Methodology of environmental diagnosis for construction and demolition waste landfills: a tool for planning and making decisions.

Current legislation in the European Union regarding landfills provides measures, procedures and guidance to prevent or reduce, insofar as possible, negative effects on the environment. This means that Member States must take measures so that landfills cannot operate unless the operator first presents a plan for the site, which includes the implementation of improvements considered necessary by the engineer for compliance with regulations. Researchers at the University of Granada have developed a method to ascertain the degree of environmental impact that a construction and demolition waste landfill may produce on its immediate surroundings.

Finite-size effects in the dynamics and thermodynamics of two-dimensional Coulomb clusters.

The dynamics and thermodynamics of melting in two-dimensional Coulomb clusters is revisited using molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations. Several parameters are considered, including the Lindemann index, the largest Lyapunov exponent, and the diffusion constant. In addition to the orientational and radial melting processes, isomerizations and complex size effects are seen to occur in a very similar way to atomic and molecular clusters.

Risk-adapted androgen deprivation and escalated three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy for prostate cancer: Does radiation dose influence outcome of patients treated with adjuvant androgen deprivation? A GICOR study.

Purpose: Multicenter study conducted to determine the impact on biochemical control and survival of risk-adapted androgen deprivation (AD) combined with high-dose three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) for prostate cancer. Results of biochemical control are reported.

Patients And Methods: Between October 1999 and October 2001, 416 eligible patients with prostate cancer were assigned to one of three treatment groups according to their risk factors: 181 low-risk patients were treated with 3DCRT alone; 75 intermediate-risk patients were allocated to receive neoadjuvant AD (NAD) 4-6 months before and during 3DCRT; and 160 high-risk patients received NAD and adjuvant AD (AAD) 2 years after 3DCRT.

Purpose: This study assessed the cytotoxic effects of irofulven in combination with oxaliplatin and cisplatin in a panel of human cancer cell lines.

Methods: Growth inhibition studies were performed using the human HT29 colon cancer cell line, irofulven-resistant derivative HT29/IF2, breast cancer cell line MCF7, and ovarian cancer line CAOV3. Irofulven-oxaliplatin combinations were compared with irofulven-cisplatin combinations in the same cell lines using similar experimental settings.

Platelet-derived growth factor-B (PDGF-B) is important for normal tissue growth and maintenance and its overexpression has been linked to several diseases, including cancer, fibrotic disease and atherosclerosis. Here, we show that synthesized as a precursor, proPDGF-B is converted to a mature form by proteolytic cleavage at two sites and its N-terminal cleavage is a prerequisite for processing at its C-terminus. The first cleavage occurs at residues RGRR81/, and the second cleavage close to residues ARPVT190, just before the C-terminal amino-acid sequence crucial for PDGF-B retention to cell surface.

Altered behavioural response to acute stress in mice lacking cellular prion protein.

Although many studies have investigated the function of cellular prion protein (PrPc), its physiologic role remains elusive. PrPc null mice have been reported to develop normally and to show normal performance in most behavioural tests. In the present study we investigated whether this also holds true after episodes of acute stress.

Environmental diagnosis methodology for municipal waste landfills.

A large number of countries are involved in a process of transformation with regard to the management of municipal solid waste. This process is a consequence of environmental requirements that occasionally materialise in legislation, such as the European Council Directive 31/99/EC on waste release in the European Union. In some cases, the remediation of old landfills can be carried out in compliance with environmental requirements; in other cases, it is necessary to proceed with the closure of the landfill and to assimilate it into its own environment.

Preoperative chemoradiation with oral tegafur within a multidisciplinary therapeutic approach in patients with T3-4 rectal cancer.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the activity in terms of downstaging histologic patterns of residual tumor and clinical tolerance of a neoadjuvant chemoradiation program with oral tegafur for rectal cancer.

Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) was originally identified on the tumor cell surface as an inducer of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) production in neighboring fibroblasts. Here we demonstrate a role for EMMPRIN in MMP induction during corneal wound healing. MMP and EMMPRIN expression was analyzed in normal and ulcerated human corneas, as well as in corneal epithelial and stromal cells in culture using confocal microscopy, zymography, immunoblots, and real-time polymerase chain reaction.

Background: Recurrent hepatitis C is very common leading to graft cirrhosis in a significant proportion of patients. Preliminary reports of combination therapy with interferon-ribavirin have been promising but generally applied to selected patients with chronic mild disease. Little is known, however, about the efficacy and risk of adverse effects when it is used in general clinical practice.

[Factors influencing the decision to administer systemic corticosteroids in Crohn's disease].

Introduction: Crohn's disease shows periods of exacerbation and remission. Corticosteroids are the most frequently used drugs in exacerbations of disease activity. The objective of this study is to determine which clinical and laboratory parameters are associated with the therapeutic decision to administer corticosteroids during the course of the disease.

To assess the clinical significance of VEGF-A in AITL, VEGF-A gene expression was studied in the tumoral lymph nodes of 24 patients using laser microdissection and quantitative polymerase chain reaction.

Neoadjuvant chemoradiation with tegafur in cancer of the pancreas: initial analysis of clinical tolerance and outcome.

The early institutional experience in the neoadjuvant treatment of potentially resectable pancreatic carcinoma using oral Tegafur as radioenhancing agent is analyzed. Fifteen patients (10 male and 5 female, mean age of 61 years) were treated over a 30-month period. Tegafur dose was 1,200 mg/d along the external radiotherapy period (45-55 consecutive days).

[Carbapenemase detection in Acinetobacter baumannii clones resistant to imipenem].

Introduction: The aim of this study was to detect carbapenemases in imipenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates obtained in the microbiology department of a Basque Country Public Health Service hospital over a period of 19 months, and to genetically characterize the resistant clones.

Methods: Susceptibility tests to imipenem, meropenem, ticarcillin, ceftazidime, cefotaxime, cefepime and aztreonam were done by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration on agar plates. A tRNA technique was used for species identification and PCR with primers ERIC2, AP3 and M13 for genetic typing of resistant isolates.

Survival results of a multicentre phase II study to evaluate D2 gastrectomy for gastric cancer.

Curative resection is the treatment of choice for potentially curable gastric cancer. Two major Western studies in the 1990s failed to show a benefit from D2 dissection. They showed extremely high postoperative mortality after D2 dissection, and were criticised for the potential inadequacy of the pretrial training in the new technique of D2 dissection, prior to the phase III studies being initiated.
