Background: The incidence of non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) increased over last decades, probably due to environmental concerns or to the increase of frail patients with age related comorbidities. Currently, the relationship of increasing global skin cancer rates with increased ultraviolet radiations (UVRs) resulting from stratospheric ozone depletion, global warming, and air pollution from fossil-fuel combustion.

Aims: We conducted a retrospective epidemiological study including 546 NMSC patients managed at the Dermatology Unit of the Tor Vergata Hospital to highlight different trends of sun exposure or different comorbidities.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to estimate the prognostic value of some features documented on preoperative MRI study in patients with acute cervical spinal cord injury.

Methods: The study was conducted in patients operated for cervical spinal cord injury (cSCI) from April 2014 to October 2020. The quantitative analysis on preoperative MRI scans included: length of the spinal cord intramedullary lesion (IMLL the canal diameter at the level of maximal spinal cord compression (MSCC) and the presence of intramedullary hemorrhage.

Article Synopsis
  • Moyamoya is a rare brain artery disease that causes strokes and TIAs in children, either on its own (MMD) or alongside other conditions (MMS), accounting for 6-10% of these incidents.
  • The study was conducted on 65 pediatric patients in Italy to analyze how the disease presents, progresses, is treated, and its outcomes.
  • Findings revealed that most patients had symptoms (82%), many experienced strokes or TIAs, and 73% underwent surgery; however, 20% had subsequent strokes, and at follow-up, 43% had motor deficits, 31% intellectual disabilities, and other complications.

The impact of reperfusion therapies on cognition has been poorly explored and little knowledge exists. We explored the influence of endovascular treatment (EVT) on cognitive outcome in patients with anterior circulation ischemic stroke. Patients presenting with ischemic stroke due to anterior large vessel occlusion who underwent intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) alone or EVT plus IVT were recruited.

Objective: The repositioning of an autologous bone flap after decompressive craniectomy (DC) for traumatic intracranial hypertension remains the first-line treatment for cranial reconstruction. Aseptic autologous bone flap resorption (BFR) is the most frequent complication. The identification of possible predictive parameters for BFR would help to improve the management of these patients.

Background: We describe the case of a 62-year-old woman who was admitted to our center for acute diplopia secondary to a left III cranial nerve palsy, left eyelid swelling and ptosis, and mild ipsilateral retroorbital pain. No other motor or sensitive deficits were observed.

Case Description: Computed tomography angiography and digital subtraction angiography were performed, showing a 25-mm left intracavernous aneurysm with a central intrasaccular thrombus, an intrasaccular "swirling" flow with a donut-shape appearance.

Background: Venous thromboembolism, a spectrum of diseases ranging from deep venous thrombosis to pulmonary embolism, is a major source of morbidity and mortality. The majority of cases described in plastic surgery involve abdominoplasty. Risk assessment and prophylaxis are paramount in such patients.

To assess the welfare of cats at the veterinary clinic and how caregivers and veterinarians affect it, a survey of Italian cat guardians (n = 1,111) was conducted using a 28-item multichoice questionnaire. Most cats showed impaired welfare during all stages of a clinic visit: before entering, in the waiting room, moving to the examination room, on the examination table, and after returning home. A relationship was found between welfare states in each stage.

Background: The use of a transverse pattern for perforator flap design and its possible clinical applications in the field of lower leg reconstruction are previously unreported in the medical literature. The purpose of this report is to describe our clinical experience with the use of transversally oriented pedicled perforator flaps in lower leg reconstruction.

Patients And Methods: Seven patients underwent lower leg reconstruction with transversally oriented pedicled perforator flaps.

Breast implant exposure due to poor tissue coverage or previous irradiation represents a surgical challenge both in the reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery practice. In case of implant extrusion or incipient exposure, the commonly suggested strategies, such as targeted antibiotic therapy, drainage and lavage of the cavity, fistulectomy, and primary closure, may be ineffective leading the surgeon to an unwanted implant removal or to adopt more invasive flap coverage procedures. Breast implant capsule, in its physiological clinical behavior, can be considered as a new reliable source of tissue, which can be used in a wide range of clinical situations.

Resurfacing of soft tissue defects consequent to skin cancer, melanoma, or sarcoma excision in different anatomical districts represents a difficult challenge for the plastic surgeon. Classic reconstructive procedures are frequently charged by unsatisfactory results. The introduction of perforator flaps in the clinical practice represented a revolution in the field of reconstructive plastic surgery.
