-old male with epigastric abdominal pain and upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage due to a gastric lipoma is presented; endoscopic and x-ray examinations revealed a submucosal tumor on the posterior wall of the gastric corpus, with ulceration in the mucosa covering it.

The Authors report a particular case and make a careful international literature regarding etiopathogenesis and surgical treatment of oesophageal achalasia. First they consider the infection mechanisms as the cause of underlying motor disturbances of the oesophagus. Afterwards holding as parameters of reference for the evaluation of effectiveness of the therapy both the relief of dysphagia and the appearance of postoperative RGE, the various surgical options are then examined: pneumatic dilatation as opposed to surgery; the approach to thoracic and abdominal surgery and the possible assembly of a reflux protection mechanism.

In patients affected by benign or malignant inoperable airway obstructions, therapeutical options include endoscopic treatment by Nd-YAG laser therapy, tracheobronchial dilatations with rigid or flexible bronchoscope, and inflating balloon dilators. Metal self-expanding or silicone stents allow to obtain stable results. Our experience is based on the use of 14 stents (10 Dumon and 4 Wallstent) in 13 cases of stenosis either due to vegetating malignant tumours not amenable to surgery or benign stenosis.

Using a combination of sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and Western blotting, a high molecular weight Ricinus communis I (RCA I)-binding glycoprotein (approx. Mr 370000) has been identified in human muscle that is consistently altered or absent in muscle from patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). In addition, a Mr 54000 RCA I-binding glycoprotein was identified in 4 out and 8 DMD muscle samples that was not present in normal muscle.

Fifteen lectin-horseradish peroxidase conjugates have been used in a comprehensive histochemical study of human skeletal muscle. The staining patterns of many lectins were found to be coincident with the known distributions of types I, III, IV and V collagen, fibronectin and laminin. One lectin, Bandeiraea simplicifolia (BSA I), selectively stained capillaries in a blood group-specific manner, the significance of which is unknown.

Using an electron histochemical technique, we have observed the binding of a D-galactose-specific lectin to the muscle cell plasma membrane in muscle biopsies taken from patients with various neuromuscular disorders. In spinal muscular atrophy, the only neurogenic disease studied, the plasma membrane stained as in normal muscle. However, in the myopathies Becker and limb-girdle muscular dystrophy and in the polymyositis there was a reduction in both the occurrence and the intensity of staining of the plasma membrane.

Recently, it has become clear that a structural or functional abnormality of the plasma membrane may be involved in the pathogenesis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). We have used a D-galactose specific lectin, that binds strongly to the muscle cell surface, to search for differences in sarcolemmal staining in biopsies from 5 normal and 7 DMD individuals. Electron optical studies revealed a dramatic and consistent decrease in lectin binding by the muscle plasma membrane in DMD.

Levels of prolactinaemia, IgA and transferrin and the ratio between the two latter were measured in 20 male chronic alcoholics and a second group of controls in order to verify the diagnostic importance of such measurements. In partial conflict with reports in the literature, it is concluded that prolactinaemia measurement is not particularly important. The evaluation of the IgA-transferrin ratio, on the other hand, is judged to be useful for the diagnosis of alcohol-induced hepatopathologies.
