Background: Pituitary apoplexy (PA) is a clinical syndrome of pituitary hemorrhage or infarction and can result in hypopituitarism as well as compression of adjacent brain structures. Visual loss occurs frequently, as a result of tumor expansion and compression of the optic chiasm and optic nerves. Additionally, with pituitary tumor invasion into the fixed space of the cavernous sinus, compression of multiple cranial nerves can result in cavernous sinus syndrome (CSS).

Summary: Mass effect from a goiter is a serious complication with potentially life-threatening consequences. In rare instances, a goiter can compress nearby vessels, compromising cerebral blood flow, which can lead to an ischemic stroke. Ischemic strokes generally occur due to atherogenic or embolic phenomenon, albeit a rare etiology can be due to a mechanical obstruction of great vessels of the neck that provide blood supply to the brain.

During phosphate starvation, Snf1-related kinase 1 (SnRK1) activity significantly decreases compared with plants growing under normal nutritional conditions. An analysis of the expression of the genes encoding for the catalytic subunits of SnRK1 showed that these subunits were not affected by phosphate starvation. Transgenic Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) plants overexpressing the AKIN10 and AKIN11 catalytic subunits fused with green fluorescent protein (GFP) were produced, and their localizations were mainly chloroplastic with low but detectable signals in the cytoplasm.

Type A response regulators are a family of genes in Arabidopsis thaliana involved primarily in cytokinin signal transduction. A member of this family was isolated from a cDNA library constructed from bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) grown under conditions of phosphate starvation. The complete cDNA sequence showed the presence of the DDK domain, which is the hallmark of the response regulator family.

Background: There is little information on the efficacy and side effects of antidepressant treatment in elderly patients with combined depression and cognitive impairment without dementia (DEP-MCI), and it is unclear if cognitive performance improves with antidepressant response in these patients.

Methods: In 39 elderly DEP-MCI patients, changes in depression and cognitive impairment were evaluated with open sertraline treatment up to 200 mg/day for 12 weeks.

Results: Of the 26 completers, 17 were responders and nine were non-responders.

Three DNA polymerase activities, named 1, 2 and 3 were purified from maize embryo axes and were compared in terms of ion requirements, optimal pH, temperature and KCl for activity, response to specific inhibitors and use of templates. All three enzymes require a divalent cation for activity, but main differences were observed in sensitivity to inhibitors and template usage: while DNA polymerases 1 and 2 were inhibited by N-ethyl maleimide and aphidicolin, inhibitors of replicative-type enzymes, DNA polymerase 3 was only marginally or not affected at all. In contrast, DNA polymerase 3 was highly inhibited by very low concentrations of ddTTP, an inhibitor of repair-type enzymes, and a 100-fold higher concentration of the drug was needed to inhibit DNA polymerases 1 and 2.
