Marburg virus (family Filoviridae) causes sporadic outbreaks of severe hemorrhagic disease in sub-Saharan Africa. Bats have been implicated as likely natural reservoir hosts based most recently on an investigation of cases among miners infected in 2007 at the Kitaka mine, Uganda, which contained a large population of Marburg virus-infected Rousettus aegyptiacus fruit bats. Described here is an ecologic investigation of Python Cave, Uganda, where an American and a Dutch tourist acquired Marburg virus infection in December 2007 and July 2008.

We investigated the role of variation in putative psychosis genes coding for elements of the white matter system by examining the contribution of genotypic variation in three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) neuregulin 1 (NRG1) SNP8NRG221533, myelin oligodendrocytes glycoprotein (MOG) rs2857766 and CNP (rs2070106) and one haplotype HAP(ICE) (deCODE) to white matter volume in patients with psychotic disorder and their unaffected relatives. Structural magnetic resonance imaging and blood samples for genotyping were collected on 189 participants including patients with schizophrenia (SZ) or bipolar I disorder (BDI), unaffected first-degree relatives of these patients and healthy volunteers. The association of genotypic variation with white matter volume was assessed using voxel-based morphometry in SPM5.

The Army Medical Department Lessons Learned Division conducted a survey of small unit service members from July through September 2011 to obtain feedback on the challenges they faced during recent deployment operations. Personnel assigned to selected company-sized units, teams, and detachments that redeployed within the past 12 months were asked to complete an online survey of questions regarding their predeployment and operational experiences. The results revealed a number of variables such as respondents' service component, assigned unit, and geographic location that influenced views on the issues.

Lujo virus (LUJV) is a novel member of the Arenaviridae family that was first identified in 2008 after an outbreak of severe hemorrhagic fever (HF). In what was a small but rapidly progressing outbreak, this previously unknown virus was transmitted from the critically ill index patient to 4 attending healthcare workers. Three clusters of organ transplant-associated lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) transmissions have been identified in the United States; 9 of 10 recipients died. In February 2011, we identified a fourth cluster of organ transplant-associated LCMV infections. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing for peak oxygen uptake (Vo(2peak)) can evaluate prognosis in chronic heart failure (CHF) patients, with the peak respiratory exchange ratio (RER(peak)) commonly used to confirm maximal effort and maximal oxygen uptake (Vo(2max)). We determined the precision of RER(peak) in confirming Vo(2max), and whether a novel ramp-incremental (RI) step-exercise (SE) (RISE) test could better determine Vo(2max) in CHF. Male CHF patients (n = 24; NYHA class I-III) performed a symptom-limited RISE-95 cycle ergometer test in the format: RI (4-18 W/min; ∼10 min); 5 min recovery (10 W); SE (95% peak RI work rate).

Surveillance work was initiated to study the presence of highly infectious diseases like Ebola-Reston, Marburg, Nipah and other possible viruses that are known to be found in the bat species and responsible for causing diseases in humans. A novel adenovirus was isolated from a common species of fruit bat (Rousettus leschenaultii) captured in Maharashtra State, India. Partial sequence analysis of the DNA polymerase gene shows this isolate to be a newly recognized member of the genus Mastadenovirus (family Adenoviridae), approximately 20% divergent at the nucleotide level from Japanese BatAdV, its closest known relative.
