Percutaneous nephrostomy can be an effective means of preventing irreparable renal damage from obstructive renal disease thereby providing patients with more time to access treatment to remove the source of the blockage. In sub-Saharan Africa, where there is limited access to treatments such as dialysis and transplantation, a nephrostomy can be life-saving. Training this procedure in simulation can allow trainees to develop their technical skills without risking patient safety, but still requires an ex-pert observer to provide performative feedback.

A key lesson from the west Africa (2014-16) Ebola disease epidemic was that outbreak responses fail when they respond to patients through a narrow clinical lens without considering the broader community and social context of care. Here, in the second of two Series papers on the modern landscape of Ebola disease, we review progress made in the last decade to improve patient-centred care. Although the biosafety imperatives of treating Ebola disease remain, recent advances show how to mitigate these so that patients are cared for in a safe and dignified manner that encourages early treatment-seeking behaviour and provides support after the return of patients to their communities.

  • Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing (ESBL-) bacteria are a major public health issue due to their widespread resistance to multiple antibiotics, particularly among broiler chickens in Dakar, Senegal.
  • A study found that 61.7% of broilers carried ESBL- in their cecum, with antibiotic tests revealing high resistance rates to various β-lactam antibiotics but full susceptibility to imipenem.
  • The research indicates significant multidrug resistance and the presence of multiple ESBL genes, highlighting the risk of human transmission through the food supply and the need for better surveillance and intervention strategies.

This study documents the experiences of health system personnel in the implementation of mass distribution campaigns for the control of lymphatic filariasis in rural Guinea. This was an exploratory qualitative study using data collected from implementing actors of mass distribution campaigns in the Boké health district. The results showed four main facilitators of mass distribution campaign rollout in the Boké health district: (i) support to the district teams in the organization of the campaigns; (ii) involvement of community-based associations in social mobilization; (iii) strong adherence of the communities to the different mass distribution campaigns, facilitated through the involvement of community relays, who are members of these communities, in the distribution of drugs; and (iv) transparency in the allocation of incentives to drug dispensers and supervisors.

Following an application from Alzchem Trostberg GmbH, submitted for authorisation of a health claim pursuant to Article 13(5) of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 via the Competent Authority of Austria, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver an opinion on the scientific substantiation of a health claim related to creatine and improvement in cognitive function. The Panel considers that the food constituent, creatine, is sufficiently characterised. An improvement in cognitive function in one or more of its domains is a beneficial physiological effect.

Genetic polymorphisms in drug metabolizing enzymes, drug transporters as well as in genes encoding the human major histocompatibility complex contribute to inter-individual differences in drug efficacy and safety. The extent, pattern and complexity of such pharmacogenetic variation differ drastically across human populations. Here, we present PharmFreq, a global repository of pharmacogenetic frequency information that aggregates frequency data of 658 allelic variants from over 10 million individuals collected from >1200 studies across 144 countries.

Background: Sitting time (ST) constitutes a significant aspect of sedentary behavior, and its worldwide escalation raises concerns regarding public health. International guidelines recommend limiting sedentary time and replacing it with physical activity (PA) to reduce the risk of diseases and mortality. This study examines the impact of replacing ST with PA on all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer mortality in a representative cohort of the population of Spain.

The objective of this study is to investigate the association between different volumes of accelerometer-measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and functional fitness in older adults in a cross-sectional study (n = 242; 66 ± 5 years; 80% women). MVPA was assessed by accelerometer for 1 week. Based on the MVPA recommendations, the participants were classified as: (a) inactive (<50 min/week), (b) somewhat active (50-99 min/week), (c) moderately active (100-149 min/week), and (d) active (≥150 min/week).

Background: Orange juices are widely known for their organoleptic characteristics and potential health benefits derived from their nutritional and functional composition.

Objectives: The aim of this work was to provide comprehensive, up-to-date information on the content of folates and some minerals (Ca, K, Mg, Fe, Mn, and Zn) present in different fresh and commercial orange juices available in the European market, including juices from concentrate (FC) and not from concentrate (NFC).

Methods: A total of twenty-five juice samples were selected, comprising the most purchased types of commercial juices from France, the United Kingdom (UK), Germany, and Spain, and four fresh squeezed juices (FSJ) made from Spanish oranges.

  • The study investigated the effectiveness and safety of the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine against Zaire Ebolavirus disease among contacts of EVD survivors, focusing on the influence of pre-existing immunity on vaccination outcomes.
  • Ten percent of participants had pre-existing antibodies, but both those with and without antibodies showed significant increases in IgG levels post-vaccination, indicating strong immune responses.
  • The findings support the vaccine's safety and suggest that pre-vaccination antibody screening is unnecessary, as it does not negatively impact the immune response to the vaccine.
