Research was conducted to assess the impact of oiling on fresh-marsh plant communities and to test the efficacy of techniques that may be used to enhance the bioremediation of crude oil spills in these environments while minimizing secondary anthropogenic impacts. To emulate field conditions, a mesocosm facility was used that houses 120 mesocosm vessels, each of 200-1 capacity. A five-way factorial treatment arrangement was used that included two substrates (inorganic, organic), two nutrient regimes (fertilized, not fertilized), two aeration levels (substrate aeration, no aeration), three oiling concentrations (0-, 5-, 10-1 m(-2) of South Louisiana Sweet Crude oil), and four vascular plant species (Alternanthera philoxeroides, Panicum hemitomon, Phragmites australis, Sagittaria lancifolia, and an unplanted control).

Objective: The aim of our work has been the study and comparison of diffusion capacity of CO (DLCO) in two different clinical situations: bronchial asthma and diabetes mellitus.

Method: We have studied 16 control subjects, 38 patients with bronchial asthma and 65 patients with diabetes mellitus. We performed CO pulmonary diffusion tests by single breath method to determine two components: membrane diffusion factor (Dm) and pulmonary capillary blood volume (Vc).

Objectives: We retrospectively analyzed the predictive factors of successfully electrical cardioversion in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation.

Methods: We included 118 patients, 68 men and 50 women, with a mean age of 65.1 years and a length of arrhythmia evolution of 83.

The oligopeptides microcystins and nodularins are the most common and abundant cyanotoxins present in diverse water systems. They cause different illnesses in animal and humans, sometimes leading to death, and are responsible for severe environmental problems. Here we demonstrate that both microcystin-LR and N.

We are presenting a new questionnaire to evaluate the functional and aesthetic aspects after reconstruction of defects of the lower lip resulting from tumor excision. The questionnaire is based on objective parameters with numerical values. The application of the questionnaire is carried out based on 2 different surgical techniques, which have been used in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of La Princesa University Hospital in Madrid.

Plant-endoparasitic root-knot nematodes feed on specialized giant cells that they induce in the vascular cylinder of susceptible plants. Although it has been established that a number of plant genes change their expression pattern during giant cell differentiation, virtually no data are available about the mechanisms involved in that change. One possibility is differential promoter recognition by the transcription factor(s) responsible for the expression of specific genes.

We present a patient with iliac vein stenosis and thrombosis, which occurred 2 weeks after renal transplantation and were secondary to a perivascular hematic collection. The vein stenosis was identified by color Doppler ultrasonography and venography. Computed tomography demonstrated a perivascular collection.

The widespread use of central venous catheters in children has increased thrombotic complications that warrant thrombolytic therapy. We report the cases of two infants, aged four and two months, with a mobile thrombus in the right atrium treated with recombinant tissue-plasminogen-activator (rt-PA) infused by a central venous catheter. Clot dissolution was obtained in both patients in eight and 44 hours, respectively.

We report the first case of Epstein Barr virus (EBV) positive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma occurring 20 years after continuous phenytoin therapy for idiopathic epilepsy. This malignant lymphoproliferative disease was preceded by an phenytoin-associated benign reactive lymphadenopathy. Serological findings suggested a chronic active EBV infection.

Background: Typing at species level of Mycobacterium is usually performed by microbiological and biochemical methods that require a long time and/or sufficient amount of bacteria. Molecular biology can avoid these problems using different techniques.

Methods: A colony growth of the following mycobacteria has been analyzed: M.

A case of 66-year-old woman with cardiac tamponade and bilateral pulmonary infiltrates is reported. These infiltrates were "pseudonodulars" and confluent. We practice pericardiocentesis and a hemorrhagic fluid is pulled out.

We report a 28-year-old patient with an acute myocardial infarction, without previous symptomatology of ischemic heart disease, 5 hours after a delivery. We discuss the role of methylergometrine, used for avoid the bleeding postpartum, in its etiopathology and its specific therapy.

The natural history of symptomatic adult type I Arnold-Chiari (ACM1) malformation is variable. Patients with this condition frequently develop corticospinal and sensory deficits, together with cerebellar signs and lower cranial nerve palsies in various combinations. In the present report we describe a patient with ACM1 in whom sleep apnea together with disturbances in the central regulation of arterial pressure were a major component of the symptomatology.

We present a patient with swallowing syncope. The esophageal manometric examination showed a diffuse spasm. This induces a vagovagal reflex mediated by tensoreceptors from the esophageal wall, which block the AV and/or sinus nodes.

We here describe the case of a patient with a history of exposure to esparto grass for two and a half years, who presented with clinical symptoms, radiological signs, pulmonary function test and histological findings consistent with the diagnosis of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Signs and symptoms reappeared after re-exposure. There are few reports of stipatosis in the world literature.
