Analyzing tissue microstructure is essential for understanding complex biological systems in different species. Tissue functions largely depend on their intrinsic tissue architecture. Therefore, studying the three-dimensional (3D) microstructure of tissues, such as the liver, is particularly fascinating due to its conserved essential roles in metabolic processes and detoxification.

Phenotypic characterization of liver tissue heterogeneity through a next-generation 3D single-cell atlas.

Three-dimensional (3D) geometrical models are potent tools for quantifying complex tissue features and exploring structure-function relationships. However, these models are generally incomplete due to experimental limitations in acquiring multiple (> 4) fluorescent channels in thick tissue sections simultaneously. Indeed, predictive geometrical and functional models of the liver have been restricted to few tissue and cellular components, excluding important cellular populations such as hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and Kupffer cells (KCs).

Background: High heart rate (HR) and restlessness are two important features of music performance anxiety (MPA). In a case report of a cellist suffering from this condition, we showed that HR and restlessness decreased after repeated live performances of the same musical excerpt, thereby positively modulating objective performance criteria and subjective components. Here, we largely replicate these results in a group of 18 string players reporting MPA.

Mental and physical health in family members of substance users: A scoping review.

Background: Due to the high pressure they sustain, family members of substance users are thought to experience negative consequences in mental and physical health. This scoping review provided a comprehensive overview on the mental and physical health of adult Affected Family Members (AFMs).

Method: We searched in-journal English articles in PubMed, with no date limit, guided by the concepts of stress, strain, and burden, and including several terms related to substance use.

We investigated, in a university student population, spontaneous (non-speeded) fast and slow number-to-line mapping responses using non-symbolic (dots) and symbolic (words) stimuli. Seeking for less conventionalized responses, we used anchors 0-130, rather than the standard 0-100. Slow responses to both types of stimuli only produced linear mappings with no evidence of non-linear compression.

Monitoring stage fright outside the laboratory: an example in a professional musician using wearable sensors.

We implemented and tested a wearable sensor system to measure patterns of stress responses in a professional musician under public performance conditions. Using this sensor system, we monitored the cellist's heart activity, the motion of multiple body parts, and their gradual changes during three repeated performances of a skill-demanding piece in front of a professional audience. From the cellist and her teachers, we collected stage fright self-reports and performance ratings that were related to our sensor data analysis results.

[Evaluation of the appropriateness of public hospital use using AEP in the Abruzzo Region of Italy: results by hospital and ward, main predictors and potential implications].

In the context of a wide healthcare system reorganization, the Abruzzo Region of Italy used the Appropriateness Evaluation Protocol (AEP) to carry out a systematic evaluation of the appropriateness of the admissions performed during 2006 in all public hospitals. After specific training courses, a sample representative of all ordinary admissions was assessed twice: first by regional investigators (external assessment) then by the local personnel (internal assessment). Random-effect logistic regression was used to evaluate potential inappropriateness predictors.

Methods: After approval of the local ethics committee, 8 healthy females were included. Prior to scanning, subjects were catheterized and the bladder was filled until first desire to void occurred.
