Evidence suggests that, when compact objects such as black holes and neutron stars form, they may receive a 'natal kick', during which the stellar remnant gains momentum. Observational evidence for neutron star kicks is substantial, yet is limited for black hole natal kicks, and some proposed black hole formation scenarios result in very small kicks. Here we report that the canonical black hole low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) V404 Cygni is part of a wide hierarchical triple with a tertiary companion at least 3,500 astronomical units (AU) away from the inner binary.

Methyl aldohexopyranosides were C-labeled at contiguous carbons, crystallized, and studied by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and solid-state C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to examine the degree to which density functional theory (DFT) can calculate one-bond C-C spin-coupling constants () in saccharides with sufficient accuracy to permit their use in ' analysis, a newly-reported hybrid DFT/NMR method that provides probability distributions of molecular torsion angles in solution (Zhang , , 2017, , 3042-3058; Meredith , , 2022, , 3135-3141). Experimental values in crystalline samples of the doubly C-labeled compounds were measured by solid-state C NMR and compared to those calculated from five different DFT models: (1) values calculated from single structures identical to those observed in crystalline samples by X-ray crystallography (all atom refinement); (2) values calculated from the single structures in (1) but after Hirshfeld atom refinement (HAR); (3) values calculated from the single structures in (1) after DFT-optimization of hydrogen atoms only; and (4 and 5) values calculated in rotamers of torsion angle (C1-C2-O2-O2H) or (C4-C5-C6-O6) from which either specific or generalized parameterized equations were obtained and used to calculate values in the specific or rotamers observed in crystalline samples. Good qualitative agreement was observed between calculated values and those measured by solid-state C NMR regardless of the DFT model, but in no cases were calculated values quantitative, differing (over-estimated) on average by 4-5% from experimental values.

Rencofilstat (RCF) demonstrated antifibrotic effects in preclinical models and was safe and well tolerated in Phase 1 studies. The aim of this Phase 2a study was safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and exploration of efficacy biomarkers in subjects with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). This Phase 2a, multicenter, single-blind, placebo-controlled study randomized 49 presumed F2/F3 subjects to RCF 75 mg once daily (QD), RCF 225 mg QD, or placebo for 28 days.

Liquefaction of high solid loadings of unpretreated corn stover pellets has been demonstrated with rheology of the resulting slurries enabling mixing and movement within biorefinery bioreactors. However, some forms of pelleted stover do not readily liquefy, so it is important to screen out lots of unsuitable pellets before processing is initiated. This work reports a laboratory assay that rapidly assesses whether pellets have the potential for enzyme-based liquefaction at high solids loadings.

Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 is a RNA virus that associates with heterogeneous clinical manifestations and complications. Auto-antibodies are identified in approximately 50% of hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Objectives: To determine the global incidence of myositis-related auto-antibodies (non Jo1-RNA synthetases: anti-PL7, anti-PL12, anti-EJ, anti-OJ and RNA-sensor: anti-MDA5) in our laboratory during COVID-19 pandemics, and to describe the clinical and laboratory features of these patients.

Introduction: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a multifactorial disease in which, due to the interaction of several variables, the vulnerability of suffering from it increases. Several models, such as the diathesis-stress model, have explained these interactions. However, experiencing stressful events does not always lead to the development of MDD, and the attribution and appraisal of stressful events contributing to further development of depression symptoms has been considered as a possible explanation.

The Jansari assessment of Executive Functions for Children (JEF-C) is a new non-immersive computerised assessment of executive functions. The objectives of the study were to test the feasibility and validity of JEF-C in children and adolescents with acquired brain injury (ABI). Twenty-nine patients with ABI aged 10-18 years and 30 age-and gender-matched controls were tested.

Objectives: The objectives of the study were: (1) to describe the attention deficits profile of children with significant acquired brain injury (ABI) in comparison to matched controls, using the virtual classroom (VC); (2) to assess the utility of the VC in detecting attention deficits in children with ABI, as compared to classical neuropsychological tests and questionnaire-based assessment of attention; and (3) to determine how performance in the VC is affected by demographic and injury severity variables.

Methods: Forty-one children with ABI and 35 age- and gender-matched controls, aged 8-16, were assessed with the VC. The results of the VC were compared to sub-tests of the Test of Everyday Attention for Children (TEA-Ch), the Conners' Parent Rating Scales-Revised: Short (CPRS-R:S) questionnaire and analysed according to demographic and injury severity variables.

This paper aims at presenting programs targeted at the prevention of adolescent depression applied with Spanish-speaking populations that have been developed in Spanish-speaking countries and are mostly published in Spanish. These programs have been developed under different cultural contexts in Spain and Latin-America. The main goal of this paper is to make the studies and movements of the Spanish-speaking literature in this field accessible to the non-Spanish-speaking part of the research community.

We present models for the X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. These are fitted to data obtained using the High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) on the X-ray observatory. The data show line and radiative recombination continuum (RRC) emission from a broad range of ions and elements.

Recent X-ray observations of supernova remnants.

Philos Trans A Math Phys Eng Sci

September 2002

The imaging and spectral capabilities of the Chandra X-ray Observatory and XMM-Newton are extremely well suited for studying the remnants of supernovae. High-resolution imaging over the band 0.1-10 keV maps the detailed structure of the supernova remnant, delineates the forward and reverse shock fronts and facilitates proper motion studies of the expanding material.

Internal herniation through a congenital defect in the falciform ligament is extremely rare. We report an unusual observation of small bowel obstruction through an iatrogenic defect of the falciform ligament. Prompt diagnosis was made by helical CT, permitting a rapid surgical procedure to preserve the viability of the obstructed segment.

A new type of primary thrombocytopathy is described. Three main alterations were found: (1) a defect of the aggregation reaction with ADP, epinephrine and collagen and a normal response to ristocetin and arachidonic acid; (2) a moderate deficiency of platelet procoagulant activity, and (3) a combined hypertrophy of the two membrane systems of the platelet--the open canalicular and the dense tubular. The latter defect is shown as an abnormal membrane complex situated on one of the platelet poles.
