Ensemble machine learning to predict futile recanalization after mechanical thrombectomy based on non-contrast CT imaging.

Objectives: Despite successful recanalization after Mechanical Thrombectomy (MT), approximately 25 % of patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS) due to Large Vessel Occlusion (LVO) show unfavorable clinical outcomes, namely Futile Recanalization (FR). We aimed to use a Machine Learning (ML) Non-Contrast brain CT (NCCT) imaging predictive model to identify FR in patients undergoing MT.

Materials & Methods: Between July 2022 and December 2022, 70 consecutive patients with LVO undergoing a complete recanalization (eTICI 3) with MT within 8 h from onset at our Centre were analyzed.

Material And Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on 458 elderly subjects ≥60 years-old of Santiago de Chile.

Association between misty mesentery with baseline or new diagnosis of cancer: a matched cohort study.

We compared the prevalence of a baseline diagnosis of cancer in patients with and without misty mesentery (MM) and determined its association with the development of a new cancer. This was a retrospective, HIPAA-compliant, IRB-approved case-control study of 148 cases and 4:1 age- and gender-matched controls. Statistical tests included chi-square, t-test, hazard models, and C-statistic.

Silver-loaded chitosan coating as an integrated approach to face titanium implant-associated infections: analytical characterization and biological activity.

The present work focuses on the idea to prevent and/or inhibit the colonization of implant surfaces by microbial pathogens responsible for post-operative infections, adjusting antimicrobial properties of the implant surface prior to its insertion. An antibacterial coating based on chitosan and silver was developed by electrodeposition techniques on poly(acrylic acid)-coated titanium substrates. When a silver salt was added during the chitosan deposition step, a stable and scalable silver incorporation was achieved.

The global interest in saving food resources is leading to recycle wasted-food materials to extract useful nutrients. In dairy industry, the recycling of whey proteins determines their utilization in the healthy-addressed foods, which, however, can cause immunological responses in allergic subjects. In this work, a whey protein concentrate (WPC) was alternatively hydrolyzed with pepsin, papain, trypsin and rennin in order to attenuate or abolish the β-lactoglobulin (BLG) antigenicity.

Efficacy of Combined Sous Vide-Microwave Cooking for Foodborne Pathogen Inactivation in Ready-to-Eat Chicory Stems.

There is a variety of different food processing methods, which can be used to prepare ready-to-eat foods. However, the need to preserve the freshness and nutritional qualities leads to the application of mild technologies which may be insufficient to inactivate microbial pathogens. In this work, fresh chicory stems were packed under a vacuum in films, which were transparent to microwaves.

Efficacy of gaseous ozone to counteract postharvest table grape sour rot.

This work aims at studying the efficacy of low doses of gaseous ozone in postharvest control of the table grape sour rot, a disease generally attributed to a consortium of non-Saccharomyces yeasts (NSY) and acetic acid bacteria (AAB). Sour rot incidence of wounded berries, inoculated with 8 NSYstrains, or 7 AAB, or 56 yeast-bacterium associations, was monitored at 25 °C up to six days. Sour rot incidence in wounded berries inoculated with yeast-bacterium associations resulted higher than in berries inoculated with one single NSY or AAB strain.

Development of a Synbiotic Beverage Enriched with Bifidobacteria Strains and Fortified with Whey Proteins.

The objective of this study was to develop a new synbiotic beverage evaluating the ability of some bifidobacteria strains to grow in this beverage which was fortified with whey proteins up to 20 g L, and enriched with 10 g L of prebiotic inulin or resistant starch. The ability of strains to survive for 30 days at 4°C was evaluated in two synbiotic whey protein fortified beverages formulated with 2% of whey proteins and 1% of inulin or resistant starch. Microbial growth was significantly affected by the whey protein amount as well as by the kind of prebiotic fiber.

Gallium-modified chitosan/poly(acrylic acid) bilayer coatings for improved titanium implant performances.

A gallium-modified chitosan/poly(acrylic acid) bilayer was obtained by electrochemical techniques on titanium to reduce orthopaedic and/or dental implants failure. The bilayer in vitro antibacterial properties and biocompatibility were evaluated against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and on MG63 osteoblast-like cells, respectively. Gallium loading into the bilayer was carefully tuned by the electrochemical deposition time to ensure the best balance between antibacterial activity and cytocompatibility.

Transcriptional and epigenetic phenomena in peripheral blood cells of monozygotic twins discordant for alzheimer's disease, a case report.

Target genes in Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been identified. In monozygotic twins discordant for AD we analysed the expression of selected genes, and their possible regulation by epigenetic mechanisms in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, possibly useful to discover biomarkers. Amyloid precursor protein, sirtuin 1 and peptidyl prolyl isomerase 1 gene expressions were highly up-regulated in the AD twin versus the healthy one.

Daily meal frequency and associated variables in children and adolescents.

Objective: To investigate the frequency distribution of daily meals and its relation to demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral, anthropometric and biochemical factors in children and adolescents.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with a representative sample of 708 schoolchildren aged 7-14 years. Data on personal information, socioeconomic status, physical activity and number of meals were obtained through semi-structured questionnaire and consumption by 24-h recall and food record.

Obstructive sleep apnea in Prader-Willi syndrome: risks and advantages of adenotonsillectomy.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a well-known clinical manifestation of Prader-Willi syndrome. The aim of our study is to evaluate the efficacy of adenotonsillectomy for the treatment of the disorder as well as the improvement of their post-operative quality of life. Background: An External Quality Assessment (EQA) program was developed to investigate the state of the art of HER2 immunohistochemical determination in breast cancer (BC) in 16 Pathology Departments in the Lazio Region (Italy). This program was implemented through two specific steps to evaluate HER2 staining (step 1) and interpretation (step 2) reproducibility among participants.
