A study of PGP 9.5 immunohistochemical labeling on formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissues for epidermal nerve fiber density testing.

There have been several methods established for immunohistochemical labeling of the PGP 9.5 antigen in human tissue for the assessment of epidermal nerve fiber density, none of which uses neutral-buffered formalin as the preferred fixative for paraffin-embedded tissue. The literature maintains that formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissues are unable to be used for this purpose and that other fixatives must be used due to the cross-linkages caused by formalin fixation.
