Background: Obesity during pregnancy is related to adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Factors involved in these outcomes may include increased maternal insulin resistance, inflammation, oxidative stress, and nutrient mishandling. The placenta is the primary determinant of fetal outcomes, and its function can be impacted by maternal obesity.

Ferromagnetism is the collective alignment of atomic spins that retain a net magnetic moment below the Curie temperature, even in the absence of external magnetic fields. Reducing this fundamental property into strictly two-dimensions was proposed in metal-organic coordination networks, but thus far has eluded experimental realization. In this work, we demonstrate that extended, cooperative ferromagnetism is feasible in an atomically thin two-dimensional metal-organic coordination network, despite only ≈ 5% of the monolayer being composed of Fe atoms.

The obesity epidemic has led to a growing body of research investigating the consequences of maternal obesity on pregnancy and offspring health. The placenta, traditionally viewed as a passive intermediary between mother and fetus, is known to play a critical role in modulating the intrauterine environment and fetal development, and we now know that maternal obesity leads to increased inflammation, oxidative stress, and altered placental function. Here, we review recent research exploring the involvement of inflammation and oxidative stress as mechanisms impacting the placenta and fetus during obese pregnancy.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for 71% of all annual deaths, totaling 41 million people worldwide. The development and progression of these diseases are highly related to the environment and lifestyle choices, among which physical inactivity and excess malnutrition stand out. Currently, in Chile, there is no evidence at the regional and local level on the impact of physical activity and healthy nutrition plans and interventions on health promotion, prevention, and timely treatment of NCDs.

Physical inactivity is a major health concern, associated with the development of several non-communicable diseases and with an increased mortality rate. Therefore, promoting active lifestyles has become a crucial public health necessity for enhancing overall health and quality of life. The WHO guidelines for physical activity (PA) present valuable contributions in this respect; however, we believe that greater specificity should be added or complemented towards physical exercise (PE) testing, prescription and programming in future recommendations.

The relation between spontaneous and stimulated brain activity is a fundamental question in neuroscience which has received wide attention in experimental studies. Recently, it has been suggested that the evoked response to external stimuli can be predicted from temporal correlations of spontaneous activity. Previous theoretical results, confirmed by the comparison with magnetoencephalography data for human brains, were obtained for the Wilson-Cowan model in the condition of balance of excitation and inhibition, a signature of a healthy brain.

By using the worldline Monte Carlo technique, matrix product state, and a variational approach à la Feynman, we investigate the equilibrium properties and relaxation features of the dissipative quantum Rabi model, where a two level system is coupled to a linear harmonic oscillator embedded in a viscous fluid. We show that, in the Ohmic regime, a Beretzinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transition occurs by varying the coupling strength between the two level system and the oscillator. This is a nonperturbative result, occurring even for extremely low dissipation magnitude.

Aims: Chronic intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (CIHH) exposure due to shift work occurs mainly in 4 × 4 or 7 × 7 days shifts in mining, astronomy, and customs activities, among other institutions. However, the long-lasting effects of CIHH on cardiovascular structure and function are not well characterized. We aimed to investigate the effects of CIHH on the cardiac and vascular response of adult rats simulating high-altitude (4600 m) x low-altitude (760 m) working shifts.

The incomplete partition type III is a severe cochlear malformation present in X-linked deafness. It is a rare, non-syndromic cause of severe to profound mixed hearing loss, often progressive. The complete absence of bony modiolus and the wide communication between the cochlea and the internal auditory canal make cochlear implantation challenging, with still no consensus on the management of these patients.

We study a stochastic version of the Wilson-Cowan model of neural dynamics, where the response function of neurons grows faster than linearly above the threshold. The model shows a region of parameters where two attractive fixed points of the dynamics exist simultaneously. One fixed point is characterized by lower activity and scale-free critical behavior, while the second fixed point corresponds to a higher (supercritical) persistent activity, with small fluctuations around a mean value.

Dark matter elastic scattering off nuclei can result in the excitation and ionization of the recoiling atom through the so-called Migdal effect. The energy deposition from the ionization electron adds to the energy deposited by the recoiling nuclear system and allows for the detection of interactions of sub-GeV/c^{2} mass dark matter. We present new constraints for sub-GeV/c^{2} dark matter using the dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber of the DarkSide-50 experiment with an exposure of (12 306±184)  kg d.

Skeletal muscle is the largest tissue in the human body, comprising approximately 40% of body mass. After damage or injury, a healthy skeletal muscle is often fully regenerated; however, with aging and chronic diseases, the regeneration process is usually incomplete, resulting in the formation of fibrotic tissue, infiltration of intermuscular adipose tissue, and loss of muscle mass and strength, leading to a reduction in functional performance and quality of life. Accumulating evidence has shown that omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and their lipid mediators (i.

The power spectrum of brain activity is composed by peaks at characteristic frequencies superimposed to a background that decays as a power law of the frequency, [Formula: see text], with an exponent [Formula: see text] close to 1 (pink noise). This exponent is predicted to be connected with the exponent [Formula: see text] related to the scaling of the average size with the duration of avalanches of activity. "Mean field" models of neural dynamics predict exponents [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] equal or near 2 at criticality (brown noise), including the simple branching model and the fully-connected stochastic Wilson-Cowan model.

Although mid- and long-term outcomes after the Ross procedure for aortic valve disease have been increasingly improving over the years, this is still a rather challenging operation in neonates and small children. This is particularly true for patients with associated congenital heart defects and critical clinical conditions. Herein we describe the application of this procedure as a rescue operation in emergency circumstances in a low-birth-weight neonate with severe aortic stenosis, aortic regurgitation and mitral regurgitation after a previous aortic coartectomy.
