Relationships of the vidian nerve and internal carotid artery: MRI and intraoperative surgical evaluation.

Objective: Skull base anatomy around the internal carotid artery (ICA) is extremely complex. Among anatomical landmarks studied, the vidian canal has been thoroughly evaluated, unlike the vidian nerve (VN). Our aim is to evaluate the VN-ICA relationships, and understand their role in terms of surgical planning.

Reaction of the carbonate Sibillini Mountains Basal aquifer (Central Italy) to the extensional 2016-2017 seismic sequence.

Hydrogeological perturbations in response to earthquakes are widely described worldwide. In carbonate aquifers, a post-seismic discharge increase is often attributed to an increase of bulk permeability due to co-seismic fracturing and the attention on the role of faults to explain the diversion of groundwater is increasing. We focus on the reaction of carbonate hydrogeological basins to extensional seismicity, taking as an example the effects of the Central Italy 2016-2017 seismic sequence, on the Basal aquifer of the Sibillini Mountains area.

Middle Ear Neuroendocrine Adenoma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Neuroendocrine adenomas of the middle ear are rare tumors that represent less than 2% of primary tumors of the ear. In this paper, we describe a case of a 40-year-old woman who developed neuroendocrine adenoma of the middle ear. The specific management strategy for this rare tumor is unclear; information in the available literature on the management of this tumor is varied.

Bone Anchored Hearing Aids for the Treatment of Asymmetric Hearing Loss.

Objectives: Asymmetric hearing loss is generally defined as a moderate-to-profound hearing loss in the poorer ear and a mild-to-moderate hearing loss in the better ear. Application of a bone conduction hearing aid is one of the possible treatments for the poorer ear in asymmetric hearing loss. However, the device essentially stimulates the contralateral better ear, precluding true binaural hearing.

Comparison of a purely endoscopic three-layer technique versus pericranial flap for reconstruction of anterior skull base defects after sino-nasal tumor resection: assessment of postoperative frontal lobe sagging and frontal lobe falling.

Background: The evolution of endoscopic skull base approaches has enabled surgeons to manage selected skull base tumors through a transnasal endoscope-assisted approach. On the other side, more extensive lesions may require a combined cranioendoscopic approach. In this paper, we analysed and compared the incidence of frontal lobe sagging after endoscopic multilayer (EM) reconstruction versus pericranial flap (PF) reconstruction.

"Tailored" approach to selected recurrent cranio-cervical chordomas: experience and lessons learned.

Background: Among chordoma patients, recurrent cases are by far more complex to be managed, and cranio-cervical junction (CCJ) localizations represent a particular challenge due to the complexity of the anatomical region which makes it difficult to obtain a radical resection.

Methodology: We report our personal experience in treating four patients with recurrent CCJ chordoma with "personalized" multiportal and eventually multistage approaches.

Conclusions: Endoscopic endonasal approaches have gained widespread acceptance and are considered the workhorse in most cases of craniocervical junction chordomas.

Skull-Base Inflammatory Pseudotumor Involving the Trigeminal and Facial Nerves: A Singular Presentation of a Rare Disease.

Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) is a rare disease that is often misinterpreted as a lymphoma or carcinoma. It may involve different body regions but most commonly the lungs and the orbital cavity. We report the case of a patient affected by an IPT of the trigeminal and facial nerves.

Transoral robotic tongue base reduction and supraglottoplasty combined with maxillomandibular advancement: a new option for selected sleep apnea patients? Preliminary report.

Purpose: Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) and maxillo-mandibular advancement (MMA) are effective options for obstructive sleep apnea patients. Identification of the correct candidate is by far the most important item in achieving a succesful outcome. As a consequence, not all patients can be managed successfully via one or the other procedure.

Syringocystadenoma Papilliferum of the External Auditory Canal.

BACKGROUND Ceruminous glands are modified apocrine glands, situated in the external auditory canal, that, together with sebaceous glands, produce cerumen, better known as ear wax. The neoplastic transformation of these structures is very rare and there have been few cases reported in the literature. CASE REPORT Syringocystadenoma papilliferum is one of the rarest tumors among benign tumors arising from the ceruminous glands.
