In human breast cancer the mitochondrial translocator protein (TSPO) aids pro-survival cellular response by facilitating the formation of mitochondrial contact sites with the nucleus termed Nucleus Associated Mitochondria (NAM). Here, we show that TSPO positively associates with the aggressiveness of tissues and cells isolated from Canine Mammary Tumours (CMTs). TSPO is also readily upregulated in reprogrammed mammary tumour cells following long-term deprivation of oestrogen or exposure to the endocrine chemotherapeutic (ET) agent Tamoxifen.

Membrane contact sites (MCS) between mitochondria and the nucleus have been recently described. Termed nucleus associated mitochondria (NAM), they prime the expression of genes required for cellular resistance to stressors, thus offering a tethering mechanism for homeostatic communication. Here, we discuss the composition of NAM and their physiological and pathological significance.

Mesothelioma is a type of late-onset cancer that develops in cells covering the outer surface of organs. Although it can affect the peritoneum, heart, or testicles, it mainly targets the lining of the lungs, making pleural mesothelioma (PMe) the most common and widely studied mesothelioma type. PMe is caused by exposure to fibres of asbestos, which when inhaled leads to inflammation and scarring of the pleura.

Donor-derived infections (DDIs) caused by carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacteria (CR-GNB) in solid organ transplant recipients are potentially life-threatening. In this prospective study, we evaluated the incidence, factors associated with transmission, and the outcome of recipients with unexpected CR-GNB DDIs after the implementation of our local active surveillance system (LASS). LASS provides for early detection of unexpected donor CR-GNB infections, prophylaxis of recipients at high risk, and early diagnosis and treatment of DDIs.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important regulators of embryonic stem cell (ESC) biology, and their study has identified key regulatory mechanisms. To find novel pathways regulated by miRNAs in ESCs, we undertook a bioinformatics analysis of gene pathways differently expressed in the absence of miRNAs due to the deletion of , which encodes an RNase that is essential for the synthesis of miRNAs. One pathway that stood out was Ca signaling.

Apicoplasts are critical for the growth of medically important parasites. It is now reported that they form contacts with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) via two pore channels thus enabling Ca trafficking. This highlights the dynamic physical association between organelles as a critical motif in Ca signaling.

Apoptosis is a form of regulated cell death (RCD) that involves proteases of the caspase family. Pharmacological and genetic strategies that experimentally inhibit or delay apoptosis in mammalian systems have elucidated the key contribution of this process not only to (post-)embryonic development and adult tissue homeostasis, but also to the etiology of multiple human disorders. Consistent with this notion, while defects in the molecular machinery for apoptotic cell death impair organismal development and promote oncogenesis, the unwarranted activation of apoptosis promotes cell loss and tissue damage in the context of various neurological, cardiovascular, renal, hepatic, infectious, neoplastic and inflammatory conditions.

Cognitive-motor training could be used to improve open-skill sport performances, increasing cognitive demands to stimulate executive function (EF) development. Nevertheless, a distributed training proposal for the improvement of EFs is increasingly difficult to combine with seasonal sport commitments. This study aimed to investigate whether a massed basketball training program enriched with Fitlight training can improve EFs and motor performance.

Background: BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations are responsible for 5% of breast cancer (BC) and 10-15% of ovarian cancer (EOC). The presence of a germline mutation and therefore the identification of subjects at high risk of developing cancer should ideally precede the onset of the disease, so that appropriate surveillance and risk-reducing treatments can be proposed. In this study, we revisited the family history (FH) of women who tested positive for BRCA mutations after being diagnosed with BC or EOC.
