Comparative analysis of TNF-α (-308) gene polymorphism in Turkish patients with type 2 diabetes developing nephropathy and/or neuropathy.

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a group of chronic and systemic metabolic diseases. Nephropathy (NP) and neuropathy (NR) are two common complications that severely affect the quality of life of patients with T2DM. In this study, our aim was to investigate the association between TNF-alpha (-308) gene polymorphism and the risk of developing NP and NR in patients with T2DM We also aimed to determine the association between TNF-alpha (-308) gene polymorphism and several demographic characteristics and biochemical parameters of patients with T2DM developed NP and/or NR.

Relationship between nursing students' levels of liking children and self-efficacy in paediatric medication administration.

Background: Medication management is a critical aspect of nursing, in particular with respect to paediatric patients, in whom medication errors are prevalent. Enhancing competence in this area requires not only general nursing skills but also targeted educational interventions and emotional support. Determination of complementary and alternative medicine use frequency and related factors in children with epilepsy: A descriptive Cross-Sectional study from eastern Turkey.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) methods used in epilepsy patients admitted to a paediatric neurology clinic in Turkey and to examine the factors affecting these methods.

Methods: This study was conducted between October 2022 and March 2023 by using a questionnaire form prepared in line with the literature to the parents (n = 172) of children who were under the age of 18 and who had been diagnosed with epilepsy for at least 1 year and who were followed up in the paediatric neurology outpatient clinic of a secondary care hospital in Van province of Turkey. The principles of scientific ethics and confidentiality of data were complied with in all stages of the study.

Stigma perception and health fatalism in parents of children with epilepsy: A cross-sectional study.

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the factors that affect stigma perceptions and health fatalism of parents of children with epilepsy in eastern Turkey, the relationship between these and the impact of these on their social lives.

Method: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted between August 2022 and January 2023 with the parents of children under the age of 18 who had been diagnosed with epilepsy for at least 1 year and who were followed up in the only hospital with a paediatric neurology outpatient clinic in Van province of Turkey. No sample selection was made in the study.

An EEG & eye-tracking dataset of ALS patients & healthy people during eye-tracking-based spelling system usage.

This research presents a dataset consisting of electroencephalogram and eye tracking recordings obtained from six patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in a locked-in state and one hundred seventy healthy individuals. The ALS patients exhibited varying degrees of disease progression, ranging from partial mobility and weakened speech to complete paralysis and loss of speech. Despite these physical impairments, the ALS patients retained good eye function, which allowed them to use a virtual keyboard for communication.

Metal-Enhanced Fluorescent Carbon Quantum Dots via One-Pot Solid State Synthesis for Cell Imaging.

In this study, a facile one-pot solid-state synthesis method is developed to shed light on the metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) effect in carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) hybrid materials. This is one of the few studies on the solid-state synthesis of N-doped CQDs/gold hybrid nanomaterials. We have conducted various sets of experiments to reveal the role of individual reagents during the nucleation and growth of nanoparticles.

The safety of CAR-T cells and PD-1 antibody combination on an experimental model.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells and PD-1 antibodies (PD-1 Ab) are emergent immunotherapies with unprecedented efficacy. The presence of PD-1 on T cells contributes to hypofunction of CAR-T therapy and inhibition of PD-1 enhances anti-cancer effect of CAR-T cells. Therefore, the combination of CAR-T cells and PD-1 antibody is a promissing strategy for cancer treatment.

X-ray-irradiated K562 feeder cells for expansion of functional CAR-T cells.

Immunotherapy, particularly CAR-T therapy has recently emerged as an innovator for cancer treatment. Gamma-irradiated K562 cells is a common and effective method to stimulated CAR-T cells prior to treatment. However, high cost and limited equipment of gamma-irradiation is drawback of this method.

TACSTD2 upregulation is an early reaction to lung infection.

TACSTD2 encodes a transmembrane glycoprotein Trop2 commonly overexpressed in carcinomas. While the Trop2 protein was discovered already in 1981 and first antibody-drug conjugate targeting Trop2 were recently approved for cancer therapy, the physiological role of Trop2 is still not fully understood. In this article, we show that TACSTD2/Trop2 expression is evolutionarily conserved in lungs of various vertebrates.

Annealed inhomogeneities in random ferromagnets.

