Background And Objectives: In 2016, France allowed men who have sex with men (MSM) to donate blood if they had not had sex with men in the previous 12 months. In April 2020, this restriction was relaxed to 4 months due to the lack of negative impact observed on blood safety. This study assesses the impact of reducing this deferral period on epidemiological surveillance indicators.

Article Synopsis
  • Syphilis cases among blood donors in France have been rising, with a significant uptick observed in 2022 compared to earlier years.
  • Data from over 45 million donations (2007-2022) revealed that the infection rate was notably higher in males, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM), whose risk factor percentage increased over time.
  • A non-treponemic test (NTT) was used to assess infection recency, but the data were insufficient to reliably differentiate between recent and past infections among the syphilis-positive donors.

In France, blood donations are tested in pools of 96 samples for parvovirus B19 (B19V) DNA to discard plasma for fractionation when it contains high viral loads. Between January 2015 and March 2024, B19V-positive donations decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by a strong rebound in 2023 and unusually high circulation during winter 2023/24 (ca 10 times higher December 2023-March 2024 vs the pre-pandemic period). Variations over time are probably related to measures implemented to limit SARS-CoV-2 spread.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) performed in the second trimester of pregnancy, the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and perinatal outcomes in pregnant women with a history of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and to examine the effect of COVID-19 infection history on OGTT results and GDM prevalence.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 463 patients who visited the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of Kayseri City Hospital between March 2020 and January 2023 and were administered a 75-g OGTT in the second trimester of their pregnancy. Accordingly, we traced COVID-19 history, OGTT results, GDM prevalence, and newborn outcomes among the patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers created a new molecular method using Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) to determine the sex of marine bivalves that exhibit doubly uniparental inheritance (DUI) of mitochondria, where both males and females transmit their mitochondria but with distinct types.
  • They tested this method on 154 bivalve samples from the Atlantic coast of France, confirming that LAMP results matched those from traditional methods like PCR and microscopic examination of gonads.
  • The study suggests that using LAMP can enhance eco-evolutionary research on DUI by exploring genetic factors like sexual selection and dispersal patterns in marine species.

A novel ultra-high-entropy rare earth orthoferrite (UHE REO) of ScYLaCePrNdSmEuGdTbDyHoErTmYbLuFeO nominal composition was successfully synthesized for the first time through a simple and efficient solution combustion approach. PXRD, Raman, and Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy confirmed the high chemical and phase purity of the synthesized UHE REO (hereafter denoted as ΣREFeO), which belonged to the space group, typical of the perovskite-like rare earth orthoferrites. Despite the fact that the main X-ray reflections, vibration modes, and spectral Mössbauer components unambiguously indicate the single-phase nature of the sample, the results of SEM and TEM make it possible to establish the presence of a main (about 50 nm) and a minor ultrafine (about 10 nm) fraction of ΣREFeO nanoparticles.

The aim of this paper is to present a novel method for simultaneous spike waveforms extraction and sorting from the raw recorded signal. The objective is twofold: on the one hand, to enhance spike sorting performance by extracting the spike waveforms of each spike and, on the other hand, to improve the analysis of the multi-scale relationships between spikes and local field potentials (LFP) by offering an accurate separation of these two components constitutive of the raw micro recordings. The method, based on a Bayesian approach, is fully automated and provides a mean spike shape for each cluster, but also an estimate for each singular spike waveform, as well as the LFP signal cleaned of spiking activity.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the most common viral infection found in blood donors in France, with a significant majority (98%) of HBV-positive cases from first-time donors between 2000 and 2020.
  • Over two decades, there was a notable decrease in both HBV prevalence (2.8-fold) and the risk of transfusion-transmitted HBV infections (13-fold), primarily attributed to the screening processes and the origins of donors.
  • The main risk factor for HBV infection was donors from endemic countries (66.5%), with genotype D being the most prevalent among positive cases, while a robust screening strategy ensures high levels of blood safety.

The immune response is a key player in the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and is often seriously dysfunctional in severe Coronavirus Disease 2019. The hyperinflammatory status has been described to be accompanied by the appearance of autoantibodies. In a lethal COVID-19 infection, we observed the emergence of a de novo natural alloantibody which targeted the M antigen from the MNS blood group on red blood cells (RBC) without evidence of any cross-reaction with SARS-CoV-2 antigens.
