Layered transition metal oxide (NaTMO) cathodes are considered highly appropriate for the practical applications of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their facile synthesis and high theoretical capacity. Generally, the phase evolution behaviors of NaTMO during solid-state reactions at high temperature closely related to their carbon footprint, prime cost, and the eventual electrochemical properties, while the thermal stability in various desodiated states associated with wide temperature fluctuations are extremely prominent to the electrochemical properties and safety of SIB devices. Therefore, in this review, the influences of sintering conditions such as pyrolysis temperature, soaking time, and cooling rates on the phase formation patterns of NaTMO are summarized.

We report the appearance of superconductivity in single-unit-cell NdNiO, exhibiting a transition temperature similar to that of thicker films. In situ synchrotron x-ray scattering performed during growth of the parent phase, NdNiO, shows that the necessary layer-by-layer deposition sequence does not follow the sequence of the formula unit but an alternate order due to the relative stability of the perovskite unit cell. We exploit this insight to grow ultrathin NdNiO heterostructures and conduct in situ studies of topotactic reduction, finding that formation of the square-planar phase occurs rapidly and is highly sensitive to reduction temperature, with small deviations from the optimum condition leading to inhomogeneity and the loss of superconductivity.

Article Synopsis
  • Developing the sericulture industry is a promising way to utilize cadmium-contaminated soils, but managing silkworm excrement (SE) presents challenges.
  • This study examined the impact of SE biochar (with and without cadmium) on paddy soil chemistry, mulberry leaf quality, and cadmium accumulation in mulberry plants.
  • Results showed that both types of biochar improved soil pH and cation exchange capacity, boosted mulberry growth, and helped reduce cadmium levels in the plants, suggesting that using SE biochar is a viable method to remediate cadmium-polluted soils.

The thermal properties of various corn stalk tissues (including stem, husk, ear, cob, and leaf), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and their blends were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis under a nitrogen atmosphere. The results indicate that the thermal decomposition process of corn stalk tissue/HDPE mixtures is delayed with an increasing heating rate, regardless of the tissue type. Besides, the structural differences among various corn stalk tissues significantly influence their thermal behavior, product distribution, and co-pyrolysis kinetics with HDPE.

Flavonoid dimers are being focused due to their particular structure that links two units through CC or C-O-C bonds. This paper provides a comprehensive and systematic overview of the reaction mechanism of flavonoid dimerization and discusses their synthesis process and methods to devise an ideal preparation scheme of flavonoid dimers. Given the polyphenolic hydroxyl groups of dimerized flavonoids as well as their unique bridging molecular structures, we preliminarily explored the link between conformation and function, and discovered their several reinforced bioactivities compared to flavonoid monomers, such as hypolipidemic, antidiabetic, and neuroprotective activities as well as other potential.

Background: The association between lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) and sarcopenia in T2DM patients of general age is unclear, and whether this association differs by sex remains uncertain. We intend to analyze the association between Lp(a) and sarcopenia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and whether this association differs by sex.

Methods: T2DM patients between December 2021 and December 2022 were consecutively enrolled.

  • Biodegradation of polyurethane (PU) plastics offers a more cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to landfilling and incineration, but efficient degradation methods are currently limited.
  • A wild strain called LTX1 and its mutant MLTX1, isolated from coastal mudflat, both demonstrate over 80% PU foam weight loss in just 12 days, making them the most effective strains identified to date.
  • A new gene, purh, linked to cutinase enzymes is discovered and expressed in E. coli, potentially advancing the biological recycling and depolymerization of PU foam.

In this paper, the dynamic behaviors of tuberculosis in the context of indirect environmental transmission are discussed by establishing the SEIRB epidemic model. The basic reproduction number is computed by employing the next-generation matrix approach. The global stability of disease-free equilibrium and endemic equilibrium is proved by constructing the Lyapunov function and the application of LaSalle's invariance principle.

  • The color performance of a display is influenced by its gamut (range of displayable colors) and EOTF (Electro-Optical Transfer Function), which together affect color accuracy and depth.
  • WCGDs (Wide Color Gamut Displays) are popular for their vibrant color performance, but they can oversaturate certain colors, which can be visually unappealing.
  • The paper offers a detailed analysis of this oversaturation issue, presenting a display model and two strategies to optimize color reproduction for more accurate and efficient color management in WCGDs.

The prophylactic implantation of biological mesh can effectively prevent the occurrence of stoma-site incisional hernia (SSIH) in patients undergoing stoma retraction. Therefore, our study prospectively established and validated a mixed model, which combined radiomics, stepwise regression, and deep learning for the prediction of SSIH in patients with temporary ileostomy. The mixed model showed good discrimination of the SSIH patients on all cohorts, which outperformed deep learning, radiomics, and clinical models alone (overall area under the curve [AUC]: 0.

Sediment from the effluent of cotton spinning industry was valorized as the renewable bio-based polyols substitute for the rigid polyurethane (RPUFs), targeting to generate the economic and environmental benefits. Before reaction with the isocyanate, the sediment was functionalized by hydroxymethylation, in order to increase the density of the active hydroxyl groups for higher reactivity. The structural characterization results of the functionalized sediment indicated the material exhibited narrow molecular weight distribution, high hydroxyl groups content, and highly aromatic skeleton, which can be qualified as the renewable polyols for the RPUFs.

Metabolic requirements vary during development, and our understanding of how metabolic activity influences cell specialization is incomplete. Here, we describe a switch from glutamine catabolism to synthesis required for erythroid cell maturation. Glutamine synthetase (GS), one of the oldest functioning genes in evolution, is activated during erythroid maturation to detoxify ammonium generated from heme biosynthesis, which is up-regulated to support hemoglobin production.

Given the vulnerability of large and medium-sized mammal communities to climate change and human disturbances, understanding the spatial-temporal dynamics of these communities is essential for effective conservation planning. However, in many biodiversity hotspots, precise biological community assessments are insufficient. From 2012 to 2022, we deployed 784 camera traps in eight nature reserves (including sub-reserves) and one State Forest Farm (SFF, less strictly protected than a reserve) to study the composition and distribution of large and medium-sized mammals in tropical Xishuangbanna.
