To perform preimplantation DNA diagnosis for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in a female carrier of a dystrophin gene deletion of exons 3-18, we developed a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay of exon 17 sequences. Exon 17 was efficiently amplified in all 50 single blastomeres of normal control embryos and in five blastomeres of one male embryo of the DMD carrier obtained after a first preimplantation diagnosis (PID) for gender determination. In ten blastomeres of another two male embryos of the DMD carrier, no PCR signals were observed, probably as a result of the deletion.

A total of 134 infertile patients undergoing hysteroscopic myomectomy by resectoscope or by Nd: YAG laser or by scissors have been collectively recorded. Of these, 79 (58.

The present report covers the results of a 38-month period in which 2853 consecutive intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles were performed in 1953 couples. These couples were afflicted with male factor infertility and had at least one previous failed conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment cycle. In other couples, the husband had semen parameters incompatible with conventional IVF or suffered from excretory or secretory azoospermia where it was possible to recover spermatozoa by microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration (mesa) or by testicular sperm extraction (tese) procedure.

Design: Prospective randomized study.
Setting: Consenting patients in an academic research environment.
Objective: To investigate the pregnancy rate of frozen-thawed human supernumerary multicellular embryos that were cryopreserved after intracytoplasmic sperm injection or IVF.
Design: A clinical study.
Setting: Consenting patients in an academic research environment.
Background: Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the male breast is an uncommon disease, accounting for approximately 7% of all male breast carcinomas. Compared with invasive carcinomas of the breast, the prognosis associated with DCIS in men is excellent; however, clinical features, pathology, and treatment of this disease are not well defined in the literature.
Methods: Records of 23 men with carcinoma of the breast treated at the Lahey Clinic from 1968 to 1991 were reviewed, revealing 4 patients with pure DCIS (17%).
In order to enhance fertilization in vitro, pentoxifylline (PTX) was used in couples showing low fertilization rates in previous in-vitro fertilization (IVF) attempts for the treatment of male-factor infertility. Sibling oocytes were inseminated at random with spermatozoa prepared with or without PTX. After selection by Percoll gradient, sperm samples were divided into two equal aliquots.

Data concerning the evolution and outcome of pregnancies were retrieved in 52 cases, which involved 39 women with ovarian failure and 18 with functional ovaries. The most frequent complications of pregnancy were uterine bleeding in the first trimester in 18 cases (34.

To evaluate the influence on the endometrium, endometrial development in GnRH agonist/HMG stimulated cycles was assessed in cycles with and without luteal phase supplementation. Endometrial histological maturation, ultrastructure and oestrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) status were analysed in the mid-luteal phase.

The results of 600 consecutive treatment cycles of subzonal insemination (SUZI) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) are described in couples with failed fertilization after standard IVF or insufficient spermatozoa in the ejaculate for IVF. More oocytes were damaged by ICSI (16.3%) than by SUZI (8.

Although considered as mildly pathogenic for people living in endemic areas, its appearance in other places might be a cause for concern. We report here the unusual finding of Loa loa microfilariae in the follicular aspirate of a 35-year-old black women during oocyte retrieval for in-vitro fertilization.

Design: Retrospective case series.
Setting: In vitro fertilization program of the Centre for Reproductive Medicine of the Dutch-speaking Brussels Free University, Belgium, which is a tertiary referral institution.
In a retrospective study (1985-1989) based on data from the Centre for Reproductive Medicine in Brussels, a total of 23 ectopic pregnancies (2.24%) occurred after 3800 embryo, zygote or gamete transfers. This number was low compared with the data published elsewhere.

In order to simplify the anaesthetic procedure into a minimally invasive one, we perform the oocyte retrieval under a modified para-cervical block combined with a standard pre-medication. In order to maximize the patient's comfort we evaluated two different local anaesthetics and their side-effects.

Design: A retrospective analysis of 300 consecutive cycles of assisted fertilization concerning 202 infertile couples was performed. One hundred fifty-three couples underwent 362 unsuccessful IVF cycles, whereas on 49 couples IVF was not performed because of poor sperm characteristics.
A prospective randomized study was conducted to evaluate the use of adding oestradiol valerate 6 mg per os daily to intravaginal micronized progesterone (600 mg daily) as luteal supplements. The study comprised 378 infertile women superovulated with a gonadotrophin releasing-hormone agonist (GnRHa) and human menopausal gonadotrophins (HMG) for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or zygote intra-Fallopian transfer (ZIFT). The clinical pregnancy rate was similar (29%) whether or not oestradiol valerate was added to intravaginal progesterone.

In the desensitization protocol the luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) stimulated serum LH and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations remained impaired at least until day 14 after arrest of the agonist. In the flare-up protocol basal and stimulated LH secretion was still abnormal on days 14 and 15 after human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) injection.

The authors undertook a randomised prospective trial of supplementation by progesterone of the luteal phase and of early pregnancy in two hundred and seventy two patients requiring fertilisation in vitro (FIV), gamete inter-fallopian transfer (GIFT) or zygote inter-fallopian transfer (ZIFT). Either progesterone in solution in oil (50 mg/day) administered by intramuscular injection or micronized progesterone administered intra-vaginally (600 mg/d) were used as support for the luteal phase.

In view of the increasing number of laparoscopic interventions and the concern with reducing post-operative adhesions, we evaluated the possibility of Interceed delivery through the ancillary trocars. Twenty-four patients underwent operative laparoscopy followed by the application of Interceed.
