Background: Self-efficacy alludes to personal competence in an individual's effectiveness when facing stressful situations. This construct has been related to different domains of the health field, finding that high levels of self-efficacy benefit human functioning and enhance well-being.

Methods: The present study aimed to determine the psychometric properties of the self-efficacy scale for managing chronic diseases (SEMCD-S) by assessing factorial, convergent and divergent validity, reliability, and measurement invariance.

Glycan expression in chorionic villi from histocultures of women with early-onset preeclampsia: Immunomodulatory effects on peripheral natural killer cells.

New evidence suggests that glycan expression in placental cells of women with invasive disorders of pregnancy differs from that in normal pregnant women. Hypothesizing that modifications of glycan expression could account for the course of preeclampsia, we established placental villous histocultures and compared glycan expression in women with preeclampsia with that in normal pregnant women and also in syncytialized BeWo cells, and we tested the effect of glycan expression on the functional phenotypes of circulating natural killer (NK) cells. Histocultures of third-trimester placentae from women with preeclampsia and full-term placentae from healthy pregnant women and BeWo choriocarcinoma cells were assessed for the expression of terminal glycans by lectin-binding assays.

Medical imaging techniques play a central role in clinical oncology, helping to obtain important information about the extent of disease, and plan treatment. Advanced imaging modalities such as Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (PET/CT), may help in the whole-body staging in a single procedure, although the lesions should be carefully interpreted. PET/CT is becoming commonly used in canine cancer patients, but there is still limited information available on specific tumors such as mammary cancer.

We have previously reported that its hydro- ethanolic rhizome extract possess sedative, anxiolytic and anti-aggressive-like effects in mice. Glutamate, the main excitatory transmitter in the vertebrate brain, exerts its actions through the activation of specific membrane receptors present in neurons and glial cells. Over-stimulation of glutamate receptors results in neuronal death, phenomena known as excitotoxicity. A family of glutamate uptake systems, mainly expressed in glial cells, removes the amino acid from the synaptic cleft preventing an excessive glutamatergic stimulation and thus neuronal damage.

Context: Heterotopic pancreas is defined as ectopic pancreatic tissue without vascular or anatomic continuity with the normal pancreas. The spleen is a rare site of origin. This case report describes a patient with a malignant insulinoma which originated from an intrasplenic heterotopic pancreas.
