Within a cell, protein-bound methionines can be chemically or enzymatically oxidized, and subsequently reduced by methionine sulfoxide reductases (Msrs). Methionine oxidation can result in structural damage or be the basis of functional regulation of enzymes. In addition to participating in redox reactions, methionines play an important role as the initiator residue of translated proteins where they are commonly modified at their α-amine group by formylation or acetylation.

Tracking cell death in vivo can enable a better understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying tissue homeostasis and disease. Unfortunately, existing cell death labeling methods lack compatibility with in vivo applications or suffer from low sensitivity, poor tissue penetration, and limited temporal resolution. Here, we fluorescently labeled dead cells in vivo with Trypan Blue (TBlue) to detect single scattered dead cells or to generate whole-mount three-dimensional maps of large areas of necrotic tissue during organ regeneration.

The Healthy Oregon Project (HOP) is a statewide effort that aims to build a large research repository and influence the health of Oregonians through providing no-cost genetic screening to participants for a next-generation sequencing 32-gene panel comprising genes related to inherited cancers and familial hypercholesterolemia. This type of unbiased population screening can detect at-risk individuals who may otherwise be missed by conventional medical approaches. However, challenges exist for this type of high-throughput testing in an academic setting, including developing a low-cost high-efficiency test and scaling up the clinical laboratory for processing large numbers of samples.

Crystallization of nicotine, an oil prone to degradation at room temperature, has been demonstrated to be an effective means of creating nicotine-based materials with tunable thermal properties and improved resistance to photo-induced degradation. Herein, we show that both isomers of enantiomerically pure tartaric acid are highly effective salt formers when combined with nicotine. Both salts exhibit enhanced photostability, and with a melting point of 143.