We consider spin models on complex networks frequently used to model social and technological systems. We study the annealed ferromagnetic Ising model for random networks with either independent edges (Erdős-Rényi) or prescribed degree distributions (configuration model). Contrary to many physical models, the annealed setting is poorly understood and behaves quite differently than the quenched system.

Assessment of the relationship between semaphorin4D level and recurrence after catheter ablation in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Endoscopic approaches in head and neck endocrine surgery introduction of TOETVA (TransOral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy by Vestibular Approach) into clinical use at the Department of Surgery of the University Hospital in Brno.

Transoral endoscopic surgery of the thyroid and parathyroid glands is a modification of neck surgery using natural orifices. The classic approach in neck surgery is the gold standard, which we modified in 2007 by introducing Minimally Invasive Video-Assisted Thyroidectomy/Parathyroid-ectomy (MIVAT/P). We have been using TransOral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy/Parathyroidectomy by Vestibular Approach (TOETVA/TOEPVA) since the end of the last year and have operated on four patients.

Short and Midterm Outcomes in Patients With Acute Myocardial Infarction: Results of the Nationwide TURKMI Registry.

This recent Turkish Myocardial Infarction registry reported that guidelines are largely implemented in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI) in Turkey. We aimed to obtain up-to-date information for short- and midterm outcomes of acute MI. Fifty centers were selected using probability sampling, and all consecutive patients with acute MI admitted to these centers (between November 1 and 16, 2018) were enrolled.

Treatment delays and in-hospital outcomes in acute myocardial infarction during the COVID-19 pandemic: A nationwide study.

Objective: Delayed admission of myocardial infarction (MI) patients is an important prognostic factor. In the present nationwide registry (TURKMI-2), we evaluated the treatment delays and outcomes of patients with acute MI during the Covid-19 pandemic and compaired with a recentpre-pandemic registry (TURKMI-1).

Methods: The pandemic and pre-pandemic studies were conducted prospectively as 15-day snapshot registries in the same 48 centers.

Despite prophylactic anticoagulant treatments, thrombotic complications may develop in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study aimed to evaluate the factors influencing anti-factor Xa activity in COVID-19 patients receiving low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). We prospectively evaluated 80 COVID-19 patients, diagnosed using polymerase chain reaction test, who were admitted to our clinic and administered LMWH; LMWH (enoxaparin) was applied according to the weight, D-dimer levels, and clinical condition of patients.

Novel anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective effects of the human melanocortin MC1 receptor agonist BMS-470539 dihydrochloride and human melanocortin MC3 receptor agonist PG-990 on lipopolysaccharide activated chondrocytes.

Human melanocortin MC1 and MC3 receptors expressed on C-20/A4 chondrocytes exhibit chondroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects when activated by melanocortin peptides. Nearly 9 million people in the UK suffer from osteoarthritis, and bacterial infections play a role in its development. Here, we evaluate the effect of a panel of melanocortin peptides with different selectivity for human melanocortin MC1 (α-MSH, BMS-470539 dihydrochloride) and MC3 ([DTrp]-γ-MSH, PG-990) receptors and C-terminal peptide α-MSH(KPV), on inhibiting LPS-induced chondrocyte death, pro-inflammatory mediators and induction of anti-inflammatory proteins.

Lymphomas and acute abdomen - a set of case reports.

Surgical treatment of gastrointestinal solid tumors is the basic method with a curative potential. However, the first-line treatment modalities in lymphomas are systemic oncology therapy (chemotherapy, immunotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation), radiotherapy or their combination. Surgery in lymphomas is predominantly associated with acute disease and dominantly, surgery is still used mainly in diagnosing lymphomas.

Acute hiatal hernias.

Introduction: In surgical practice, hiatal hernias are often related to gastro esophageal reflux disease treatment in which continuous proton pump inhibitor administration is very successful. In large hiatal hernias, life threatening complications may occur. However, planned surgical repair of hiatal hernias is associated with very good functional outcomes with a low risk of postoperative complications.

Spontaneous retroperitoneal hematoma - our experience with surgical approach.

Spontaneous retroperitoneal hematoma is a serious complication of anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy. Its incidence has increased in recent years due to an increasing number of patients on this treatment. A number of case series have been described in the literature.
