The primary economic activity of the municipality of Poconé, Central-West Brazil, is the production of gold. In an attempt to reduce exposure to metallic mercury, schools in that location conduct educative programs directed towards their students. A questionnaire used to evaluate the efficacy of these programs with respect to adolescents' comprehension concerning exposure to mercury was developed in 2007.

With the aim of analyzing the adequacy of the information on visceral leishmaniasis that is available through Brazilian portals, a survey was conducted through a search portal, with selection and analysis of electronic page content. Twenty-four pages with informative purposes were identified, of which eight belonged to government bodies, 10 were commercial and six were classified as others. Using a systematized analysis form, the content of topics considered essential, relating to transmission, reservoirs, control and disease, was evaluated.

Gallic acid and gallates with the same number of hydroxyl groups and varying the length of the side carbon chain, with respective lipophilicity being defined through the ClogP values, were examined for their ability to induce apoptosis (through the DNA ladder fragmentation pattern), mitochondrial and cytoplasmic GSH depletion and NF-kappaB activation in murine lymphoblastic L1210 leukemia cells. A relationship between cytotoxic effect and a limited degree of lipophilicity was observed.
