Objective: To explore the communication and resource needs of mothers diagnosed with breast cancer treated with curative intent in communicating with their young children and to identify gaps in the resources and support provided to these women.

Methods: Data were collected via semi-structured telephone interviews from 13 mothers who were diagnosed with breast cancer while parenting a young child (age 3-12 years), and 10 health professionals in Victoria, Australia. Data were analysed qualitatively using the Framework Method.

Vitamin D and autism, what's new?

An increasing amount of evidence points to the possibility that gestational and early childhood vitamin D deficiency [25(OH)D < 40 ng/ml] cause some cases of autism. Vitamin D is metabolized into a seco-steroid hormone that regulates about 3% of the 26,000 genes in the coding human genome. It is also a neurosteroid that is active in brain development, having effects on cellular proliferation, differentiation, calcium signaling, neurotrophic and neuroprotective actions; it also appears to have an effect on neurotransmission and synaptic plasticity.

When an infant presents with X-rays showing multiple unexplained fractures in various stages of healing (MUFVSH), the child is usually diagnosed with child abuse based on criteria of the Academy of Pediatrics' Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect (AAPCCAAN). Almost always, the infant is subsequently removed from the home and civil or criminal proceeding commence. It may be that healing infantile rickets or other poorly understood metabolic bone disorders of infancy are responsible for these x-rays.

Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is typically not indicated in the pre-operative management of pregnancies with a live fetus, because risk of fetal death from reduced uteroplacental blood flow. However, pre-operative UAE in pregnancies with a fetal demise poses no fetal risk, and may offer maternal benefits. Patients with placental abruption resulting in fetal demise are at high-risk for developing disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), which could have devastating complications such as peri-operative hemorrhage and death.

These materials often need to replicate biological functionality such as muscle contractions and flexibility. Background: New technology for clinical data collection is rapidly evolving and may be useful for both researchers and clinicians; however, this new technology has not been tested for accuracy, reliability, or validity.

Objective: This study aims to test the accuracy of visual analog scale (VAS) for pain on a newly designed application on the iPad (iPadVAS) and measure the reliability and validity of iPadVAS compared to a paper copy (paperVAS).

Methods: Accuracy was determined by physically measuring an iPad scale on screen and comparing it to the results from the program, with a researcher collecting 101 data points.

A growing body of literature suggests that higher serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations, either in utero or in early life, may reduce the risk of autism. For example, an ecological study in the companion paper inversely correlated solar UV-B doses in the United States with prevalence of autism among those aged 6-17 y. That study proposed that vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy could account for this finding, although the findings are also consistent with childhood vitamin D deficiency contributing to the condition.

Several studies found an inverse relationship between 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and markers of inflammation. A controversy exists as to whether vitamin D lowers inflammation or whether inflammation lowers 25(OH)D concentrations. Certainly 25(OH)D concentrations fall after major surgery.
