Background: The treatment of glottic cancer remains challenging, especially with regard to morbidity reduction and larynx preservation rates. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) has published guidelines to aid decision-making about this treatment according to the tumor site, clinical stage, and patient medical status.

Aim: The present review was conducted to identify changes in the NCCN guidelines for glottic cancer treatment made between 2011 and 2022 and to describe the published evidence concerning glottic cancer treatment and oncological outcomes in the same time period.

The Voice of Mothers Who Continue to Express Milk After Their Infant's Death for Donation to a Milk Bank.

The second stage of lactation with copious milk production occurs after birth regardless of the infant's survival. Previous research indicates that milk donation following a perinatal loss may help some bereaved mothers come to terms with their loss. The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of women choosing to continue to express milk after a perinatal loss specifically for donation to a nonprofit milk bank governed by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA).

NEOTROPICAL ALIEN MAMMALS: a data set of occurrence and abundance of alien mammals in the Neotropics.

Biological invasion is one of the main threats to native biodiversity. For a species to become invasive, it must be voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into a nonnative habitat. Mammals were among first taxa to be introduced worldwide for game, meat, and labor, yet the number of species introduced in the Neotropics remains unknown.

Covalent Epitope Decoration of Carbon Electrodes using Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis.

Long-term, minimally perturbative brain electrophysiology requires electrodes to seamlessly integrate into surrounding tissue. In this work, we demonstrate electrodes composed of covalently functionalized graphite, decorated with various functional affinity and epitope tags, and use them to detect changes in electrical potential on the surfaces of illuminated quantum dots and near fluorescing molecules. Affinity and epitope tagging of carbon was achieved using direct attachment of biotin and solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) of histidine (His)- and human influenza hemagglutinin (HA)-tags.

There is a growing Orthodox Jewish population in the United States and Canada. Many Orthodox Jewish families have a large number of children and choose to breastfeed. The Orthodox Jew observes Jewish laws and customs literally as dictated by the Torah.

Surface-modified three-dimensional graphene nanosheets as a stationary phase for chromatographic separation of chiral drugs.

Carbon-based stationary phases for chromatographic separation have been commercially available since the 1980s. Porous graphitic carbon liquid chromatography columns are known to be highly resistant to aggressive mobile phases and extreme pH values of solvents and eluents, an important advantage compared to conventional silica-based alternatives. In our work, we demonstrate a new variant of carbon-based stationary phases for liquid chromatography, specifically developed for chiral separation.

Design: Qualitative, phenomenological design.

Setting: The Mothers' Milk Bank in a children's hospital in the Northeastern region of the United States.

The highest incidence of relapse to smoking occurs within the first 2 weeks of a cessation attempt. In addition to enhanced nicotine craving, this phase of smoking cessation is also marked by learning and memory dysfunction. Many smokers are not able to overcome these symptoms, and they relapse to smoking shortly after trying to quit.

The relationship of obesity and weight gain to childhood teasing.

This article examines the relationship between weight gain and childhood teasing in children. Anthropometric data and self-reported teasing experiences were collected on a sample of second and third graders at a local elementary school in a disadvantaged suburban community. The study model uses bio-ecological development theory in which child development is understood in context: the child's physical characteristics influence the social environment, which interact and influence the behaviors that result in physical development and characteristics such as weight gain.

Liver × receptor ligands disrupt breast cancer cell proliferation through an E2F-mediated mechanism.

Introduction: Liver × receptors (LXRs) are members of the nuclear receptor family of ligand-dependent transcription factors and have established functions as regulators of cholesterol, glucose, and fatty acid metabolism and inflammatory responses. Published reports of anti-proliferative effects of synthetic LXR ligands on breast, prostate, ovarian, lung, skin, and colorectal cancer cells suggest that LXRs are potential targets in cancer prevention and treatment.

Methods: To further determine the effects of LXR ligands and identify their potential mechanisms of action in breast cancer cells, we carried out microarray analysis of gene expression in four breast cancer cell lines following treatments with the synthetic LXR ligand GW3965.

Biomechanical analysis of mandibular angle fractures.

Background: Clinical evidence has suggested that minimal fixation can reduce complications of mandibular angle fractures, though no detailed biomechanical model has yet explored this unique and somewhat unexpected finding.

Methods: The current study uses finite element analysis to biomechanically evaluate different fixation schemes used to fixate mandibular angle fractures. Three fixation scenarios were considered: a single tension band at the superior mandibular border, a single bicortical angle compression plate at the inferior border and the tension band and bicortical plate used together.

Identifying pollutant sources in tidally mixed systems: case study of fecal indicator bacteria from marinas in Newport Bay, southern California.

This study investigates the contribution of several marinas to fecal indicator bacteria impairment in Newport Bay, a regionally important tidal embayment in southern California. Three different fecal indicator bacteria groups were assayed, including total coliform, Escherichia coli, and enterococci bacteria, all measured using the IDEXX Colilert and Enterolert system. To document temporal variability in the fecal indicator bacteria signal, water column samples (n = 4132) were collected from two marinas over time scales ranging from hours to months.

The effect of vitamin A-fortified coconut cooking oil on the serum retinol concentration of Filipino children 4-7 years old.

A 6-month intervention trial was conducted among 542 Filipino children aged 4 to 7 years to determine the effect of vitamin A-fortified coconut cooking oil intake on their vitamin A status and to identify factors that influence this. Children were randomly assigned to the Experimental group, with vitamin A-fortified cooking oil ration; to Control-1 group with unfortified cooking oil ration; and to Control-2 group without cooking oil ration. In all groups, children's serum retinol concentration improved.

A simplified dietary assessment to identify groups at-risk for dietary vitamin A deficiency.

The study aimed 1) to develop a locally adapted SDA (simplified dietary assessment) questionnaire taking into consideration available vitamin A rich foods and portion sizes in the study sites, and 2) to compare the SDA methodology vis-a-vis the long method of dietary vitamin A assessment. Field testing of the SDA questionnaire was carried out among 433 preschoolers belonging to households with or without home gardens in 3 selected municipalities. Vitamin A status of the children was assessed using the SDA and long method of dietary evaluation.

Angioedema associated with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.

A review of two cases of angioedema associated with therapeutic doses of the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor enalapril are presented along with a review of the relevant literature. Although angioedema of the facial and oral pharyngeal regions is a relatively rare occurrence with the use of ACE inhibitors, recognition of these agents as the cause of such a condition, when subacute, can lead to a rapid cure. Knowledge of these effects may also be helpful in the management of an acute clinical manifestation and, as importantly, may help prevent a recurrent episode due to the ill-guided continuation of the drug.

In 1981, the American Board of Surgery encouraged applicants for board certification to be familiar with a variety of endoscopic techniques upon the gastrointestinal tract.
