Background: Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) at interval cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer improves overall survival but its role in recurrent disease is uncertain. We aimed to compare outcomes in patients treated with or without HIPEC during surgery for recurrent ovarian cancer.

Methods: The multicentre, open-label, randomised, phase 3 CHIPOR trial was conducted at 31 sites in France, Belgium, Spain, and Canada, and enrolled patients with first relapse of epithelial ovarian cancer at least 6 months after completing platinum-based chemotherapy.

Background: Biochar is a relatively new development in sustainable agricultural management that can be applied to ameliorate degraded and less fertile soils, especially sandy-textured ones, to improve their productivity with respect to crop production through improved nutrient availability. However, as the literature has shown, the response of sandy-textured soils to biochar varies in terms of effect size and direction. Therefore, the present study systematically reviewed the available evidence to synthesize the impact of biochar amendments on aspects of the nutrient cycle of sandy-textured soils.

Purpose: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the mandible remains a significant complication in the intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) era. Dental dose cannot be predicted from heterogeneous IMRT dose distributions; mandibular dose metrics cannot guide dentist avulsion decisions in high-risk ORN situations. Using a mapping tool to report dental root dose, avulsions, and ORN sites, we re-examined ORN risk factors in a case-control study.

Background: In hormone-sensitive oligorecurrent prostate cancer (PC), the literature showed [68Ga]Ga-PSMA (PSMA) and [18F]F-choline (FCH) PET/CT can successfully guide metastasis-directed therapies (MDT). This observational retrospective study aimed to explore, in routine use, the impact of FCH or PSMA PET/CT in guiding MDT for hormone-sensitive oligometastatic PC at different recurrences.

Methods: In 2017-2020, patients initially treated with radical prostatectomy but, in biochemical recurrence (with PSA ≤ 2 ng/mL), diagnosed as oligometastatic based on FCH or PSMA PET/CT, were identified.

Article Synopsis
  • Transcatheter arterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is used for treating liver cancer patients who can't undergo curative therapies; this study compared TACE alone with TACE combined with external conformal radiotherapy (CRT).
  • The trial involved 120 participants, mostly older males with alcohol-related liver issues, and aimed to assess liver progression-free survival (PFS) over 12 and 18 months.
  • Results indicated that while the combined treatment (TACE + CRT) showed better local control, it did not significantly improve PFS or overall survival compared to TACE alone, and led to more serious liver-related side effects.

Article Synopsis
  • - Geriatric assessment (GA) helps predict treatment tolerance and survival in older cancer patients, but data on its real-world use is limited.
  • - A study focused on patients over 75 with metastatic prostate cancer found that only 38.9% of those who should have undergone GA actually did.
  • - Key barriers to implementing GA include lack of systematic screening, limited availability of geriatric specialists, and missed referrals, leading to underutilization in clinical practice.

The aim of this multicentric study was to prospectively compare 68Ga-DOTANOC PET/CT versus somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (SRS) with SPECT/CT, combined with multiphasic CT scan and MRI in patients with grade 1 or 2 gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NET). Patients with histologically proven grade 1 or 2 GEP-NET with suspicion of recurrence or progression, or with typical aspects of GEP-NET on morphological imaging, were explored with conventional imaging (CI): SRS with SPECT/CT, multiphasic CT scan and/or liver MRI followed by 68Ga-DOTANOC PET/CT. The gold standard was based on histology and imaging follow-up.

X-linked dystonia-parkinsonism (XDP) is a progressive adult-onset neurodegenerative disorder caused by insertion of a SINE-VNTR-Alu (SVA) retrotransposon in the TAF1 gene. The SVA retrotransposon contains a CCCTCT hexameric repeat tract of variable length, whose length is inversely correlated with age at onset. This places XDP in a broader class of repeat expansion diseases, characterized by the instability of their causative repeat mutations.
