As global income levels and population increase, meat consumption and production are rising, raising concerns about climate change, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability. Offal offers a sustainable, nutrient-rich, and economical alternative to muscle meat, providing proteins, vitamins, and minerals. This study was triggered by the scarcity of information on the microbiological quality of edible bovine offal, which is often associated with poor hygienic conditions during handling and processing at slaughterhouse.

Introduction: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrinopathy in women of reproductive age. MicroRNA (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs related to the control of gene expression in biological fluids. Our study analyzed the expression of miRNAs related to inflammation in individuals with PCOS compared to controls.

The hypothesis of this study is that it is possible to determine the plant stand in the soybean ( L. Merril) crop based on the spatial variability of management units, which are limiting factors in maximizing crop yield. Our objectives were as follows: (I) to evaluate the relationship between soil physical and chemical attributes to establish potential management units for variable-rate seeding; (II) to propose a method for varying plant stands based on the law of minimum soil nutrients; an (III) to relate the interaction between different plant stands on soybean grain yield, taking into account the interaction between the spatial variability of the mapped attributes.

Bacterial resistance in is a significant public health challenge, as these bacteria can evade multiple antibiotics, leading to difficult-to-treat infections with high mortality rates. As part of the search for alternatives, essential oils from medicinal plants have shown promising antibacterial potential due to their diverse chemical constituents. This study evaluated the antibacterial, antibiofilm, and synergistic activities of the essential oil of (EOLo) and its main constituents against multidrug-resistant clinical isolates of .

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the connection between growth and differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) levels and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), finding that GDF-15 is higher in women with PCOS compared to controls.
  • - Among women with PCOS, those treated with metformin showed significantly increased GDF-15 levels compared to those on a placebo.
  • - The research indicates that GDF-15 may play a role in various biological pathways associated with PCOS, including hormonal responses and metabolic processes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a self-assessment questionnaire for hirsutism in Latin-American women using updated guidelines from two major health organizations.
  • A total of 188 premenopausal women completed the questionnaire, scoring hair growth in nine areas, and their results were compared to clinician evaluations, revealing an overall accuracy of 80% for the self-assessment using ES criteria.
  • Despite high sensitivity, the self-assessment showed low specificity and limited diagnostic value, suggesting it may be more suitable for screening purposes in research rather than clinical diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how the brain anticipates and reacts to unexpected traffic accidents by analyzing brain activity during motorcycle simulations with 161 participants.
  • Key findings indicate that specific brain regions (like the right inferior parietal lobe and anterior cingulate cortex) show increased activity before and after an accident, highlighting neural responses to danger.
  • Greater connectivity within and between brain networks in both pre- and post-accident phases suggests that emotional processing and attentional shifts are crucial for adapting to unexpected situations and managing behaviors post-accident.

Purpose: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder often linked to metabolic syndrome (MS), raising the risk of cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes. Certain indicators, such as the lipid accumulation product (LAP) and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), can predict MS in PCOS patients. This study aimed to assess the predictive power of the visceral adiposity index (VAI) in comparison to LAP and HOMA-IR as predictors of MS in PCOS patients.

Mindfulness training has been shown to improve psychological health and general well-being. However, it is unclear which brain and personality systems may be affected by this practice for improving adaptive behavior and quality of life. The present study explores the effects of a 5-week mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) at the neuroanatomical level and its relationship with dispositional mindfulness and impulsivity.

We report the chemical composition of the crude leaf extracts obtained from (Cham.) Miers (Bignoniaceae), a simple high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) method based on mangiferin as an internal standard to quantify verbascoside, and the verbascoside acute oral toxicity and antileishmanial activity. HPLC-high-resolution mass spectrometry-DAD (HPLC-HRMS-DAD) analyses of the crude ethanol leaf extracts (CE-1 and CE-2) revealed that verbascoside was the major constituent in both extracts.

Introduction: Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) have a higher prevalence of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) than the general population. PCOS and NAFLD have common metabolic risk factors, however, the role of diet in NAFLD development is still uncertain in PCOS women.

Objective: To evaluate and compare the dietary patterns and nutritional intake in patients with PCOS with and without NAFLD.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of breakfast consumption and estimate its associations with the consumption of food at different degrees of industrial processing and with overweight indicators in Brazilian adolescents.

Methods: This cross-sectional study involved a probabilistic sample of 14- to 19-y-old adolescents enrolled in 29 public schools in the municipality of Juiz de Fora, MG, Southeast Brazil (n = 805). The frequency of breakfast consumption was evaluated via a questionnaire (classified into "do not consume", "sometimes consume", and "regularly consume").

Background: Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) contribute to significant morbidity and mortality among patients with haemato-oncological conditions, seriously ill hospitalised patients and those in intensive care (ICU). We surveyed for the World Health Organization-recommended essential diagnostic tests for IFIs in these risk groups in Africa.

Methods: The Global Action For Fungal Infections (GAFFI) evaluated the different levels of access to both diagnostics for IFIs for populations in Africa, with the aim of building a comparative dataset and a publicly available interactive map.

Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease that affects more than 8 million people. Although there are therapies against this disease, the search for new drugs is important because the current treatments show limited effectiveness and high toxicity. In this work, eighteen dihydrobenzofuran-type neolignans (DBNs) and two benzofuran-type neolignans (BNs) were synthesized and evaluated against amastigote forms of two strains.

Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) is used for prevention of malaria in pregnant women in Angola. We sequenced the Plasmodium falciparum dihydrofolate reductase () and dihydropteroate synthase () genes, implicated in SP resistance, in samples collected during a 2019 study of artemisinin-based combination therapy efficacy in Benguela, Lunda Sul, and Zaire provinces. A total of 90 day 0 and day of failure samples were individually sequenced, while 508 day 0 samples from participants without recurrent parasitemia were pooled after DNA extraction into 61 pools.

Background: Rotator cuff disease is one of the leading causes of musculoskeletal pain and disability, and its etiology is most likely multifactorial but remains incompletely understood. Therefore, the objective of this research was to investigate the relationship of the single-nucleotide rs820218 polymorphism of the SAP30-binding protein (SAP30BP) gene with rotator cuff tears in the Amazonian population.

Methods: The case group consisted of patients who were operated on due to rotator cuff tears in a hospital in the Amazon region between 2010 and 2021, and the control group was composed of individuals who were selected after negative physical examinations for rotator cuff tears.
